...I'm interested. Although I thought Disney would have first dibs on a Sonic movie what with Wreck-It Ralph having Sonic all over that friggin' movie.
Would totally go for a CG movie done by the team that made Night of the Werehog & the CG clips in the recent games.
I can only imagine how this is gonna go down. "Okay Frank, let's make us a Sonic movie." "You mean like the hedgehog, Brad?" "I think so. It'd be pretty weird if we made a movie about a fast-food drive-in." "Sure, sure. So what do we know about Sonic? The hedgehog, not the restaurant?" "He runs fast. I mean, there's the final stretch of the movie right there, he's in some race." "Like Fast and the Furious?" "Nono, he runs fast, but I'm pretty sure I've seen him in a car. Actually yeah, let's do that, he's racing cars in the mean streets of... I dunno, Detroit?" "I'm down as long as Vin Diesel's in it somewhere." "He can be Sonic's red friend, with the Bob Marley hair." "Alright, alright. Is that all that's going on? Any romance or anything?" "There's a pink one that I'm pretty sure Sonic's sweet on. She can be his scantily clad hood ornament." "I think we've got something here." "Yeah, let's get the boys down the hall to write up a first draft and see where it takes us."
I think a movie about a fast food drive in would be ground breaking/a ton more creative than Super Hero movie #630
You know who works at Sony Pictures? Genndy Tartakovsky. That's right. There's a chance this won't be all horrible.
Some "Sonic the Hedgehog Movie" related domains were registered recently. Taking a look at the WHOIS info, they were registered by “SPD Domain Names Inc.”, which is Sony Pictures' official registrar. The registrant email is also [email protected] ???????????????????????????????????????!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Very interesting. Although not sure how big a Sonic movie would be a this point. I think we're long past the golden era where a genuine big-screen film would've been a massive money maker for Sega (I mean, they had their chance when Super Mario Bros and Street Fighter were doing their run of cheesy films). Unless it's a smaller straight to DVD/BD thing, like Resident Evil Degeneration/Damnation Could we be looking at a 'Sonic Boom' tie-in project? Or maybe my dreams of a sequel to the OVA movie are finally coming true?
Maybe Eddie Lebron's short film caught interest from Sony? :v: *shot* In all seriousness, I wonder if they're gonna start from a certain era (Classic, Adventure, ect), or make it a stand-alone thing? A Sonic Boom tie in could be likely, but I doubt it.
You think there's a chance Sony will put Tartakovsky on the project? You're right, there's a chance. But the chance is slimmer than the hairs on my balls.
If Sony is making the movie, you can probably expect that the animation will be done by one of their own animation studios. As for Genndy Tartakovsky, apparently he's already busy with making a Popeye movie.
Eh, even if it's registered I can't see anything coming from it (at least now). Adaptations are often stuck in Development Hell or put on hold for years. I know of more than a dozen films like that. I'm interested as long as it's close to the games.. Which 10/1 it will not be.
This is probably going to be absolutely terrible! Did any of you see either Smurfs film? (Assuming anything actually comes from this and it's not just domain grabbing, of course.)
I'm very scared. As much as I would like to see Sega's internal Animation studio actually work some something substantial after Night of the Werehog, Sony Pictures aren't them. Our only hope is Grenndy.
Do note that it's entirely possible that Marza Animation Planet (aka Sega's CGI team) are the people making this, not Sony Pictures Animation, and Sony Pictures is just in charge of distribution. Sony Pictures Animation is capable of making decent movies without Genndy (who is too busy working on his Popeye movie for 2015 to work on this anyway); see Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.
So wait. A Sonic movie and CG TV show? I know Sonic and many other IP's have had multiple cross-medium projects running simultaneously, but assuming they're going to be two separate entities, seems kind of weird. In the 90's they pulled it off, but I'm wondering what kind of marketing issues they'll have in an era saturated by the internet. Unless Sonic Boom has been cancelled? Or won't be out yet before they make this one? Tentatively excited, but it's still very odd.
I'll just echo what Dabble said at the end of his/her post and say that it will be interesting if it stays true to the games. I can't imagine anything too bad coming out of this so long as it is at least a bit more faithful to the games than the OVA, which was probably the most faithful out of any of the shows (though it could have obviously been much closer). There aren't many adaptions I can think of that have turned out bad despite staying true to their source material. Then again, feel free to point a couple out, because I'm sure there must be a few I'm overlooking.
