I'm glad they went for Flying Battery personally, Ice Cap has become massively overrated over the years imo. Though I guess they're still on the table... pls marble garden
So CD is getting shafted again, like with Generations. I guess I missed the memo on this, but why inflate S3&K into two slots instead of pulling from a different classic game? Come on.

Who says there's only going to be 4 classic zones? If anyone's going to want to represent CD it's Taxman.

That's a good point. I could've sworn I heard somewhere that there would be 4 old zones and 4 new zones.

And there's the fact that Mirage Saloon is basically Desert Dazzle but you know

I'm pretty sure that they actually said there'd be more stages than Generations, which would mean at least 10 zones (enough room for 5 new and 5 old, leaving a space for CD).

Watch, they'll take a level from the Game Gear games instead. :specialed:

In all seriousness, if that's true I'm really happy. I feel like CD doesn't get very much love sometimes, because weird people have problems with its level design; between the music, art, and mechanics, it's one of my favs.

The only thing I'd care for from CD is Quartz Quadrant.

I could totally get behind a Jungle Zone, but maybe that's more of a DLC thing in future. :v:

-"Green Hill is going to be the most tame of the returning zones"
    - show the footage of Flying Battery which is about as tame as Green Hill was

    Oh well

Anyway I really like the idea of robot "koopalings" for Sonic Mania. I've never thought of something like that but that's brilliant.

  9. I've been keeping a close eye on this game and keeping track of exactly what we know about it.

At least one zone from each of Sonic 1 (16-bit), Sonic 2 (16-bit), Sonic CD, Sonic 3, and Sonic & Knuckles has been confirmed - explicitly, specifically and repeatedly - by statements from Aaron, Christian and Lola (the producer). It's safe to say that no other games will have a representative level, since that hasn't been so much as hinted at.

Edit: In case anyone wanted a source for the CD level, skip to 9:15 in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al0GFfRfq9w
It was definitely confirmed before this, but I can't remember where off the top of my head.

Nothing has been said about the number of zones beyond the vaguely worded "the game will be longer than Generations" and "there will be more classic zones than new zones". Taking these statements at face value, at least one of the above games must have two remixed zones. I think the most optimistic scenario would be something like 8+6 zones or 10+5 zones. Most pessimistic would be 6+4, I suppose.

Yep, it's a shame because the first thing I thought of when he talked about the zones "changing over time" was an abandoned, overgrown Flying Battery that had crashed somewhere. Still, I'm sure they know what they're doing, and there'll be some fantastic surprises lying in wait for us. There's nothing wrong with a "new and improved" Flying Battery, it does look and sound pretty damn fantastic.

    Jack shit.
I thought it was said that there would be five old zones and four new ones.

  11. If someone can provide a source for that, then I'll stand corrected. As far as I'm aware, though, it's mere speculation on the part of fans.

Oh, I didn't know CD was a confirmed thing.

I really want Stardust Speedway but in the same way as (I imagine) Lava Reef wasn't chosen, I think SS won't be it due to the Metal Sonic reminders when Mania is steering clear of revisiting story elements.

So, I'm hoping it's Collision Chaos in that case. It could fit too.

Like many, I'm thinking it's MCZ for Sonic 2 and HZ for Sonic 3, and that's a perfect mix imo. SS would be great on top of that, but CC would be nice too.

Also I'm pretty sure that amount of new zones equals the amount of hardboiled heavies (the miniboss robots) shown in the teaser picture.

    Edit:

Correct me if I'm wrong but I see 5 robots so 5 original zones confirmed?

Edit 2: found a better image.
Also this guy is apparently one of them (presumably the third from the left).
He also appears to wear a cape.

I want this more than you can imagine. Like, I'm contemplating getting a Switch just so I can play this, and I really cannot afford a new console right now. Again, Taxman, Stealth, and the Sonic Mania team: Thank you! I am glad it's been delayed, as I know you'll make good use of the extra time.

Also, again, I hate to be that guy, but 2 things that irked me a little:

The tiles used to transition between the indoors/outdoors are also using the wrong colour/palette. It looks fine everywhere else, except here, which is odd. The brown looks out of place to me.

Also, I'm only going to point these out once, but this is not how you place chunks in Flying Battery Zone (issues in red):

I'm hoping this is footage from an early version, because if it's not and you're keeping it like that, at least use the square chunks with the metal floor grating on them as floor. This is a wall chunk that's being used as a multi-purpose one, after all. There are chunks in the original which would fit in this area a lot better. I want to make it clear that I am not moaning like before, though. I know these 'issues' are probably already known, but due to my previous experience with Flying Battery Zone and layouting, these stuck out to me pretty quickly. I just wanted to bring them to your attention as it's the only thing that I was questioning from the entire video.

...and now I have the urge to play through Flying Battery Zone. Good job, guys.

  15. I did a couple of MS Paint scribbles on the Hard Boiled Heavy image - one for how it could be four robots, and the other for how it could be six. I'm sure someone could do a much better job though.

Five seems to be the most likely.number, and there's no way it could be less than four or more than six.

    My predictions:
Red: Ninja bot (shuriken is a giveaway)
Orange: Top-hat wearing hovering bot (some sort of magician)
Yellow: Mirage Saloon bot (see the form of his head) also wears a cape.
Green: Studiopolis bot (forgot his name) - confirmed
    Purple: Knobstick-wielding bot.

Love Flying Battery as the Sonic & Knuckles level choice - was hoping for either that or Sandopolis. Will be interesting to see what they pick for the other returning levels.

Hoping the assumption that the Hard-Boiled Heavies are minibosses for new stages only turns out to be true, as from looking at those silhouettes I'm convinced that'd mean five brand-new stages to look forward to! Especially with the date being pushed back to Summer, though, I also hope they don't show off any more of the new stages for the time being as we've previewed two of them already; hoping they'll save the surprise on at least some of them until the game is released.

Interestingly, if the guess of five new stages does turn out to be true, going off of previous statements about there being more returning stages than new ones it'd be logical to expect at least six returning stages (if not more - aside from knowing at least one stage from Sonic 1/2/CD/3/&K is being included I don't think we've heard anything else concrete on that front thus far). If this is the case, which game(s) do people expect will have multiple returning stages and why?

    My predictions for that are:
    2 zones for Sonic 1
    2 zones for Sonic 2
    1 zone for Sonic 3
1 zone for Sonic and Knuckles
And maybe 1 zone for Sonic CD.
The reason I'm not sure about CD is because I can't imagine how they would include the time travel mechanic for a single zone and also make it organic.

Most likely remaining zones in my opinion would be:
Labyrinth or Scrap brain for Sonic 1. Because Marble (bat badnik used in Green Hill), Spring Yard (ball badnik used in Mirage Saloon), Starlight (too similar to Studiopolis) are off the table.
Aquatic Ruin (if Marble Garden, Labyrinth and Hydrocty are not in the game), Mystic Cave and Metropolis are most likely candidates for Sonic 2 (because fuck Sonic 4) in my opinion. Although I really love Oil Ocean too so I hope it is one of the returning zones (again fuck Sonic 4).
Marble Garden (if Aquatic Ruin and Labyrint are not in the game), Hydrocity (also if Aquatic Ruin is not in the game), Casino Night, Launch Base or Ice Cap for Sonic 3. Though if we take the music thing into consideration that would sort out CN, LB and IC leaving us with MG and HC. IMO Hydrocity is the the most likely candidate.
And for Sonic CD it would be Stardust Speedway cause that's the most well known and beloved zone of the game.

I'm pretty sure it's just a revolver-looking gun with a huge barrel and drum.
    But yeah it does :)

  20. I myself am bugged about everything being the same because Flying Battery, as a S&K stage, was artistically designed around a psuedo-2.5D look, not the more cartoony style most of Mania up to this point has been to this point. There is a big issue of art style clash to address here.

That said, I guess it would be difficult to tweak it without making it look too much like it's Sonic 2 equivalent, Wing Fortress.
