About the only reason I could see for 3rd party games being in SOA's archive is because don't you think SEGA would take a look at a game before they deside it's something they want on their console? A company isn't going to completely finish a game and hope SEGA will let them sell it on their console. Then also like DRX said they were very picky about making sure the SEGA logos and trademarks were correct. So builds may have been sent occasionally for that reason.
Man, I am excited about the Dynamite Headdy protos. Since we have another one, I'd love to see any differences and if that "Binary Head" (lol djbrayster) exists. Like the Sonic protos, it'll give us a possible insight as to how the development process went for Dynamite Headdy as well.
Makes perfect sense now. Now I feel a bit dumb for not considering that. I really hope Pulseman comes up in this as well. Though that was never released stateside so it's probably unlikely. As far as Sonic 2 goes, the only thing interesting I can think of that could be new is finding out when Genocide City was taken out of the game, or even when it was first put in. It would be weird if they just put a level slot with the name but never actually put anything into. On that note, I hope the S2 protos don't go too ahead of what we already have, or there probably won't be too much on new interest contained in them.
Genocide City was never more of what can be seen in the Wai's beta. One of those zones which died in the concept for some or other reason.
I don't quite believe that. You don't make a level slot for something and don't put anything in it—there had to be SOMETHING in there at some point. I'm not sure what, however. The other possibility is that it was made so that it COULD be worked on, but then it simply was never touched. It's not all that farfetched, considering that Hidden Palace was worked on once very early on, and then never touched again.
Like someone else mentioned, I'm interested in seeing the boses in later prerelease versions of Sonic 2. Remember, the only boss we've got in either of our current S2 betas is the Emerald Hill Zone boss. I'm interested in seeing if those unused tiles from the CPZ boss are used in any form in any of these betas, and who knows what beta versions of Death Egg might have been like for example.
Something quite random, but, just remembered about s2rev00.. If I recall correctly there was some bg code from removed zones there; if this is the case chances are there will be actually some interesting stuff in the later builds than the Wai's one...
What do you mean "I guess"? That should be "especially for dumping the ROMs", because many prototype collectors grab prototypes because they're rare, and then sell them on for huge amounts of money or hoard it away in their collections. (though in this case, these are not ROM dumps. BIG PENIS. However, DRX has dumped prototype ROMs in the past. Therefore, this is worth saying.) One again, I'll say thanks to DRX for finding, and especially dumping prototypes, so we can all enjoy them. You're looking sharp... you're looking good. You've come so far. And you know how to make... the most of what the sonic community is. It's what you've always done. Sonic prototype - the best prototype a man can get. With so many prototypes, it's plain to see. http://youtube.com/watch?v=LgdnJM13bE8
It's worth mentioning again—there was no dumping involved in these prototypes. These are the original files, used to burn images to carts. That's likely why they're in such massive amounts; after all, why would Sega have to dump carts of their prototypes? :P
Yeah I especially want to see what 8x8 art Death Egg was tagged with as the tagging code for it still exists in the final but the art was removed =\.
The files on the CDs are eprom shards, as in, the binary for each individual chip in the cartridge. Also as for why third party games are in the collection, I believe drx stated that these were SOA's testing archives, as in, these are all the games handed to testers, so presumably some companies outsourced their testing to SEGA. This does also mean it's unlikely there will be any early unplayable prototypes, so don't expect anything too weird.
I did find a 3MB alpha of Batman Sega CD here. Correct. That applies for most of the stuff. I also have some protos that I got earlier that I'm releasing. Oh, I forgot. Thanks to Gerbil for his help in finding me an old program. In return:

It's the Chaotix world—Newtrogic High Zone! The same render was in the manual for the game. You can see Marina Madness in the water, with Botanic Base being the large, glass-enclosed area.

Bleh, these Chaotix screens mean nothing to the awesomeness of some Sonic 3 screens. Post those :P Nah, it all looks good.
