(off-topic) Not an oxymoron. A prototype can be new. Prototype means "not finished", so it's OK. EDIT: thanks to you I just noticed a typo in my nick XD ("hedgehog" should be all lowercase). (return on-topic please)
Hey uh, I'm skeptic of my own idea, but did anyone notice that he didn't specifically say there weren't any sonic 1 prototypes? Then again, I think he would have told us; he probably already did say there aren't any and I'm just blind.
Perhaps a Sonic 1 proto had some connection to that password-finding program. Up until that point, he wouldn't have been able to get the files working.
Aside from wanting to find out the differences between the builds we have now and the builds drx found; here's what I also want to find out if it's there in these prototypes: Sonic 2 - Are the title cards there, and are the Special Stages playable. How much more was developed in the builds drx showed us; most especially in CNZ, OOZ, MZ, SCZ, SFZ, DEZ and 2 Player Vs mode. I'm curious if WD was completely taken out from these builds; if not, are there any differences. As for HPZ, I'm also curious if the spinning action was finally implemented in the tubes. Sonic 3 - I would like to see most especially if there's anything different in HZ, CNZ, ICZ. What Sonic & knuckles levels were included in the builds drx found. Any other surprises from any of the prototypes including whatever drx has altogether is a bonus :3
This thread amuses me. It looks sort of like a nerd circlejerk. Seriously though, I'm thrilled to see the scene revitalized like this!
Damn. This is pretty massive. I thought I'd never come back to this place, but 100+ protos being released on one day is something I can't pass up. Hello World!
Thanks; just making sure so I don't dissapoint myself after getting excited. I'm more excited about either the Sonic Crackers transition or the Sonic 3 prototypes.
Let me see, it took me 45 days to do the S2 rom breakdown, and another 30 days to do the first clean S2 disassembly. That's 75 days for one game. If you've got 200 protos at a conservative estimate, that's 42 years worth of disassemblies. Awesome. This is absolutely massive drx, and you deserve all the credit. I foresee another goodgen release in the near future.
Alright, I got curious about something and asked drx in the IRC chat about it. Included in the bundle of Prototypes, apparently drx has several different beta builds of Dynamite Headdy. Rather not say the number, since it may or may not been correct. This is certainly turning out to be something interesting.
Since people are posting what they are expecting to find... I'd like to see if the surfing animation at the beginning of Sonic 3 is in/working or not. I think we're going to find more interesting stuff in Sonic 3 / Sonic & Knuckles rather than Sonic 2, since we already have two betas of that, there is a lower chance to find something new. The only "big" discovery in Sonic 2 I can think of is a beta Super Sonic of some sort, or some kind of flying Tails.
I can do disassemblies in less -- I've done my Sonic 2 Nick Arcade in a few days. But yeah, you're right, it's still an incredibly big cookie to chew on :P
Hopefully these releases will get rid of all those trained and hacked prototypes already available. I'm also quite curious about the Dynamite Headdy ones... And everything else, really. Once these are out, everybody will start huntin' for scrapped stuff in every single ROM they can, which would be awesome. Just wondering, is there anything on B-Bomb, Jester, Astropede, etc?
Personally, I'd say the possibility of a prototype containing the later, more-complete-but-still-pink Casino Night Zone is pretty interesting, IMO. =P Considering, from the magazine pics, it looked to have a more polished (and more complete) background and foreground than the version we have, I think it could be incredibly interesting. I mean, just how far did the Zone get before they completely scrapped and redrew the graphics set? I'm also curious as to whether Wood Zone was ever in even a slightly more complete state than the incarnation we know of before falling to the axe, as it were - and, indeed, how long into the development process it survived before being removed completely. The screens in the Solid Gold Guide seem to suggest that it survived long enough for Sonic's final sprite set to come into play; if the screen of Wood Zone is from the same build as the rest of the shots it also suggests that the level survived in some form even after being removed from the level select.
I had found a Garfield prototype a few years ago, somewhere. I can't buy it though, don't have much funds right now :P
I thought I saw somewhere that the guy who did the Casino Night Zone graphics redid them a few times, so who knows. Not that I wanna get our hopes up too much, just in case. I also saw somewhere that Wood Zone in the Wai Beta was "not half finished, but half deleted" I don't know if that's true or not. But yea, I remember that magazine scan showing the level select without Wood Zone but then showing a shot of it. But remember that the magazine pics of the NA proto showed other zones (at least Metropolis) that weren't in it.
