I don't think this counts but one of the Disney XD idents from 2009 made an interesting choice: I'd like to think those colours aren't a coincidence. I mean they probably are, but I'd like to think they aren't.
So there's this bonkers looking anime film pilot called KILLTUBE I just saw on Catsuka, which in some ways feels very Jet Set Radio, but that's not specifically why I'm sharing it here. This guy and his hat is.
On ITV's coverage of the EUROS 2024 Belgium v Romania game, McCoist said something about the Romanian right-back (Ratiu?) being like Sonic because of his pace and blue hair. Clive Tyldesley said something like Belgium about to bring on Dr Eggman. It was at roughly the 50 minute mark.
I was reading the Dragon Ball Super manga and thought this looked pretty familiar… Coincidence? I can’t tell if it’s meant to resemble the Dreamcast or if both are based off something else. https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Dr._Gero's_Confidential_Disc
I can see the Dreamcast resemblance, but I think it looks more like a CD in a caddy to me, which is a thing that hardly anyone remembers. When I was in primary school, the apple macintosh in the library would only accept CDs inside caddys. The PSP UMD disc is probably the most commonly remembered type of CD in a caddy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caddy_(hardware)
Thank you. That looks exactly like it and is definitely the base. I had a feeling it was meant to look like something else and I’m a bit too young to know about those lol.
Apparently "indietronica" is a genre, and short-lived Scottish band Driveby Argument released a single called "The Sega Method" in 2007. The song has nothing to do with Sega, but hey, a pseudo-Mega Drive cartridge on a 7-inch record.
"Castles" by Skepta One of the lyrics is "It's real life, no computer game, we're living in the streets of rage"
What a coincidence, it's a big Dreamcast day today. Sega sponsored a UK five-a-side football tournament in 1999/2000 called the "Dreamcast Millennium Cup". There's not a lot online about it, which is a little crazy given it featured 10,000 teams. The last 16 games were televised on Sky Sports, with added celebrities: Look it's future disgraced TV personality Angus Deayton Plenty of watermarked stock images showing "people", not so much the event itself. There's a also few TV listings and short newspaper clippings hidden behind paywalls. It started in June 1999 and went through to at least April 2000.
I remember EDGE online covered it a little ( I think it was that site ) and took the piss out of the events . Saying noone was interested and making fun of how SEGA was spending money on this with no top football game to call it's own and SEGA Europe having no money left to makert DC games on TV for Christmas 2000. I seen to remember MSR only had a TV adv thanks to Bizarre Creations playing for it themselfs .... SEGA were beyond useless in the DC days
Hourly Sailor Moon on X: "https://t.co/mPG1VRhWsH" / X Earthworm Jim in Sailor Moon. Anyone know what episode this is? Looks like SuperS.
I'm really pushing the boundaries here - "Atlus" not "Sega", "sponsorship" not "reference". What am I like https://www.eurogamer.net/bizarrely...e-grand-prix-in-honour-of-metaphor-refantazio https://www.haasf1team.com/news/mon...announce-new-partnership-singapore-grand-prix Metaphor: ReFantazio is set to sponsor the Haas team at the Singapore grand prix this Sunday. The car may even be on the track practising as I type this. Apparently the game has a character called Hulkenberg.
Independent vtuber Grimmi has a surprising reference to a certain 32-bit Sega console in her recent lore video. I wasn't expecting this kind of reference to be made in this day and age.
I'M GOING TO SHOUT REALLY LOUDLY THE NICKELODEON KIDS CHOICE AWARDS 2003 HAS A REFERENCE TO ZAXXON IN ITS INTRODUCTION AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH
So here's a notable reference we've missed so far. 1992's Encino Man is a "caveman comedy" starring Brendan Fraser as said caveman. Skipping through, it doesn't look great, but it's got a surprisingly recognizable cast, so who knows. One of the film's minor plots is specifically Rad Mobile. When Fraser's character sees it, the machine begins chanting RAD MOBILE RAD MOBILE (a sound effect added for the film, as far as I'm aware), and multiple characters specifically mention it by name. This 100% has to be official product placement. What's more curious is the above. The closeup gameplay shots have this Sensor (Base_Left) text I haven't seen before. Encino Man's filming began around late '91, which was fairly close to when the US version of Rad Mobile was coming out (we don't have an exact date). Was Hollywood Pictures provided with some kind of early version in time for filming, or was this the result of something more benign - like maybe they put a heavy camera on a physical safety sensor or something? Either way I wanna get this added to the wiki.
https://fixupx.com/KoriMaru/status/1849631585236078774 The new Yakuza show has Virtua Cop and Viruta Fighter 2.
https://picclick.com/Bayonetta-Sega-Garbage-Pail-Kids-GPK-Nintendo-Video-135353024855.html Apparently Garbage Pail Kids is still a viable business in 2024. There was a Sonic one in 2019. pop culture is weird
