We all know the place that Sonic once called home was inhabited not only by Sonic and his pals/the other woodland creatures, but of course the villain Dr Robotnik. Was it ever established whether a large population of humans other than Robotnik existed in Sonic's world? I know there's definitely human figures in the background of Sandopolis Zone Act 2. :v: Discuss!

I would say say so, but I don't they ever touched one it. I don't think a single episode of AOST ans SATF shown another human besides snively and Robotnik's mother.

The ghosts in sandopolis are animal ghosts. They were abandoned in the prison capsule for a long time and died there. And then sonic released the ghosts, but they're haunting him and sandopolis.
"You didn't come to save us. Now die!"

Though, I don't know about other humans in mobius. I think eggman was originally born on earth, and found mobius while doing research and now hes stuck there. Also the timeline is different (according to sonic X) so he didn't age a lot while the normal universe's time kept going, that's why nobody knows who he is.

I don't think that they ever did in a game dating before 1998-9 (Sonic Adventure), but with that picture they wanted to give it that egyptian 'feel' and something that people would recognise as part of a pyramid (I'm talking about the hyroglyphics) but it's no indication or conclusive evidence that humans did live during the genesis times... I think they wanted to focus more on the hedgehog and the environments (Flickies, Trees, Water and what have you), but maybe the books indicate otherwise.

Actually, disregard that. In the Sonic 2 jpn manual wiki'd, it indicates that in the past (many years ago) people on West-Side Island lived there and based the development of their civilization on some strange gems (presumably the chaos emeralds), so it could be asumed that people lived there in the past, in the present however hasn't got evidence to support/conclude it, but then again this is a video game.

Now I will sit on a corner and take a breath... :specialed:

I figured they just added human NPCs in 'Adventure so that you could tell who main characters were in a crowd.

As for S1-S&K, Robotnik's whole evil scheme may have been to harvest resources for unseen human civilizations overseas. Why else would one burn down a forest aside for the pleasure of being a douche?

J.League PK Party, a "penalty kick" minigame.
I don't know if the OVA takes place on Mobius (not on Earth obviously), but there are humans in it.

About the games, the simple idea of little animals building zones such as Marble or Labyrinth makes me laugh, I'm convinced that humans built them a long time ago.

If you totally ignore any of the non-canon stuff, and focus solely on the games, humans were hinted at existing since Sonic 1, and shown for the first time in Sonic Adventure. Humans do exist in Sonic, in fact, the GUN army is a big example of this, as well as the various people you interact with and talk to. They seemt o inhabit certain area,s and obviously, they weren't shown in the original games, because that would have been stupid and pointless. We saw buildings, so we just had to assume.

I never thought about the ghosts in Sonic and Knuckles. I think that they're neither animal nor human to be honest. They look like devil spirits.

Soo..... what are we going by here? Post-SA canon or Pre-SA US canon or...?

    Personally, I don't care.

I don't think the concept of humans was that alien, it's just the execution in the 3D games that didn't seem to fit the franchise, eg. uncanny valley humans with grimdark stories and dull photo realistic cities. Few complain about the likes of Professor Pickle or some alt media additions such as Snively since they are cartoony in design similar to Eggman and fit the zany atmosphere a lot more. Using Elise and Maria meant a big change in the universe's backdrop since they don't exactly go side to side with cartoony worlds like Green Hill or candy colored anthros.

    >Implying the actuall name of the planet is Mobius.

I thought it has already been estabilished that the name 'Mobius' given to the planet that Sonic's adventures are unfolded are anything but a misinterpretation from the ocidental crew.

Both the japanese manuals and the Sonic bible/creation assets states that it's 'Earth.' Whether or not it's the same Earth of our time and space is up to argument.

From the past titles, the only games that where not in "Sonic's planet" were Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic Labyrinth (the former being in Flickies' Island, that happens to exist in another dimention, and the latter being just in another dimention).

The OVA happpens in 'Planet Freedom.'

The existance of human life forms have been shown since the very first game, with the appearance of ruins in Marble Zone, buildings and skyscrapers in Spring Yard Zone, and an entire city and construction site in Starlight Zone, and it gets worse from there on (the cities in Scrap Brain's, Chemical Plant's and Casino Night's backgrounds; Hidrocity, the city background in Carnival Night and Sandopolis in the Floating Island; and so on). And the thought of animals building such social estabilishments is just ridiculous.

Well, there's not really a pre or post Adventure canon at all. Canon was different in all regions, and the canon was based around the Sonic games as an interpretation, rather than having any sort of real basis.

The concept art for Sonic showed a blonde human girl in a red dress as his love interest, and if I'm not mistaken, in Japan, there were some manga's and stuff including humans. The fact that there were man-made objects and stuff, like cones, lights, buildings etc. in the games only furthered the notion that humans were a part of the Sonic universe, and if it weren't for the silly cartoons and comics aimed at younger audiences and instead more of a focus on just the basic Sonic stuff that we as a player could already see, then the final inclusion of humans into the 'proper' Sonic canon would have been easier to accept. Instead we as consumers/players have had to throw all our previous misconceptions out the window regarding fluffy friends like Sally and Porker Lewis.

Sonic X was pretty good though, in the fact that it seemed to continue the trend of Sonic cartoons, by having Sonic come from an animal world, into a human inhabited one. A nice piece of retro fan service.

AOSTH had Professor von Schlemmer and a handful of recurring background characters as well.
Then again AOSTH had a town populated by anthropomorphic sausages so

And why not? I don't see why a bunch of Sonic-like animals couldn't build cities and ruins. Heck, it's been shown to be possible with the all the ancient echidna stuff on Angel Island.

Sonic lives on Earth? I always thought it was South Island and Planet Freedom and whatnot. That's a lot more interesting than Urf and Morbius.

    Also:
Thanks for the nightmare fuel, pal.

  16. OVA calls it Planet Freedom with an outer dimension (Land of the Sky) and an inner dimension (Land of Darkness)

This is assuming Robotnik/Eggman is even supposed to be human. He's depicted as a living egg in the closest thing to canon the Japanese had before Sonic Adventure.

I was under the impression that the original Japanese games (since Sonic 1) were explicitly set on Earth because South Island was described as being in the South Pacific in the manual. However, after a quick trip to the wiki it turns out that the only manual to mention the South Pacific is Tails Adventure, so that might be non-canon.

Gathering information on Sega World Sydney and collecting Sonic merchandise.
Well, there was Wendy Witchcart from Tails Skypatrol. And in Sonic Christmas Blast, Sonic returns presents to a human boy. Plus, in the "Sonic bible" documents, there are many mentions of humans, such as when Sonic would pretend to be a ball in the bowling alley, or playing with human children in the playground.

But if you believe the Archie continuity, Mobius is a futuristic Earth. After a human act of aggression towards an extraterrestrial emissary sometime in the year 20XX, the Xorda bombarded the planet with powerful gene bombs with the intention of eradicating all humanoid life on the planet. These explosives inadvertently created the Mobian Chaos Emeralds, and also caused the native animals of the planet to mutate and rapidly evolve into the anthropomorphic Mobians. However, it should be noted that the evolution of the Mobians may not have been entirely due to the Xorda. The aliens inform Sally that Mobians "contain a sizable percentage of human DNA". It's possible that gene splicing may have been carried out beforehand. After all, Sally calls her race 'Mobo Sapiens.' Another possible result of the Xorda attack could have been the mutation that differentiates Overlanders from ordinary humans, both of which are found on Mobius.

  19. Sonic Christmas Blast had lots of humans, on Mobius even.
