Lynch in this case refers to David Lynch, as in the Twin Peaks (et al) guy. So, juxtaposition of mundane elements with the surreal. I don't see it happening, I think the gags are too frequent to pull off Lynch's style for even a full scene.
Correct! And... probably. Although, if it was given a greyscale filter and enough awkward vibes, it could be on par with Eraserhead.
So the map is far more interesting than I thought! I noticed the Sonic 1 concept art sun in the theatre, but I didn't realise the entire map IS the concept art! Also interesting on the bottom right is the chaos emerald with a bunch of ???'s on it, Sonic doesn't know what they are yet...
Seen the thing twice now and about to give it a third go. It's really fun. If there is a sequel, it may be a winner. Spoiler Tails at the end, doing what Tails does, was great. I had mid-'90s flashbacks while watching it. Jim Carrey is great in his role. Jeff Fowler pulled off the impossible. The movie is good. It isn't something that is going to be any more or less than what it is, and what it is is fun and charming. Cool beans. A sequel with Tails would be more adventurous. Take 'em to Vegas to riff on the casino theme.
I'm trying to get all the references present in this map, and the ones I hadn't noticed before are: -The bottom world looks like Robotnik's beta wrecking ball, the red one with the spinning white diamond); -The island looks exactly like the world map in Sonic 1 8-bit;
This movie motivated a friend of mine to start reading the IDW comics and I got them Sonic Mania as an early birthday gift and they like it so far. I hope the movie helps get even more people into the franchise like this. It was so fun and I'm happy that the movie went from laughing stock to proof of Sonic's relevance even in 2020. Can't wait for the sequel.
The movie was okay, by my books. Eggman was easily the best part. Parts of the movie were pure cringe, and Sonic's a bit too hyperactive/talkative for my liking. And the ending didn't make any sense, Spoiler: ending spoiler considering that as far as we understood, Eggman was working with the Government to but a stop to the potential threat that Sonic was seen as, and Tom had also become a terrorist in the eyes of the Government. But no, putting a stop to Eggman changed all of that somehow, and now Tom and Sonic are heroes.
While the map art itself is quite interesting, it's triggering a few doubt alarms in my head. Is South Island a world on its own? Angel Island may exist there as well, given the Echidna Tribe. But what about all the other places from the games continuity? Will they be their own worlds or something? Well... At least, this approach to locations could kinda help fix the varied amount of themed places in the games continuity, and even its timeline as a whole, if done somehow right.
Spoiler Personally I took it as the government seeing Robotnik wildly firing lasers in various famous places around the world (he even destroys the Sphynx with one of his shots) and realising that they needed to wash their hands of the guy, and fast.
Hmmm, not including South Island in the middle, there are 8 locations - one of which is just Earth (I assume). There's 7 Chaos Emeralds in the games (plus the Master Emerald), and the bottom-right 'logo' is also likely a Chaos Emerald. Coincidence?
Regarding the whole... Spoiler "How does Tails know Sonic if he hasn't been in his home world for years?" I could see Longclaw surviving the ordeal with the Echidna Tribe, and ending up meeting Tails some time later. Tails would be told stories about Sonic until something big in their home world made him think of looking for the blue blur. The Echidna Tribe might get a bigger relevance on a sequel, if it ever comes to happen.
Spoiler I'm thinking they'll make Sonic and Tails around the same age in this continuity and have them be childhood friends before Sonic hopped worlds. I'm also expecting them to have him fully identify as Miles, with Sonic calling him Tails in line with his established tendency to remember his own nicknames more than people's actual names. This will tie into Tails' character arc, where he's self-conscious about his two tails right up until he's pushed to use them to save someone, at which point he turns around on them and identifies himself as Tails the Fox. Calling it now. See you all in two or three years!
The sun seems familiar too. Is that from Sonic 1 concept art? Also the checkerboard planet could be a special stage from Sonic 3. Actually the whole thing looks like it's from a piece of Sonic 1 concept art
Yes, the overall design of the map comes straight from that one piece of Sonic 1 concept art, which works great in the movie. Usingh the Sonic 1 8-bit island was a great touch too, since the 8-bit games tend to be forgotten. What I was trying to identify was the inspiration for each of the worlds. There's obviously Earth, the Saturn logo, Sonic 3's Special Stage (or is that Robotnik's final wrecking ball?), and Mushroom Zone's mushrooms (which is interestingly the only world not depicted as an actual spherical planet). I'm assuming that the one with the diamond is based on some beta footage we have where Robotnik uses something similar instead of the checkered wrecking ball from the final. I unfortunately can't see anything of those 2 worlds that are completely scribbled over...
I find it funny that the concept art used for the map has been posted like four times (two just in this page), as if nobody actually reads the thread. :p
