Oi, Casino Street makes the physics engine intolerable. No matter where you are on the flipper you go straight up, and getting out of the fucking boss arena is a nightmare :specialed: .

It's worse than that- you go normally at first and then straight up. There's a part in the upper route of CSZ1 that's actually designed for this behaviour.

    EDIT: Fix'd

At least it's not like in sonic 2 when facing the Casino Night zone boss.

There was one time where I had defeated the boss and then tried to get out of the arena, only to some how get squished and die. :colbert: I mean, the boss is pretty easy, but I was still pretty pissed when this happened <_<

I dunno 'bout you, I'll take having a difficult time getting out of the arena every time a I fight the boss over one instance of glitch death any day of the week -_-

  4. I accidentally at first and then straight up. :specialed:

So, I don't really understand what you're trying to say here, but I've had several deaths due to the bumpers NOT flinging me straight up as I expected, but rather at a 45 degree angle straight into the electric pincer things of the Casino Street boss.

I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
But... getting out of the boss arena is as simple as walking up a slope. :psyduck:

EDIT @ HarrisonJ: It's the inertia physics. The pinball flippers will launch you in a given direction and you'll keep going if you're holding the d-pad in that direction, but if you're not, it isn't long before you just stop moving sideways and the only momentum you maintain is your vertical momentum. So you go diagonally at first, and then suddenly you're just going straight up.

I hate that stupid route. I can never consistently make it up there. Why a convex curve, why would you do that, DIMPs? An alternate route designed to take advantage of your shitty slope physics as well? Couldn't it have just been a collapsing platform or something? :psyduck:

    EDIT:

Ha... ha... ha... "I HAVE NO UNDERSTANDING OF THE..." why, I oughta...

Fixed it. If you don't hold any direction then the flippers knock you at the expected angle for a little bit, but then your horizontal movement stops and you go straight up. The only way to keep moving the way you'd expect is hold the d-pad in that direction. The fact that they identified this and treated it as normal is pretty laughable.

So, now that the initial feeling of "yay new game" has died down, it's time to see where it comes in my List of Favourite Sonic Games:

    1. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
    2. Sonic CD
    3. Sonic Unleashed
    4. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
    5. Sonic Advance
    6. Sonic the Hedgehog
    7. Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit)
    8. Sonic 4: Episode I
    9. Sonic Advance 3
    10. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)

Fun, but nothing on the classic MegaDrive games. This should've been better than it was, but I'm not too disappointed. Tune in next month for Sonic Colours' position!

In my opinion, I would have no problem with this game if it had a different title (well, um, not really). But because it's called Sonic 4, I was hoping for something that's a true sequel to Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which obviously, this game isn't. As a standalone game, it's definitely not bad, but as "Sonic the Hedgehog 4", it's bad.

On the topic of the CSZ flippers, I hate the way they simply don't work when you're close to the hinge. This prevents you from doing any short hops, like throwing Sonic from left flipper to right, or anything like that.

EVERY SONIC GAME EVER that contains flippers has let you do this, iirc. Why would they take it out!?!?!??! :argh:

Not only that, but for some reason you just poke along the bumper at the speed of slow.

+ - Did these guys take ANY physics and/or programming classes? :V

Mind you, Sonic 2 did the same thing, just not quite AS slow.

And it was definitely better that way. Sonic CD's pinball flippers were almost unusable.

Has anyone yet noticed that in Mad Gear Act 1's music for Wii that there is a momentary difference in the drum beats in part "C" of the song? It's actually kinda Sonic Heroes Esque and although it's just for a brief moment, it does give the tune a less "crazy drums" feel.

That's just criminal to put Sonic 4 higher than Sonic 2 8-bit. I've got a bucket of water here that your face needs splashing in.

Hm... If I were to make a top 10 list right now... It'd go something like this:

    1 ) Sonic 3 and Knuckles
    2 ) Sonic 2
3 ) Sonic 4 Episode 1/Sonic CD (Would have to play Sonic CD again to see where I'd put it )
    4 ) Sonic Rush Adventure
    5 ) Sonic Rush
    6 ) Sonic Advance
    7 ) Sonic 1
    8 ) Sonic Advance 3
    9 ) Sonic Adventure DX
    10 ) Sonic Advance 2

So, either 3rd or 4th favorite Sonic game so far, not counting non-platformers. As you can see, I really didn't care for Sonic 1. I couldn't really get into the gamegear sonics which is why they are absent from the list (I will admit that I have not played all of them nor have I played them on an actual gamegear. I have played sonic 1, sonic 2, the sonic drifts, Tails adventure, and sonic triple trouble, though. ) Sonic Adventure DX would probably be higher on the list had the only character that you played as was Sonic and maybe Tails. Sonic 3d Blast and Spinball are absent for what I can only assume are obvious reasons. Not sure if Episode 2 or 3 will put Sonic 4 higher on the list, but I'd say that I'm over all pretty happy.

I'd say make my list the exact same thing except replace Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic 2 8-bit with Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Adventure. And maybe make Sonic Advance and Unleashed switch positions. :specialed:

Still, it's good to know Sega's getting it again. Not there yet, but getting there. Sonic 4 is good enough to be considered a quality title, at least, and that's good.

    Working on my art!
My list is pretty similar to the previous ones

    1. Sonic 3 and Knuckles
    2. Sonic 2
    3. Sonic Unleashed 360
    4. Sonic CD
    5. Sonic 4 Episode 1
    6. Sonic Advance 3
    7. Sonic Adventure
    8. Sonic Advance
    9. Sonic 1
    10. Sonic Rush

I haven't played many of the GG titles so it wouldn't be fair to rank them. Plus I found them pointlessly difficult. But Sonic 4 was good. Disappointing, but good. Sure as hell beats Sonic 1 IMO (I don't care for Sonic 1. It's far too slow and I hate the level design. And before you say LOL BUT SAWNIK ISNT JUST ABOUT SPEEDDDD, I know that, and while Sonic 1 had a balance, it was only found in Starlight Zone and sort of GHZ. The rest of the levels were either far too slow or annoying as hell).

Now when Sonic Colors comes out, I may just have a new number 2, but let's not be hasty. That'd be knocking down the first game I ever played and still do, and that right there is a challenge.

    Trapped in my own thoughts.
Two stageplays, a screenplay, and an album
I guess this is now the top 10 thread? Seems we've all gone off-topic.

    Anyway, here's mine.
    1. Sonic 3 and Knuckles
    2. Sonic 2
    3. Sonic 4 Episode I
    4. Sonic Advance
    5. Sonic Rush Adventure
    6. Sonic Rush
    7. Sonic Adventure
    8. Sonic Adventure 2
    9. Sonic 1
    10. Sonic CD

I'll be honest, CD barely even made it onto the list. Unleashed Wii (haven't played 360/PS3), Heroes, Advance 2, and Advance 3 all came really close to beating it.

Of course, if Sonic Battle counted as a platformer, it'd be #2 easily.

I still agree this doesn't live up to Sonic 4's name and isn't as well programmed but I still am surprised how much hate it gets, which I know stems from the title and people viewing changes too be bad and of course "TEH PHYSICS" but I mean... The old Sonic games weren't exactly godly pieces of perfection either.

And I know I experienced more when playing myself, and I agree this game has some problems they need to fix but I still don't know why people want the game to be exactly like the classics, personally I think they should aim to do something better which Sonic 4 doesn't cut so far, but there should be some things from the classics they should note and other things that weren't perfect they should improve.

That may be, but from my viewpoint, these types of glitches really shouldn't exist in a platformer these days. I don't even care about Sonic standing on a vertical slope (wall?) as much as I can't believe they destroyed all manner of momentum & inertia. That's the more critical flaw Sonic 4 has.
