I didn't played S3K in 16:9 yet, but I think that lava reef act 2 boss has more space, that means it has even more time for bombs to swim from one side of screen to another one.
    Definitely worst boss in history.

actually yeah i think you're right but ive only played that boss in origins once.

the solution in this case is to just remove the boss

  4. Or allow to hit him youself, because despite this boss' problems, you gotta admit it got an awesome atmosphere to tell the player's getting close to the endgame.

Aquatic Ruin Zone. In 4:3, you can spin dash repeatedly off of one of the pillars and as long as you time it right, you'll hit him every time. In 16:9, he gets too far away for you to do that.

4:3 version also has "funny" bug, that makes you stuck on one of the pillars, and because of this you can't spindash boss. Just jump, so it's not that serious difference ;)

  7. There are a few whose arenas are stretched in 16:9 compared to the Og 10:7 (320x224, the internal Genesis screen resolution, isn’t actually 4:3). The ARZ boss was already mentioned, but I’d also like to bring note to the GHZ boss, as that boss ends up moving horizontally much faster to make up for the difference in distance between the screen edges; a change that can be seen as a negative for sure.

It and the ARZ boss are the only two I can think of that explicitly got harder from being in 16:9, though.

Funnily enough 16:9 actually makes Big Arms more interesting when you fight it in your Super forms. They made it so you no longer could cheese Big Arms by walking on top of it while it patrols below the platform. However because it's extended to 16:9, they also made it so when you go over the pits at the edge of the screen, you float around like at the start of Sky Sanctuary. This floating state is just low enough for you to hit Big Arms below the level. So, at least in my opinion, I'd say that's an improvement.

"Netflix Games" behooves me. Literally like... why not play on a console? Or download on your phone otherwise? Why is it connected to Netflix?

Anyway, I started an Encore playthrough for the first time in literally years. Game is absolutely awesome, still, and will be forever remembered as one of the greats in the series.

Idk why but I had this memory in my mind of it being overly derivative of the Genesis games, and yea it is in the respect that it reuses levels and such, but it is loaded with so many new ideas and so much flavor it will is it's own thing. Encore mode alone is such a great feature that I'd have loved to see in the Origins ports, but alas they decided to do bare minimum there lmao.

As long as it provides us with more Android games and Android ports of games, I don't care what they do, except actually make the things available on the Play Store to devices instead of arbitrarily limiting them from devices that should be able to play them anyways. It was "Whatever" with the GTA Trilogy games, but it's just astounding with Sonic Mania, especially when Sonic Prime Dash is perfectly installable.

Can't install it either, and my phone isn't even three years old.

I don't get it, the game really isn't that demanding resource-wise as far as I know.

Could it have something to do with the special stages? Those struggle to run smoothly in all the fanmade console ports.

The game lags a small but noticeable amount on my S21 Ultra, both in and out of the Stories Stages. Whatever is going on, it's not a well optimised port.

I was actually excited to try this out but I'm a freeloader who uses my brother's Netflix account and Netflix banned password sharing so I can't :/

I tried this out when it soft-launched in the Philippines. I'm using a Galaxy S20.

It's... definitely a version of Sonic Mania you can play on the phone. It's locked to 16:9 like the original, so if your phone has a wider screen you'll get black borders where the controls sit. The new additions to the controls and UI are very haphazard and unpolished, and there's a bit of stuttering during gameplay. But overall, this is still the same game, and it's on the phone. Could be a lot worse.

If you're an Android user don't mind getting your hands dirty, I would recommend instead using the decomp version of Mania with the Mania Touch Controls mod, as it works with wide aspect ratios (mostly) and doesn't require a Netflix subscription.

Played this a bit on my galaxy S23. Here's some gameplay I recorded:

It plays alright. I hope the cheat codes still work as I really don't want to have to get all 32 gold medallions in order to unlock the pinball bonus stage in Mania mode, which will be a bit of a nightmare to achieve using touchscreen controls.

    A random question:

Does Mania have visual cohesion? I mean like, with it borrowing sprites and visuals from Sonic 1, 2, CD, and 3, do the styles blend together well? I feel like it actually does, despite each game having sort of a different art style, especially 3 from the rest of em.
