More Sonic MAX shenanigans. Will hopefully have an update ready for SAGE featuring at least Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Amy and Mighty. Still need sprites for some of the gimmicks however. Then Mario in Mario in Sonic MAX: :v:/>
I've decided to start working on a 2.5D remake of Sonic 1 using Unreal as a fun side project. I wanted to use the classic Sonic model from Generations but upon extracting it the model and rig was a mess, broken and some of the options for the mouth (stuck wide open) were not accessible. They also had no original options for the mouth which used a swapping process by the looks of it. I looked up some tutorials and the like but some were outdated and some plugins weren't working right for me. I took the original game model and de-triangulated it and reworked it a bit (attached one of the mouth pieces) and then re-rigged it with a new rig. My goal is to get the new model into Unreal with some animations, eventually if all plans out I can release the original 3D files with rig and an Unreal file setup so that anyone can open it and not have to worry about ripping and figuring out how to get Sonic up an running and this way anyone can start bringing in their own models and hopefully make some cool stuff. Right now I wanna base the animations off of Sonic 1. The model and rig are pretty good so far although I may need to make some adjustments (adding easy selectable handles and controllers) and I've been catch a few weights that need a little touch up work here and there before I can put it up but hopefully I wanna have that done soon and I'll probably release the model and rig for anyone who wants to use it. Sonic model with rig WIP (needs adjustments) A tileset from Scrap Brain Zone
unreal's shadows are ugly as sin so hopefully you can find a way to render high quality shadow maps and use those yourself. I THINK you can replace the baked shadow texture in Unreal... you should be able to. If not, another reason why this engine is more limited than it needs to be Neat though! Lookign forward to what you can do. @Okamikurainya lmao the reticules in Sonic 1 give me mixed feelings honestly.
Yeah... It was also a bit of a showcase of how much Modern Sonic gameplay breaks the Classic games. I've moved all of the Modern abilities from Sonic over to Shadow in the same way that the World's engine does it. Also working on adding various Freedom Planet gimmicks to the engine as well.
Looks really good. I feel Sonic's highlight is a bit too bright, and the waterfall should be a tad more opaque for my tastes. All in all, pretty solid.
Upcoming fan project of mine Spoiler It's a new version of this (well, effectively) that I made 7 years ago: http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_Maker The idea for this project came to me a long time ago, not because of Mario Maker!
Oh man that looks spiffy as hell. One of the best fan title screens I've ever seen, definitely the most stylish.

That is some top tier quality title screen you got there. That is such a shit eating grin you gave him though haha.
He's just thinking about everyone who scoffs at the idea of a Sonic Maker Spoiler I know it's a flawed concept due to any classic Sonic game's complexity so I'm just playing to all strengths I find
Can't wait for this, why more companies haven't jumped on the idea of making a "maker" type game is beyond me. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with and I'm definitely gonna watch for this project.
I'll be clear with my intentions for it ~ It wont be a replacement for actual fangame creation tools (GM, MMF, etc). It'll be a fun little 'toy' you can mess with and create Sonic levels quickly and easily which get autotextured (but you can place decorations). Basically just a bit of fun! Same scope as Mario maker (just as it was 7 years ago). Sans the online sharing thing, levels will save as files as you'd expect. There are tonnes of limitations with this idea, and I recognise them, it won't ever be as customisable as a real fangame of course. The value is the ease of use and just removing the tech + keeping the fun of Sonic level design.
That looks so awesome, Lapper! Great work! Very fluid. Loving the design. Coincidentally I also started working on SONIC INFINITY's titlescreen. Doesn't look half as awesome as Lapper's but still:
The Sonic Infinity title screen is seriously giving me classic Amiga and DOS game vibes due to the shading. It's gorgeous!
