Sonic Mania (Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC...Netflix?)

Discussion in 'General Sonic Discussion' started by TimmiT, Jul 23, 2016.

  1. I'm expecting a new build to be used in the preview later this week, since they've announced this one a month in advance, and it's about time for the announcement of a new zone.

    Edit:
Since this might be my last chance , I might as well give my zone predictions, which I've been thinking about over the last eight months. Since we still don't know how many zones are going to be in the game, I'm assuming a range of five to ten remixed zones.

    Sonic 1:
There's no way we'll see Marble or Labyrinth, since the amount of new content required to make them Mania-quality would be better spent on a whole new zone (which is kind of what Hydrocity and Marble Garden are, to a degree). Spring Yard would be a good pick, but with the CPU/COPE in Studiopolis and Roller badnik in Mirage Saloon, it doesn't seem like it's going to happen (which is a shame, because it's one of my least favourite zones of the classic games and I'd like to see it done right). Star Light seems the most likely, until you remember how much everyone loves Stardust Speedway (including me). Ultimately I think Scrap Brain is the most likely, as the devs have plenty of elements from later games to draw from in remaking it. That said, unless they're going all-out and including two zones from each game, Green Hill will probably be the only one.

    Sonic 2:
Chemical Plant would be the obvious pick were it not for Generations, and I don't think even SEGA are willing to risk using it again (I wonder if the devs or SEGA got to pick the levels?) Aquatic Ruin would be a good choice, it's a level with lots of room for expansion, but it might be a bit too similar to the new Green Hill. Casino Night has been done to death, especially by Sonic 4 and Generations 3DS in quick succession. Hill Top, Oil Ocean and Metropolis are all kind of 'eh'. Wing Fortress would be a contender were it not for Sonic 4 ruining it. Thus, Mystic Cave is easily the most likely zone to be in Mania, to the point of saying I'm 99% sure of it. It's got a unique theme, great design, lots of potential and fantastic music.

    Sonic CD:
Most of SCD's zones (mneh) are already 'remixes' of Sonic 1 zones, which makes things a bit hard. I don't see Palmtree Panic, Tidal Tempest or Metallic Madness being used. Collision Chaos would be interesting, but we already have a lot of the game's 'bounce' quotient covered between Studiopolis and Mirage Saloon. Wacky Workbench is probably out because everyone except me hates it. Quartz Quadrant is the most original level theme in CD, so I think it's the most likely to make an appearance, though I would personally prefer Stardust Speedway. I want to speed through a maze of overlapping, layered roads, but without CD's consistent clunk. Ideally, we'll get both QQ and SS.

    Sonic 3 & Knuckles:
I think this is where the most interesting remixes will come from, and it's much harder to pick zones than the other games. Angel Island is too similar to Green Hill to make an appearance. Mushroom Hill was in Sonic Generations 3DS and Sky Sanctuary was in Generations Proper so I don't see them appearing again. We know Sandopolis won't appear because of Mirage Saloon. Marble Garden was great, but I think it exhausted its potential the first time. The zone I most want from Sonic 3 is Hydrocity, and the zone I most want from S&K is Lava Reef, but there are lots of other contenders. Flying Battery and Death Egg presumably crashed somewhere and are now overgrown wreckage. Ice Cap could certainly benefit from an overhaul, and it's near-universally loved. Carnival Night and Launch Base are both excellent zones in their own right. I guess the most likely four are Hydrocity, Ice Cap, Flying Battery and Lava Reef? Though I won't be surprised if the plot involves the Death Egg somehow.

  3. Would be cool for some wiki pro to archive all this stuff regarding this build!

I wonder if the PC Version of Mania will include Mod Support/Workshop Support, I feel like it would be cool to see like a boost mod, or some graphic's mod, or editing stage layout to recreate old stages

Considering they've been allowing literal rom hacks to be used in their official emulated Genesis library, I wouldn't put it past them to open up the doors for modding. But it's tough to really say for sure.

Either way, I'm sure people will end up cracking it and filling the internet with Ow The Edge mods. :V

Hi ICEKnight! Good to meet you.
There's a lot of 'worry' I've seen in this thread. Let's just marvel over the good music we've heard so far, alongside the zones, and enjoy it instead.

Or we could also acknowledge game's glitches and tiny (yet obvious and easy to fix) flaws in a hope that devs, who don't exist in a vacuum and are not brought down by the language barrier and also often visit this thread and actually very likely read the feedback, will approach them.
    How about that?

I know that sounds crazy but people here actually can acknowledge problems and simultaneously be extremely optimistic and excited about the game.

So you are so worried about the developer's competency that you don't think they know about bugs like Sonic's animation in the corkscrew screwing up? Oof. :v:

Seriously though, pointing out bugs and flaws is fine and can be helpful to the developers, but if you are doing it for that reason then you should talk about stuff they might not know rather than stuff they definitely already know. The team behind this game knows their shit and there's no reason to be worried that they might not have noticed the more obvious bugs and flaws in an unfinished version of their game. It's very likely that they already know about them and just haven't gotten around to fixing that stuff.

Not that the more obvious stuff shouldn't be pointed out, cause seeing that stuff can be interesting and/or funny. But don't do it cause you think the developers aren't competent enough to not notice that stuff by themselves.

Tails' face is the perfect example of what I'm talking about. You know the one.
Not that it's really bothering me in particular but I see why it's being brought up so often.
I'm OK with Tax and co not taking any of the feedback into consideration cause I have faith in them. But not bringing up any of the concerns just to "stay positive" is just silly. People are positive about the game and it shows on every page of this thread.

That's a perfect example of a sprite looking messy cause of a low video bitrate, yes.

I actually am. It might look like an evil smile in blurry images like this where it looks like this cause of Youtube's video compression:

But what it really looks like is Tails being frustrated and puffing his cheek, which is a pretty common thing in cartoons and anime:

    Working on my art!
I have yet to see any footage where that face looks good. At some point it's not the video compression. I know what it's supposed to be but it looks like Tails is about to rip one.

I already regret that I got into such a stupid argument with you of all people, TimmiT, so I'll just leave it at that.

The above image looks crisp enough to me to tell how the sprite looks like.
I can easily see how people can take an issue with it. I see zero harm in expressing these concerns while staying positive.

I'd say that looks like a puffed cheek. If you try to look at it as a creepy smile then yeah then I can see that, and maybe it could have been drawn in a way where you can't see it as a creepy smile. But it's pretty clear to me that that's not what it is.

    Back to my point though:

  16. I think it looks fine...

I'm more concerned that the team gets on with finishing the game (which I'm sure they are) rather than worrying about nitpicking on here a la' S2HD :)

That's a smile, not a cheek. If a puffed cheek is what they were going for, they should've bulged the spot where that white tuft of fur is, that's roughly where the lateral axis of his head should fall in a 3/4 view.

I like that face a lot, by the way.

  18. Really confused how it could be a smile when the rest of his face is strained, he's got sweat running down his head, and that only happens when he's carrying Sonic. It's just a more exaggerated version of this:

But this is a really silly reason to get into it over. :v:
