Sonic 4: Episode 1 Discussion

Discussion in 'General Sonic Discussion' started by Cinossu, Oct 11, 2010.

  1. Stop acting so defensive, I didn't say everyone thought the game was crap. My point was that this community, having a lot of technical knowledge regarding the Sonic games, is able to explain in more detail how the physics is different (notice the use of this word before saying I'm randomly attacking the game), but that doesn't mean that the average person can't tell that something is off about the physics, regardless of whether that stopped them from playing the game or not. Every review I read and every person I talked to (outside of Retro even) mentioned this issue, even if they didn't consider it game-breaking.

Oh! Well I appreciate the effort, but what program do you use to capture it? I'm actually the creator of the tune....cubedtothex=xcubed :)

I apologise. It seemed as though you were saying "they couldn't work out what was wrong, so ignored it" as opposed to "they don't describe it in as much detail as we can". Again, I apologise.

Quite a few reviews I have read, however, have explicitly pointed out the lack of forward momentum being the main problem with the physics (e.g. see the Retro Gamer review I posted a few pages back). It seems to me that the general public (and by that, I mean people outside the Sonic fandom) that have played the game have noted the lack of forward momentum, and this (hopefully) increases the chance of this being fixed for Episode II.

XBLA Sales Figures are in. Let's just say Sonic didn't do as well as, say, a piece of meat.

Hell, even Sonic Adventure sold more.

Granted, it's been out longer, but still. So yeah.

I'm torn. Do I want S4 to sell badly cause it's a bad game, or do I want it to sell well so SEGA have an incentive to make more, and hopefully better 2D games on consoles?

Crap, Sonic seems to be dying when the series is starting to revive again. Why couldn't it have died back in 06 then I wouldn't feel like I was missing out on anything since the future looked dark.

I bet Sonic 4 sold as badly as it did in part though due to the fucking price. Sonic 4 episode 1 is not worth $15. The whole thing combined though might be worth $15.

Note the asterisk on Sonic 4 - "statistics lower due to limited knowledge". I don't doubt that Super Meat Boy outsold it, though.

I think the asterisk means that more copies could have been sold. Apparently the chart only counted players who uploaded a score to the Leaderboards or something.

I also forgot to link to the source, here. http://www.trueachievements.com/n2325/xbla...es—october.htm

  9. The price point is indeed wack and no doubt impacted sales. The whole "episode 1" and "1200 MS points" probably killed it for a lot of people.

Maybe episode 2 will be 800 points, which is much more reasonable.

Uh, yes. I'm sure there's still a handful of people with only a Wii that haven't been able to play it yet.

Sonic (?): Coming summer of 2055...?
This is what I mean. Only people like us consider the "off" physics to be game breaking. Most people shrug and continue to enjoy the game. So people that might not have played episode 1 yet, and aren't like us (using the term very broadly, if thats not obvious), could enjoy the episode 1 demo and go on to buy episode 2.

Just put a "pwn" before the youtube link. So like www.youtube.com/watchei3324gty39d youd change it to www.pwnyoutube.com/watchei3324gty39d

From there, just choose one of the many MP3 options. I think I used tube2mp3 or something.

I can certainly enjoy Sonic Colors, which is an amazing game, but I can still tear it apart for its flaws. The door swings both ways. I think I can enjoy Colors (both the DS and Wii versions) more than Sonic 4, but Sonic 4 is still the most retro out of the three, so it definitely has that appeal going for it. It's not terrible, its just flawed, uninspired, and a tad overpriced.

Hmm, I thought this game would be doing better. I mean, it's one of the few XBLA titles I've actually seen advertised outside of the Xbox itself, there were ads in Gamestop set aside cards to which you could download the game from. Didn't the WiiWare version wind up doing well? It's not my favorite Sonic game, but from what I played I did enjoy it and I'd like to see SEGA improve upon the mistakes they made with this one in Episode II.

I'm not arguing whether or not Sonic 4 is good. I'm just saying a demo of the "inferior" Ep 1 probably won't hamper sales of Ep 2.

Probably not. After all, wouldn't people play the demo for Episode II if they wanted to see whether or not to get it? If SEGA's going to release a demo for the first, then why not the second?

I'm pretty sure the demo of ep 1 will be available before the demo of ep 2 once ep 2 is announced.

  18. I've gotten into playing this game on my iPod Touch with the Sonic Simulator music from Colours playing. It's awesome.

Using MIDIs by steveswede, I made a few versions of various Sonic 4 songs. I might upload some of these to the Tubes if they don't suck

Splash Hill Zone Act 3, with real(er) insturments.

My take on Mad Gear Zone Act 1

Casino Street Zone 2 sounds so much more fitting with NES sounds.

Splash Hill Zone Act 2 On the Piano

Half joke, half cool, I've started to actually like these

    Casino Street Zone, why not?

Hey, there I'm new to this site.

Anyways, I was just wondering, is Sega planning on redesigning Sonic to classic sonic again?
