I recently got the JAP version of Sonic 1 v.2 and who ever had it before left some old reviews in it. The most interesting has to be this one since it features both Spring Yard and Sparkling Zone as different levels. Also, check out the bottom, it says Clockwork Zone even though it has a screenshot of Labyrinth Zone and of course this name was changed. My guess is the magazine (Computer and Video Games) wanted to get their review out first and just screwed up completely.

One of those shots is a new beta shot, the others are not beta shots.

My suspision? The review is entirely fake, in the sense that they simply slapped a bunch of beta screenshots together, took a few preview tidbits, and called it a review.

That new beta shot has these small spikeball windmills. Used in Collision Chaos Sonic CD.

Very clear scan! I hope it isn't fake.

It looks like that spikeball thingy is coming out of a bumper, like the ones over the rest of the screen.

It's the same object used in SYZ final:

My opinion is that this is a fake. First clue, though I'm not so sure about this is the Ring/Rings where only one image says Ring. Secondly, I believe Robotnik was not being called eggman at the time of Sonic 1's release, if I'm wrong on that too I'll shut up, but my opinion is Fake.

EDIT: Nevermind, looked it up, Robotnik was called Eggman in the JP release, I withdraw my statements.

But wasn't sonic released in the US first ?
Unless they had originally called him eggman in the US version at some point, surely they would have told UK journalists the English name :S

Also, as far as putting sparkling zone in as well as SYZ, they had probably written it, found out later, but accidentally put it in, thinking sparkling = star light zone, obviously not checking facts up beforehand.

  9. The only problem with that is that the blurb for Sparkling Zone sounds nothing like Star Light Zone. Actually, it doesn't even really fit in with the normal Spring Yard. Maybe a casino level was planned for *shot*

Given the fact that Sonic 1 was the biggest game of the year, I reckon the magazine just wanted a review so they could have an "Exclusive", meaning they could stick an image of Sonic on their front cover with the words "First UK review!" and the magazine would sell no matter what. However the cost of this would be that the magazine hadn't actually played the game. I would have liked to have had the issue a few months later where people were asking about Sparkling Zone and Clockwork Zone in the letter pages and the magazine would have to make some excuses.

I just found another cut out of this review and it's pretty obvious that whoever was in charge of screenshots did a bad job, because there is a Labyrinth Zone shot that is upside down and mirrored. :wtf:

And yes, the spikeballs are coming out of the bumper. Seems a very strange place to have them, I'd say they would be very hard to avoid if they made it into the final game.

I'm saying that they probably went by just the title, thus making the mistake

whoever said the review's are fake are morons.

Why would Galvatron go to all that effort of creating a new screen and post a fake review when hes in his trial period? to impress us?

no, hes being helpful and all you fucking sceptics jump at anyone who has any new info.

    its getting worse than SClassic....

Well what the hell are we susposed to do when a new discovery appears? Assume its real and not even investigate it? I did research it and all info did seem to pull together, so I will change my opinion from fake to genuine real. Although, whoever was laying out the thing was fucking horrible at it.

its an early '90s mag, I have some old game mags myself and trust me, it was like that. there was a magazine called PC Attack that has this terrible ripout thing with staff members popping out of the 'hole' and pointing to random stuff on the page, usually the rip is over the top of important info as well!

it was bad back then, trust me (don't forget, Photoshop and InDesign didnt exist back then).

Nah, impressing us is not the right word. Getting himself approved is more the right word.

I still think that screenshot is exclusive. It's very clear, and it still is a photo like the eggmobile in that review, I have a magazine that has the same short of scanlines in it. So it's real in my eyes.

The top-right text doesn't seem to fit the article, like it's a different resolution. It could just be me, though.

I don't see the difference, though that "Eggman zips off" line being curved hurts my eyes for some reason. :P

Here, hopefully this is proof. As you can see there is the other cut out making up another half of the review. And I'm really not good enough to make something look that professional, either. Well, last trial post, I hope to be back soon.

How do you know it's the Jap version 2? Where did it come from? Could you scan the left-hand side, please?

(Sorry for firing off questions, it's just there's been so many hoaxes in the past...)

    EDIT - Clarity
