Genuinely surprised there isn't a topic on this yet. No one involved in this project that I know of has an account here, so I thought I'd be the one to bring it up. http://youtu.be/lXUAhtgafIU A guy named Gistix and his team are apparently recreating Sonic 06 in Unity on PC, starting with the original demo's content. Speaking of the demo, it appears to be largely based on the demo's physics, animations, and other such things. It's highly impressive work, matching nearly 1:1 in terms of gameplay and attention to detail, from what I can gather. I believe he said a demo will be appearing at this year's SAGE, and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it. Thoughts? EDIT: It goes without saying that 06 was obviously a bad game and the way this is going it won't exactly be a huge improvement. We have very little to go on right now, other than the one stage, and I think the work it took to get this functional is extremely impressive in itself.
So essentially polishing a turd. I would have only been slightly happy to see this if they had used actual momentum based physics instead of just recreating one of the most (imo) horrible aspects of the game. I seriously don't understand why people are so bent on recreating this game in any manner.
I know there's only so much that can be improved in a close recreation, but I'm personally just fascinated by the technical aspect of creating the engine from scratch in Unity. That's the most impressive part of this to me.
Writing code to match those kind of physics isn't impressive in any sort of form. That's like stating how impressive it is to write "Hello World" in a programming language that isn't C/C++.
This impresses my puny untrained mind as well. :v: ...That said, I really don't understand why these '06 recreation projects insist on keeping so much of it. For one thing, that model and those animations assault the eyes.
It is impressive work and I'm glad you posted this to bring this to our attention - but this is one particular Sonic game which carries a lot of long-held negative sentiment given how disappointed everyone was with it originally and it generally being regarded as the worst Sonic game of all-time. So with that in mind most of the responses you're going to see here are going to based around how people feel about the actual game as opposed to this guy's quite impressive and technically proficient recreation of it. Unfortunately. My opinion? Sonic 06's primary fault was that Sonic Team released it in an unfinished state. Broken even. If this guy and his team intend to iterate and improve upon the original game potentially rectifying some of the game's notorious issues in this conversion then this project becomes a trillion times more interesting because it could result in the game actually becoming decent and playable. However if it truly is just a 1-1 recreation that is the exact same game ported over then I'm not seeing the point here. Any more details on their intentions? What is their endgame here?
Like I said, the content shown appears to be heavily based on the original Kingdom Valley demo, said demo being representative of an earlier, more polished build of the game than we eventually got. That said, I do think their intention is to recreate the game to most closely match that build, but there isn't a lot of info floating around on it. We'll have to wait and see.
The simple reason everyone wants to remake this game is that they see potential like most of us do but the people who remake this believe that it's only glitches and loading screens that is wrong with this game. Unfortunately, that's far from the case.
If you want to get 'impressed' go to the Shenmue 3 kickstarter page. You don't simply advertise the tools you are using on how easy is to have something playable without making models yourself and any programming. YES, they basically boasted they don't have any programmers and scene artists. Month 3 progress report. How does it take them 3 months to set the main character in a new pose and put him in one of the default UE 4 scenes? Yes engines and tools that do some things for you are cool, as long as you don't use them as a placeholder for skill. Yes 3D rendering does camera, perspective and lighting for you but if you don't know these things and composition in 2D, then your result is going to suck. There is no substitute for hard work.
Fuck you guys. This already looks better than 95% of fans' attempts at creating a 3D Sonic fangame. If so many people praise and try to recreate Sonic 06 then there are aspect of this game to be enjoyed. I'd play Sonic 06 over SLW or ShTH any day. My only hope is that controls are keyboard only/gamepad rather than keyboard + mouse for camera.
Uh, okay? If you want to play it, cool. Glad you've now got something to play. Not everyone has to like what you like. We can still be friends though
I'd be more interested in a reimagining rather than a remake. Even without glitches and epoch-long loading times, the game is just mediocre. I liked some of the scenery in the game though, and some of the gameplay and plot was even interesting.
Not all that glitters is gold. :P I admit it's impressive too, so much work and it's a 1:1 attempt and it takes time and effort to reach that. Problem is there's a lot of inherent flaws in 06 that just won't be fixed the way this is going. (though the stages might become fun if the gameplay style and physics were made more like a hybrid of Generations and Adventure)
Except people here act like the only two things that glitter are either gold or shit. Sure I'd prefer a Sonic Adventure-esq physics and level design, but what I see before my eyes looks not only impressive but also playable and even enjoyable.
Playable? sure. Enjoyable? Well if that's the case or not is of course subjective but also noooooo. It's not that we all think that something's either just great or terrible, it's just that Sonic 2006 is actually legitimately a terrible game. Like others have said: this is incredibly impressive. I'm amazed that these people managed to remake Sonic 2006 so close to the original on PC. But also, Sonic 2006 is a terrible game. I don't need to go over the reasons why, plenty of people have already explained why over the years and it's pretty much an accepted fact at this point. It's so shit that even SEGA themselves make fun of the game. I don't think that many people who know how hard it is to make a game would react to this in any other way as "this is really impressive but also why????".
So sick of people who don't have a clue what they're talking about criticizing Sonic 06. There were bad elements, but anything that was actually FINISHED was excellent. Sonic 06 had incredible level design, the weak link was the engine itself.
Which was literally only the soundtrack. Last I checked that's not a gameplay element. ENGINE. Seriously. The weak link wasn't the fucking Havok Engine. The weak link was the devs not implementing (or reverting (see the change in the homing attack from the E3 demo to the released version)), good momentum based physics. Stop throwing buzzwords around.
