Honestly, it makes sense to me. I love classic Stingray Corvettes. Sonic is a personified hedgehog who loves speed. I fully expect him to have a favorite car.

And once again, popular TV anime continue to influence the franchise's earlier roots. These guys were clearly massive otaku, and I do enjoy seeing it being even further fleshed out.

Granted, that wasn't exactly uncommon for Japanese game development in that era.

Well the Dragon Ball influence isn't surprising considering the game slaps you in the face with it with Super Sonic, but it's extremely cute that it goes as far as defining Sonic and Tails' relationship. I feel like the Yatsura connection was made by some people prior as well, I think I've read a comment or two before pointing it out but it's nice to get a confirmation on it.

 

Sonic and Tails being based on Piccolo and Gohan makes so much sense. I've always preferred the idea that Sonic was a "dad" rather than a "big brother". Although that made more sense in the beginning when Sonic was 18 rather than 15.

When was Sonic aged 18? Before Sonic JAM, had somewhere stated his age?

 

People didn't "make the connection" tho. They knew it for a fact from Judy Totoya revealing it all a while ago.

 

The Sonic 3 Promo tape that released with the character bios had Sonic listed as "15 - 16 Years" so I don't think he was ever 18 in canon, especially during the Genesis era.

 

Maybe I'm tripping but I feel this is an underrated point. It wasn't like Sega had an in-house composer whip up a whole bunch of songs and they selected from the best of the pool, they pretty much contracted a damn celebrity to do it. Hell, I always assumed that —more so than any technical stuff, but what do I know?— was the biggest reason that that mystery song remained accessible in the soundtest. Figuring since they paid for it, they might as well at least let buyers/players be able to listen to it for the hell of it even though it doesn't have an actual in-game purpose (any longer).

Man, Dragon Ball really influenced Sonic. We have:
- Picollo & Gohan = Sonic & Tails relationship
- Super Saiyan = Super Sonic
- King Kai Planet = Blue Spheres Stages
- 7 Chaos Emeralds = 7 Dragon Balls (probably, but this might be a stretch)
- Silver = Future Trunks

Are there other ones? I suppose it started with Sonic 2...
