Sonic Superstars: A New 2D Sonic Game (Fall 2023)

So after watching those videos, I can see the physics are very faithful to the classics. No issues there. 0 complaints. It's about as close to ideal as I'll realistically ever get in 2.5D Sonic, save crazy levels of tweaks like what I'd get in fan mods like CD Restored or Sonic 1 Forever.

Stage design is... as I expected mixed, but there at least seems to be a lot of options in terms of paths you can take, so that helps. I actually think I like the cyber station stage design more than pinball carnival since the latter really seems to retread Casino Night way too heavily (again, after Generations, Sonic 4, and Sonic Pocket Adventure all did it quite blatantly) for my tastes. I'm also not the biggest fan of what looks to be a lot of reliance on thin rails all over the game's stages, but it's not a sin that's completely divorced from classic design either (Chemical Plant and Hydrocity come to mind), so that may just be me nitpicking.

The gated Cyber gimmicks seem a bit forced and disrupt the pacing for speedrunners, but the rest of the stage has a lot of pathways and the other gimmicks (zipping on the circuits and freely jumping out of them with momentum intact) are actually kind of clever and fit right in with the classic physics and give the player a good amount of autonomy. I see one somewhat cheap but still avoidable pit death about 5 minutes in. Not seeing lots of dash pads that take away player autonomy either.

I'd be interested to hear more of people's thoughts on the footage.

I assume most likely, frontiers and origins got it, why would sega decide now to not add that garbage

 

Cyber Station has moments that remind me of Pulseman and that's a good thing. Actually, I really love this. Especially Cyber Station. While watching, I had a sensation I haven't felt since the first time I played Sonic 1 in 1991. I can't put my finger on what this sensation is. Whatever it is, it's a very good thing in my book.

 

Oooh I absolutely loved the part with the little mouse and I can already imagine some people hating on it.

The jellyfish one seems less interesting, but the mouse one? The person who played it got screwed like three times and had to restart from the bottom. I love to see it. And who cares about speedrunners.

 

I think the gimmick itself is neat, and it has the chance to give you a lot of control options/autonomy, but I did notice a few points where you really couldn't easily see if an enemy was going to hit and knock you off.

Hopefully, that becomes easier to figure out when actually playing, and doesn't just resemble a Dimps like enemy placement trick.

 

I don't mind. It's a short enough segment with a noticeable but ultimately negligible punishment for getting hit, and I think it's quite nice to know that you have to take your chances once in a while. The enemies seem to have a very clear pattern too (they like. Circle around), so it should be easy to figure out that something might be ahead.

 

Just placed my Amazon JP order. Man, the yen is super weak right now. $49 for Superstars and then $30 for Samba De Amigo. Superstars is only $35 if you forgo the "Amazon Exclusive" version with the cel-shading skin.

 

Those 15+ second Switch loading times.

 

Oof. I haven't watched many videos but that sounds rough.

 

Happily, if I'm the one being the most negative voice in the room over these things, I think that means I can live with it.

Glad to see people are excited for the game. I very much want it to live up to the hype.

 

You know, I don't think we've seen any evidence of a single-player mode with both Sonic & Tails like in past games... I really hope that's not the case...

 

Unfortunately not, it was the first thing I was looking for, but my Amazon order didn’t have it either so I jumped ship.

 

Pinball Carnival looks completely unoriginal and Cyber Station looks like one of the worst levels they've put in a 2d Sonic game, visually and gameplay wise.
