I also thought those bumpers in Casino Night Zone were chilli dogs, and that by hitting them, you were somehow heating them up until Sonic ate them.

Back when I was a little guy, I used to think:

That the Emerald Hill background was Green Hill Zone (still do).

That the Burrobots in Labrinth Zone were wearing baseball caps (I saw this in the topic earlier, but I'm still sure they are)

That Sonics' plane was actually Tails', because it was never really explained, Sonic never drove it and he didn't have it before.

That if you let Robotnik escape in Sonic 1, Sonic 2 would then occur, and that if you didn't let him escape, Robotnik would die.

That Flying Battery Zone was a rebuilt Wing Fortress Zone due to the scenario and similar boss.

That Hydrocity was built by the same civilization who built Labrinth Zone (and that they were mysterious giant pigs and freaky looking chickens with beards)

That up until 2003, Sonic The Hedgehog as a franchise no longer existed, until I got Sonic Advance 2 for Christmas. (My last sighting of Sonic before that was Sonic Adventure in the Argos catalogue, back when I wanted a Dreamcast).

That Sonic's little animal mates built zones like Star Light Zone, even though they were cute little helpless animals.

That there was a golf course behind Emerald Hill Zone.

That the Metropolis boss really created mini clone Robotniks from eggs.

I wasn't that much younger, but I thought the line "determination of the strong" from All Hail Shadow meant determining who the strong were, not the strongs' determination.

  3. The barrel, just... the barrel.

I also used to think the "Ashura" glitch in Sonic 2 was an actual easter egg and was supposed to be Sonic's brother (not even Manic, just Sonic's brother)

On my butt in front of the computer. Where else?
I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
I think we all did back in the day when the words "palette glitch" meant nothing to us.

I believe I did at some point(s) too. The heart shape doesn't help now that I notice it! (Perhaps I did before too; I am not good with memory)

lol I did the exact same thing. But I can't really think of any thing at the moment though, But I do like how SAD2 has busty nude Egyptian babes without nips (as far as I know) in all the pyramid levels,a nd got away with it =P.

Technically, this isn't something I misinterpreted when I was younger but rather right now. >_> I just beat the master system version of Sonic 2 and the ending confuses me. I think I could only find one chaos emerald in the whole game so I got the bad ending. <_< + - Why the hell did I see Tails' face in the sky? Is it supposed to represent a consolation or something? o_O I guess that because of my lack emeralds, I couldn't reach the final zone and Tails remains captured. That sucks. >_>

    Yep, you did.

The Sonic 2 MS version is sad. I don't know if Tails gets totally lost or dies, but his face in the clouds gives me the impression Dr Robotnik kills him.

    What a bastard.

Considering how Dr. Robotnik + - saves Sonic in the first zone, that would be fucking weird as hell if he killed Tails. o_O With the way the scene was set up, the game acted like Tails died which is such a wtf moment for a Sonic game. For those who don't get to see the last zone, it would have been nice if the game at least had a better boss battle in the sixth zone. That Sonic robot was a joke. >_>

Of course, the good ending has both Sonic and Tails' faces in the clouds. Are we to assume they both die in the good ending? :v:

No wonder there was never a Sonic 3 for the Game Gear and Master System.

It would also explain how Eggman finally learnt how to build some dangerous machines.

Awesome thread! Here are my misinterpretations from old-school Sonic games:

    Sonic 1.
    - I had doubts whether Sonic was a boy or a girl. Sorry, but the pose he takes when you don't move him for a while didn't help things. It wasn't until Sonic's sprites were changed in Sonic 3 that the pose looked more manly.
    - I also thought the Roller badnik was a robotized version of Sonic.
    - I also thought that the chain holding the ball in the Green Hill boss was made out of rings and I tried to collect them. It didn't help that back then, I was playing on a black & white TV (yup, I'm that old), so I didn't know the rings were gold while the boss' chain was gray.

    Sonic CD
    - Since I never owned a SegaCD I only bought the PC version of the game. I used to think that was the original (the only) game music. It wasn't until I got the Sonic and Knuckles Collection for the PC and listened to the tracks for the Sonic Screensaver that I found out about the original music. I felt betrayed by SEGA back then!

    Sonic 2.
    - I used to think the Death Egg was the name of the final boss instead of the airship where the battle takes place.
    - I was devastated when I found out you get absolutely nothing when collecting all emeralds as Tails. At least in Sonic 3 you get 50 free rings for every Special Stage entrance you get after collecting the emeralds.
    - I thought sound track #10 was for a bad ending.

    Sonic 3.
    - I thought there was a bug the first time I beat the Angel Island boss and the animal prison came upside-down.
    - Interpreting Sonic's animation when you don't move him for a while. Was he implying "I'll kill you if you don't move it" or "I'll kill myself if you don't move it"?
    - Was I the only one who thought the game was broken when playing the Marble Garden boss as Tails? I was like, "I can't get Tails to spin instead of flying!" It wasn't until one time, playing as Sonic that I by accident opened the animal prison by touching it with Tails' helicopter blades that it hit me, that's how you are supposed to beat the boss as Tails.
    - I spent countless hours trying to get past the room with nothing but a barrel in Carnival Night 2. I also spent a lot of time trying to find alternate routes in order to avoid the fricking barrel, to no avail.
    - Somewhat related to the one above, I also spent a lot of time trying to get into the Knuckles-only paths. This was long before Sonic & Knuckles was released.
    - I used to think my cartridge was damaged as I experienced Tails' sudden death when sliding down near the beginning of IceCap 1. That is one nasty bug!
    - Since Knuckles was playable in 2-player mode, I thought there was some secret way to make him playable in 1-player mode. Again, this was long before Sonic & Knuckles was released.

    Sonic & Knuckles
    - At first, I thought that when playing as Knuckles, Sonic or Tails would be playing tricks on him as payback for Sonic 3.
    - I also thought the Sandopolis ghosts had a pointy nose. I didn't notice their left arm on the TV.

    Sonic 3D Blast
    - I thought there would be a way to unlock Tails and Knuckles as playable characters.

From Post-Genesis age, I've only played Sonic Advance 1 & 2, and a couple of releases for the PSP, but I couldn't really see that many details on those tiny screens to form myself some twisted ideas. :)

I thought that white crescent-moon-shaped marking on Knuckles' chest was the teeth in his lower jaw. O.o This came from looking at the in-game models of Knuckles in Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle though.

    Potential mispronunciations?

    - I pronounce ‘Labyrinth’ as Lah-bye-rinth. I'm still not sure what's the correct pronunciation.
    - For ‘Hydrocity’ I still say Hi-dross-city, rhyming with Velocity. My rationale is that if the developers wanted us to say Hydro City, they would've spelled it that way, or at least HydroCity like they did with IceCap (which I pronounce Ice Cap).
    - For 'Sandopolis' I say it rhyming with Metropolis.
    - Before I became fluent in English, I used to pronounce 'Chaos' (like in the Emeralds) as chow's. Even after learning the correct way to pronounce the word chaos, I still pronounce 'Chao' (the character) as chow. Chaotix? I say cha-oticks.
    - Also, before learning enough English, I used to pronounce Knuckles’ name as knockless (think necklace but with an o for the first vowel). I'm still not sure how to pronounce 'echidna' though – I just say eh-chid-nah.
    - As for Rouge, I pronounce it as the French word for red, as in the city Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Well if you're curious about pronunciation...

Labyrinth = la-bih-rinth (or even just lab-rinth depending on your tongue)
Hydrocity = Truth be told, we all argue about that.
Sandopolis = I say it the same way you do, and I think that's correct.
Chao (as in the little blue creatures) = chow
Chaos (as in the emeralds) = kay-os
    Chaotix = kay-ot-ix

Same, I was never able to put two and two together. A lot of people figured it out because of the past music, but I just interpreted it as the past being a completely different era - before Robotnik took over, that the background music was entirely different on purpose.

Also, on Sonic screensaver I had it set to only install a "best of" assortment of music, so I only got 4 SCD JP tracks - Palmtree Panic Present and Good Future, Tidal Tempest Present and Special Stage. I thought maybe it was Palmtree Panic Past, Tidal Tempest Past or Quartz Quadrant Past (the intro is very similar), and Metallic Madness Past, and that my memory was messed up. I think eventually I did some research, and upon installing Sonic Screensaver on a different PC (without realizing it) installed the entire soundtrack, that I learned the truth.
