  1. I own a Roland XV-3080, Roland D-550, E-MU Proteus 2000, E-MU Orbit 3, Edirol SD-80, Korg TR Rack, Roland SC-55, and Generalmusic Equinox 61. I'd say hardware is better. =P

However, I seem to be completely ignored here and in IRC so I just don't make any effort anymore to participate.

Yes Tweaker, the actual music level is indeed pretty high, but that must not stop people from proposing their tracks / refining them, fearing not be up to the standards! :)

So yes High Treason, propose us your S2 full-album for us to hear. ^^

Too many projects, current main priority is Duke 3D for DreamCast
OK, I managed to get all the good ones done, I can't get Sky Chase or Death Egg to sound good, so I won't upload those.

When you said about Uploading to the Database, I thought the terms said something else, and it won't let me log into that anyway, so I will use Mega Upload for now. Though I noticed a few tunes that I haven't recorded, I'll do those later.

Thes tracks use multiple synthesizers, so there isn't just the Yamaha, there's a Roland Sound Canvas and an EMU 8000 Series in some of them where it fit better.

    Aquatic Ruin Zone
Boss Fight (The best I can do with this one)
    Casino Night Zone
    Chemical Plant Zone
    Emerald Hill Zone
    Mystic Cave Zone
    Ending Sequence
    Oil Ocean
    Title Screen
    Winged Fortress
Metropolis Zone (I like this one)

    A few of these have been slightly moified from the older versions, such as Metropolis Zone, I felt the guitars were too heavy on the older version of that. The only ones where the modification is worth pointing out are;

    Metropolis Zone
    Chemical Plant Zone

But you might prefer the older ones, I don't know - that's why I put those up as well.

The others are very minor differences or corrected errors (I had some big problems with missing NoteOffs) that aren't worth mentioning.

Hey everyone, I just listened to the pretty rockin' Scuba Steve Remix of Chemical Plant zone. My only problem with it is that it almost seems like an exact MIDI replica with custom drums on it, the track also is in need of mastering BADLY. But other than that I really like the instrument translations and the all around groove and feel of it!!!

Hey I think ScubaSteves version of Chemical Plant is very cool, I think it goes along nicely with the HD transition, however I do have a few gripes about it and here they are: The entire track feels like an exact MIDI translation with different instruments albeit COOL instruments, if the original composer or SEGA wanted to press charges for distribution it would be very possible, Sound Recording copyrights are a very tricky thing which is what worries me about this track (this is why OCRemix can't host files with samples and exact MIDI replications). Also, this is BADLY in need of mastering, granted, I'm sure this will all be taken care of in the long run.

I've posted a remaster of Emerald Hill Zone at http://www.mediafire.com/?0yzmymijwyz

    It's a 320 kb/s OGG in a RAR.

Just my two cents, but shouldn't this be in the music discussion topic?

  8. @siditious:
If the artist is capable of perfectly reproducing a piece of music, as long as it is original work (without editing, digitally copying or manipulating the original) to my understanding it is legal. When I say original, I mean the artist must start from scratch. OK there are trademark issues with using other people's characters, so this project will require co-operation with SEGA in order to sell it, but I thought this project was for free, not profit, so that doesn't apply. Samples wise, if you copy a drum beat or sound bite from commercial music and use it as your own -to make profit- it is illegal; this project is unaffected because it is a free fan game, and comes under the fair use act under copyright law. The only thing SEGA could do is sue for damages to their intellectual property, but they have been damaging their "Sonic The Hedgehog" brand ever since the day they stopped supporting Mega Drive/Genesis in my opinion :)

  9. And here I was thinking OCRemix was just comprised of shit who must mangle every song that reaches them.

Could people please not use Megaupload for files? The new catchpa system is awful to use and there are alternatives with better/no waiting times, like Mediafire.

Also personally even I think that track is leading too far on the side of a remix. It doesn't sound suitable for use in-game.

Well, I'm not a big fan of the styles of these remixes, but my main issue is that they really wouldn't work in-game. They might be fine on their own accord, but I just think they wouldn't be appropriate as background music to a Sonic game.
Eh? It's mastered, I promise... The only problems I had with the version I posted (which I've already fixed... small update soon) were that the bass was too loud and sort of muddy and the lead got louder in a couple spots because of the chorus effect.
I listened to the original again (here if you don't have it), and as far as I can tell there aren't any pitchbends missing...
Barring some mixing issues it sounds like a good start. Specifically, the percussion is too loud (the snare is way too loud), and the second horn part that comes in at the first repeat of the melody is practically inaudible... also, it sounds like the reverb might be a little thick on the horns.

@HighTreason: That's a lot of tracks! I'll have to listen to all those later tonight...

    Cheers for ya comment Scubasteve.

I think we need a bit more collaboration with the music at the moment to get things a bit more stream lined. What I mean is sharing samples, presets or making SF2 files for all of us to use so we can all head in the right direction. The percussion tends to be very generic through each track and I think this is probably the most important part, mainly due to the credits using sections of different zones and when each track has a different overall sound this can contribute to alienating people who are fans of the original score, which we don't want to do. It's like what I've done with the boss theme. I did it like that to make it sound more dramatic as I feel orchestral music is the best at doing that. I'm scraping work on it though as it won't match the work that has been done already.

Also I've had an idea to get around the speed issue if we somehow use SF2 files. This allows people to use there hardsynths, VST or real instuments within reason. There might be some issues with some long FX samples but if the FX sample was chopped up into segments this might get over the whole problem with the speed. I have no idea how to program something like this as this is well out of my leauge and not only that it's a whole new program aswell so it might not be worth it. It's alot of work just for the benefit of the speed.

I've been tossing ideas around in my head for a while as to how we could do this. The problem with samples/SF2s is that since just about all of us use generic file uploading sites, sharing them would get really messy and there would be no way for us to keep an organized collection... and with sharing presets, the fact that virtually every DAW has its own unique synths/devices would limit their usefulness. I suppose that we could share patches for freeware/commercial plugins, but again, not everyone would have them. So it's kind of a tricky situation.

Still, I definitely agree that we need more collaboration, because lately we've been getting TONS of submissions from everyone and I think we could really boost the overall quality by having everyone working together to some degree. Perhaps we could simply start with some 1-on-1 collabs? (I would definitely be up for that ;)) That way, even if two people don't have the same software they could share the raw audio files without having to worry about keeping it organized for everyone.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts spilling onto the keyboard :psyduck:
Well, I would think that the percussion was so generic largely because of technical restraints (keep in mind that there isn't a single cymbal to be found in the entire soundtrack), and since we're modernizing the tracks I don't think it makes sense to limit ourselves that way.
    :argh:

That's unfortunate you feel that way, is there any particular reason why? I actually designed the track with it the idea of it being implemented directly into a full scale Sonic remake exactly like this community is working on, my idea with the heavy techno vibe is this: Sonic is fast! compare the music of the Sonic games to music of games at a similar time, it was energetic and catchy. Sega didn't pay top dollar just to have people write bland monotonous songs as their campaign image, they wanted something adrenaline pumping, which is in my honest opinion what has made these classic game soundtracks so successful.

My one question has always been this: What could the artists been capable of if they had mp3 technology for their games? I think modern Sonic Team productions clearly show that they would be much more 'remixed' as you put it, and exciting. Take Shadow the Hedgehog's Deathmetal soundtrack, or recent Sega Team collaborations with artists like Akon in the recent PS3 Sonic the Hedgehog.

That's why I attempted a Bennassi style approach to Metropolis Zone, because let's face it, when you talk of hard hitting house music, Bennassi's name is sure to get dropped. I personally think this style of music in game would actually add to the replay value of the final product than simply making exact copies of songs people have heard for the last fifteen years.

My idea with the Emerald Island remix is this, Sonic always starts off in rain forest utopia, with a huge beach on the horizon. To me, these images of life on the beach, I could only imagine replicated in music by form of reggae. But since as you say, a reggae track might not be appropriate in a fast paced game, the closest thing would be to do a Dub or Reggaeton remix. I listened to a lot of Paranormal Attack before being able to compose this jammin track man.

and by the way Scuba Steve, I in no way was trying to harsh on your mix, I'm just saying there is a reason people can make million dollar careers out of mastering records, and spend a lifetime in learning the art. That is all. As I said before I can really appreciate the vibe in your mixes! They are very true to the originals.

    Scubasteve.

I'm going to do some presets so the option is there anyway. See how it goes. If it doesn't work it won't be a complete loss. What VST's do you use? I'll be using Sytrus as my main synth. Also I'm not a music specialist so I'll leave the mastering for someone else.
