Doesn't Sonic & Knuckles' casino bonus stage engine consist almost entirely of reused code from Sonic 1 (rotation) and 2 (slot machine)? Seems like some redundancy there that could result in even further size reduction, though I don't know to what extent.

Ah, so you mean to maintain consistency in the method of entry. I approached that comment as though you were suggesting it as a way to reduce space.

Now I'm wondering which method I would prefer! While hunting for giant rings can be OK, I almost enjoyed having to collect 50 rings to enter the first two games' special stages—and it gave a purpose to collecting rings, at least beyond the one needed for defense against badniks, which don't pose much of a challenge anyway.

Do eet! I've never seen any of your hacks. I figured you'd have some, as you seem to know a fair bit about the games' internals.

Unfortunately, perfectionism. They keep breaking on me, and I want to make sure that they don't break on anyone else, even if it means that nobody else gets them.

It's funny, I was thinking about trying to do something like this for fun not long ago. And now here it is, and I didn't lift a finger! I wonder if I can wish anything else into existence.

I played through this on netplay with footbigmike on Monday. Great stuff, didn't notice any particular problems other than a couple of oddities that have already been mentioned. For me, apart from anything else, it's just nice to have a bit longer to get all the emeralds, because I've never been that great at collecting (and keeping) sufficient rings enough times in the first two games, nor at actually getting through the S2 special stages (partly due to playing too often as Sonic and Tails without a second player, I now realise.) The palette changes are really nicely done, barely noticable at all, and I'm sure they would entirely pass by someone who wasn't especially familiar with the original - they fit right in. Tails' underwater Labyrinth palette is the one possible exception due to the shading.

We were amused by the ability of a 2P Tails to smash up Robotnik badly before he even starts moving in Labyrinth. Then it's a game of follow-the-explosions.

As you suggested, I've no doubt you'll be inundated with feature requests. For my part, my wish would be that - like most hacks I play with a save feature - it allowed for separate game files in the manner of Sonic 3. Previously suggested Sonic 3-ish engine upgrades, along with Knuckles, would also be lovely, such that it could almost serve as a singular replacement for the S1 character hacks. Nevertheless, I appreciate your logic in keeping this more true to the original games, and it's certainly good enough in its own right.

All of these things would be presumably resolved by the suggested Sonic 1 and 2 and 3 and Knuckles and Knuckles, and if anyone here decides to go down that route and gets somewhere, I'd be more than happy to contribute whatever bits of S3 Complete they might like to try and fit in. :)

Looks like I'm going to have to arrange a meetup with ColinC10 and MarkeyJester sometime.

Also, ColinC10, MarkeyJester and Cinossu - proving that the best Sonic hackers are, indeed, British.

I couldn't help but notice that in some parts of the game that the colors were a little messed up. :specialed:

I assume I'm correct in assuming Arena Mode is endless and you never get past S rank. Is my assumption correct?

Seems to be that way. I haven't got to the end, and I've played about 15 levels on S rank.

    This hack is just awesome.

I'm not one for jumping on the bandwagon but S1,2, 3&K would be awesome ... and would that leave possibilities for cutscenes between every level (even s1 & s2) :specialed: because that would make me cry with joy.

But regardless, this hack is just incredible and I absolutely love what you've done with it.

Ehhhhhh, the only cutscenes you need is the transition between games and how Sonic met Tails.

What? No, I think Elektro-Omega was referring to the level transitions, such as jumping onto the Flying Battery at the end of MHZ.

I always thought it would be cool if Scrap Brain acted as a Launch Base of sorts for Sonic 2s Death Egg.

Oh, great, I knew this would come up. Then they'll suggest S1&2 Dimps edition too!

Are you sure Big Brother came from Britain? I've heard Dutch. So that's why I've though that the London mascots would be a perfect fit for a Sonic game?

Don't be silly. Before that we need Amy in Sonic 1 and 2, Sonic 1 and 2: The One Ring, Sonic 1 and 2 Retro Remix, and Sonic 1 and 2: The Challenges.

I don't see how the transitions would work on Sonic 1 and 2. Maybe Spring Yard to Star Light and a few others like Metropolis to Sky Chase.

    Working on my art!
    Idea for a god hack.

Sonic 1 - Sonic 3 & Knuckles, ported to the Sega CD, playable Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. Game also has a boss rush mode and a challenge mode similar to that of S3K The Challenges. This way space wouldn't (maybe?) be an issue and you could have all that glorious shit in one convenient/godly package.

    Then you have two options:

    1. Leave them without cutscenes, to keep Sonic 1 and 2 as close to their original form as possible.

    2. Make cutscenes, to give the entire thing some consistency.

I know which one takes less effort, but it's not the one I'd rather see.

    EDIT:

Space is still just as much of an issue, plus you'd also have to wait a lot longer for loading between levels, thus breaking up the flow that S3K goes out of its way to create.
