  1. I'm frustrated that Jim beat me to this. I had started on all of this on Friday night, got to the point where I could recompile it and it'd play just fine, but hadn't messed with the values. Then my girlfriend came into town the next day. This is my first time looking through the thread, but I'm going to be having fun with the 360 version. :3

Has nobody still tried enabling the homing attack flag in Classic Sonic's data?

If only to see if he triggers those animations other people have glitched into the demo.

There's that. I just have a friend or two that like to insist Classic Sonic isn't necessary in the case that you can have Modern Sonic play just like him. It's true, technically, but it just feels nicer to play as the Oshima Sonic in the case of a classic Genesis-style game. Not necessary, but why wouldn't you design it with that look in the first place?

The only other thing I'd change besides the slide-to-spindash is replacing the homing attack with the Insta-Shield. I'm not a fan of having SEGA/DIMPs design levels to accommodate the homing attack, if Sonic 4 is any indication, as opposed to either having Tweaker and company design it a la Megamix or have SEGA design levels without it in 2D.

The problem is that homing attack is useful in 3D (aiming in three dimensions is much harder than aiming in two dimensions), but it's outright overkill in 2D.

Frankly I still think it's a lazy solution that doesn't age well at all. It takes no skill to use and isn't really that fun. It might "work", but this isn't a car you need to get from point A to point B. It's a game. Games should be a little more fun and engaging, and if the idea of the homing attack is as an absolute solution to hitting things in 3D, where its only real engagement being some fast-twitch reflex-pressing-of-the-A-button-twice, then it's nothing but a solution that begs to be superseded either by a new design paradigm, a new "kind" of homing attack, or both.

I agree with MegaDash. The HA was acceptable back in the Adventure days, but it's getting increasingly stale, and now they're trying to shoehorn it into 2D, where it is just plain broken unless it is outright crippled into uselessness (like in the Rushes).

I mean, jeez, there's a much more versatile method that's been tried and true across many games, and it was pioneered in Ocarina of Time more than a decade ago - it's called Z-Targeting. Helps with aiming greatly with jumping and the spin-dash (which basically means the spin-dash becomes useful again), but at the same time, it also allows for an element of skill because you can still miss, or the enemy can dodge (if it can).

That's some insane travel time on the bubble shield.

Yeah that bubble shield is floaty, but we've yet to see where it's placed in-game. If it can only be gotten underwater it might not be so bad.
I for one am just glad the shields are back.

I don't even care that the bubble shield has more air time than usual, damn good enough for me.

Thanks for showing this Jim. Brought a smile to my face to see them back.

Settling for mediocrity is the reason everything is so shitty these days.

    Working on my art!
So they took these things out of the series after Sonic 3... WHY?

Oh and is there anyway to activate Super Sonic?

Well who's to say it's floatyness is mediocre? or if it fits the levels it's in? It is a bubble after all, it would be floaty. Wait, is there even a water level? There's Chemical Plant, and I guess there might be water in Seaside hill, but dammit, the water level is a + - n unwelcome   staple of platforming games.

The problem with that is it's a minor difference from the original. It's not mediocre, as Mr. Mash said. It's just different, and I'm okay with that. :)

Excellent work, man. It's nice to see them again.

Not sure what to think of the Bubble shield until I see it in action where it belongs. It looks about the same as it did in Sonic 3, differences between that game and Generations withstanding.

Really great to see the Electric Shield. That's got to be my favorite. Double jump looks way better than in Sonic Colors.

The Fire shield looks like a one-tap boost, especially with the radial air-distortion effect that goes with it. From that demonstration it looks like it doesn't get as much horizontal thrust as the original did, or as much of a visible fire-dash animation.

    How did they feel, Jim?

What you and most of this game's detractors really mean is, settling for anything that's not 100% like Sonic 3 is the reason everything is so shitty these days.

I wish people would stop expecting them to make a game exactly like the classics. NSMB and NSMB: Wii were not exactly like the old Mario games but the fans were happy. Why the fuck can people not just shut up and accept what's given to them and find some enjoyment in it anyway? This still doesn't look bad and I honestly can't see why anyone's complaining besides "WAAHH IT'S NOT THE SAAAAAAAAME".

Sega are never going to make a game that feels 100% like the classic games because guess what? They're outdated. Yes, fucking excellent and extremely playable, but outdated. Developers can do so much better these days so give them a chance, jeeze.

God this is beyond fucking amazing. Look how much Classic Sonic in the modern level looks like the Sonic 2 commercial

Even if they don't get every little detail right, they got so much right that the PC version of this game is going to be best thing to happen to this community in years.

On my butt in front of the computer. Where else?
I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
Bubble shield gets more air time. Somehow, this is a bad thing? Whatever, man.

EDIT: The floatiness of the bubble shield isn't exactly a hard thing to grasp, a bubble is, by its very nature, extremely floaty. If anything, in the context of this, it serves to give the bubble a different function from the double jump, which it would be sorely lacking without old-school badnik bounce.

tl;dr - It's floaty on purpose, not because the developers fail at life.

  20. Good to see the shields back in action, puts a smile on my face.

The bubble shield getting bigger airtime is hardly anything to complain about, despite being noticeable. The functionality is basically exactly the same, which is what's important in this respect.
