I was playing recently the Sonic Galactic DEMO, and I had way more fun than even with Sonic Mania back when it got released. That got me thinking - what are other good, great, awesome, outstanding, amazing, Sonic fan games out there? I admit, that other than very few popular titles like Sonic Robo Blast 2 and Sonic before/after the sequel, Freedom Planet, I didn’t really play that many of them. Some of them I wanted to check out, but the projects were sadly, abandoned by the creators, or faced other problems - I believe such was the case with Sonic Freedom? And I was really looking forward to that one… Of course, I know about SAGE, who doesn’t - but I would love to hear from you, about your favorite titles. Both old and new, what are the definitive, greatest Sonic Fan games? Maybe there are some hidden gems?
Quite honestly there aren't many. The reason is that only a few get completed or far enough. There has been plenty of great fangames with 1-3 zones, but I personally end up forgetting them. Personally, the best one has always been Sonic Robo Blast 2. I loved Sonic Time Attacked back in the day too, but it hasn't aged as good as the classic games. I still have to play Before/After the Sequel, Time Twisted, etc. Honestly when I wan't to play a Sonic game I end up playing the original ones, or trying some hack. I know you haven't asked about hacks, but Sonic VR feels different and it's a great short hack to try.

Off the top of my head here are some other must play fan games: Sonic Triple Trouble 16 bit Sonic GT Sonic Time Twisted Sonic and the Fallen Stars
Sonic Megamix remains the gold standard for Sonic fangames IMO. My favorite version is the first sega CD release. It's super old but Sonic Mettrix was also great back in the day. Retro Sonic on the Dreamcast is still super cool.
