Sonic the Fighters is a competent fighting game, but nothing exceptional. This is to be expected- it's basically a Fighting Vipers mod.

    The soundtrack, though...

It's phenomenal. I can't really describe the quality it has- it's similar to the music in the Genesis games, but with a faster-paced, techno-esque quality.

And, of course, it's not restricted by the Genesis.

Take a listen. OSV project is fun.

    And, my personal favorite:

Of course, there's more on the OSV's wiki page.

I've loved this one forever, want to hear it in a hack (if decently converted to SMPS). OST version with it's eerie halftime middle-eight is way better, though.

I always thought that Fighters had the most unique soundtrack of any Sonic game I've ever heard. The synths are intentionally very poppy, upbeat, and juvenile; the melodies are very heavy on vibrato and had a playful, enchanting charm, keeping a happy-go-lucky pace that almost felt like it came out of a children's saturday morning cartoon. It was extremely surreal, but that was what was good about it—it felt like Sonic, albeit in a very different way than the normal approach.

But yes—Fighters had a great soundtrack. I remember when Stephen used to send me edits he'd made of the music back in 2004 over MSN. Good times! :)

    MIDI-to-SMPS-conversions, mostly. Takin' requests, too.
The soundtrack really is awesome. I always have trouble deciding on favorites here. One of the best there is. : D

  5. I'm going to be honest and say that I never heard this soundtrack until now. It's actually pretty good and I'm going to continue hearing the rest.

My personal favorite is Blue Garden, because it's so energetic and groovy. I feel like this song would totally fit right in as the music for one of those "green zones" in a Sonic game.

I've always loved the STF music. I always thought it was sort of wasted on an obscure fighting game, since it would be totally appropriate for a side-scroller. (On that note, I feel similarly about the soundtrack to Mean Bean Machine). Canyon Cruise is one of my favourites, it oozes with the happy spirit that runs through much of Dreams Come True's music. Like Blue Emerald says, it's just screaming to be a green zone.

The trouble with the soundtrack though is the liberal and sophisticated use of pitch bending which makes the construction of serviceable midis difficult. Thus ROM hacks usually don't borrow much from it.

On a related note, I don't think ROM hackers should feel uncreative when borrowing obscure tracks from older Sonic games, since SEGA themselves thinks nothing of rehashing Green Hill on occasion, or even revisiting themes from Sonic 3D Blast. As long as there is not a heavy reliance on pre-existing music (as with Dark Brotherhood's perverse fascination with constructing an entire game score from Diamond Dust zone), it can be a good thing.

I can't agree more, it would fit a "green zone" but maybe not the first zone in a game. (It never did Sonic SMS any harm haveing Green Hills half-way through the game, did it?) This one has been my favourite for some time now.

I am still fond of the character select screen music but still haven't found the gems collection version of it... :(
IIRC it was called 'get into the wave' by maki maki

  10. I'll admit I've barely played Sonic the Fighters. But this soundtrack is popping. I would not be angry if Sega did Sonic the Hedgehog 4 on XBLA and used these songs and pretended like they weren't stolen from Sonic the Fighters.

woah, the songs on the osv page sound like they were recorded off a bad emulator or something...

anyway, Metal Sonic's fight song... uh
Never Let It Go (Death Egg's Eye)

That song is awesome. I've always kinda considered it Metal Sonic's defacto theme song.. y'know?

I love the soundtrack. When I first played this in Gems Collection, I had no idea what to expect. All I had known about Fighters was through screenshots on CulT and other sites. So this was completely different than what I thought I would hear. Very poppish, slightly techno almost, it feels very Japanese for some reason. Of course I'm not saying that's a bad thing, it's just different. But this is a very good kind of different.

And I'll tell you what, Everything is probably the best Super Sonic theme ever.

I went ahead and downloaded Sunset Town just over an hour ago, and then I come here and find that a topic for this sort of thing was created only three days ago. Just further proof that the world revolves around me.

Also, Dynamite Plant and Casino Night forever.

Ever since I found the OST years ago I've been fond of "Never Let It Go (Death Egg's Eye)" most of all, probably my second favorite Sonic song next to Bridge Zone.
