The Outrun styled special stages is probably the best idea I've come across. If anything, it sounds like a 16-bit version of Sonic Unleashed. Think about it... On the note of turning the car into Sonic, it kinda reminded me of this video; "What happens to the Hedgehog?" Off topic I know, but I thought I'd share it with you all (Even if most of the community have pretty much seen all Sonic related vids...) Anyway, back on topic, the Outrun style special stages are the way forward methinks. Everyone's stated the theme similarities between Sonic and Outrun, so I needn't explain why I feel it would be fuckawesome to have this style of special stage. Although I will say it breaks from the mould of typical special stage ideas, yet fits in nicely (Seeing as Sonic 2's special stage was like a bit of a race...). And whilst I think about it, the mention of Outrun's soundtrack was made in a previous post. Maybe the music to the special stage could be somewhat similar to that of Outrun's soundtrack. Any thoughts on that?
I REALLY like that Outrun to Sonic idea for the special stage, it even feels like something SEGA would do, to be honest.
This song always makes me imagine Sonic racing the guy from Outrun, so I approve of this idea. E: I'm guessing there's going to be an emerald at each of the final stages, correct?
Why don't we have all the songs from OutRun in the special stages, but done in a more Sonic-y style? For example, Magical Sound Shower for the first two, then Passing Breeze, then Step On Beat, and then a different song for the last special stage? Speaking of the last special stage... why not, say make it a race? You could, say, be racing Metal Sonic, for example. On another note, are the special stages going to be enter-able per act or per zone? If we made it so that each zone had a specific special stage with an emerald in it, we could make each special stage have it's own theme.
I thought there was going to be a race between Sonic and a previous version of Metal Sonic for each one.

Fuck Metal Sonic. We shouldn't give him too fucking much space in the game, it will feel unprofessional, it will feel too much like a retarded fangame, no Metal Sonic at the Special Stage pee-lee-ase.
You could probably steal a few ideas from Space Harrier as well. but yeah, Outrun special stage sounds sexcellent of course you could also change all the cars into Sonic characters... I mean there's that many!
Just a reminder there, ace: You are making a fangame. Or should I say, talking about making a fangame. Somebody do something already. Outrun is, in my opinion, your best idea and by gauging the response in this thread, it's also the most popular. Great, now somebody do it.
Basically this. I don't know why anyone here thinks we're not making a fan game—we are. Any Sonic game that is fan-made and not official is... a fan game. Pretty simple concept. And for the record, hacks are fan games, too. We're not somehow special or "exempt" to that concept—this is a fan game. We should try and make it stand above the rest, certainly, but we're not getting out of being called a fan game—that wouldn't make sense and would be incredibly pretentious.
