Does anyone have any interest in a listing that tells what each sound is/does? There are plenty of listings for music tracks, including here on Retro. But I there isn't anything for SFX and I can see why... it'd be a daunting task, and probably not everyone would feel that much of a need to have it. BUT I do... and I am willing to take on the task. If anyone really has any interest in having access to such list, I can/will document it in the wiki somewhere. Sonic 1 List - (COMPLETE) Sonic 2 List - (90-95% Complete) Sonic 3K List - In Progress... this one will take a little longer. I did find a topic for S3K sound listings from 3 years ago: Oldbie: Dracula's topic
All I can remember is that the bomb explosion sound in Sonic 1 and 2 is C4. Is it an easter egg/joke or just a coincidence? You decide.
Surely coincidence... cmon now! I did get a laugh outta that after you mentioned it though. Sonic3K didn't keep the trend though, C4 for S3K is one of the sounds that the game loops continuously in some instances. Anyway, I'm working on IDing the sfx for the main games, and will put a list somewhere on the wiki if others would find any value in it (Particularly fangamers... myself included) As I said, I've got an S3K list from the aforementioned thread. though its far from complete. Anyone, you included, who has anymore helpful info (Or humor), lemme know.
I think I tried writing a list for Sonic 1 when I was a kid. Needless to say I didn't get very far into it.
I think I just made your childhood aspirations a reality... Did some digging into the disassembly... Not sure why I didn't just look there before asking this... but I still don't know a lot about hacking, and all this stuff, and still trying to learn. So it didn't cross my mind at the time. Got a nearly complete list of Sonic 1's Sound effects. I'm sure with digging further into the disassembly I can figure out what the last few go to. I hope this will be useful to some people. I'll post S2 and S3K later on also... perhaps we can get a complete Sound Test listing documented for reference? I've bolded the sound effects that I believe are unused. I've actually scrambled through the asm to look for where each one of them is used, and have found nothing on the bolded sfx. Anyway here goes. A0 - Jump A1 - Lamppost A2 - Unused A3 - Hurt A4 - Skid A5 - Unused A6 - Spike A7 - Push A8 - SS Goal A9 - SS Blip (Reverse, Fast/Slow etc.) AA - Splash AB - Unused AC - Hit Boss AD - Air Bubble Get AE - Fireball (Not sure exactly what zone, Presumably MZ or SLZ) AF - Shield Get B0 - SBZ Saw B1 - SBZ Electric B2 - Drown B3 - SBZ Flamethrower B4 - Bumper B5 - Ring B6 - Spikes Move B7 - LZ Rumbling B8 - Unused B9 - Crumbling Cliff/Blocks BA - SS Disappearing Blocks BB - LZ Flapping Door BC - SBZ Teleport (Would later be used as the spin dash release sound) BD - MZ Chain Stomp BE - Spin BF - Continue Jingle C0 - Basaran (MZ Bat) SFX C1 - Monitor/Badnik destroy C2 - Underwater warning chime C3 - Giant Ring get C4 - Bomb/Boss explodes C5 - Score Tally total - that cash register sound... C6 - Ring Loss C7 - MZ Chain Rising C8 - Listed as "Burning". (Used for the MZ lava geysers) C9 - Hidden Pts. Flag CA - Enter SS... that sound used in all the classic games (and in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World ) CB - Smashing through the wall CC - Spring CD - Switch hit (Also used when the score is tallying up.) CE - Ring (Left) CF - Signpost ---NOT in sound test--- D0 - Waterfall sfx E0 - Fade out E1 - SEGA Sound E2 - Speed up E3 - Slow down E4 - Stop sfx and music If people find this useful, I'll do something to document the entirety of the Sound Test listing in the wiki... and I'm working on S2 and S3K as we speak anyway. (It's no trouble, I need to find this out anyway...)
Because the original Ring sound effect ID B5 calls the stereo subroutine to play the sound with either a left panning or right panning each time this sound effect is played. CE, however, only plays with a left panning (the sound comes only through the left speaker), and that's why it is commented as "Ring Left."
Appropriate that this caught your attention Mr. Lange. I have the sound rips you uploaded. They are proving to be useful for this purpose... and I recommend your rip archive to anyone who hasnt downloaded it yet. Couple it with this list, and you'll know what each sound is.
A2 - Sounds like the spikes that pop out in Marble Zone A5 - Sounds like moving a stone block...like in Sandopolis in Sonic 3. B8 - Sounds like more spike pop-ups. A2 & B8 probably the same? Maybe they were alternative mixes for different conditions inside/outside?
Here's a start on Sonic 2's SFX listing. Interestingly enough, as if everything else discovered wasn't proof enough that Sonic 2 was built directly off of Sonic 1... I've noticed that a vast majority of the SFX are simply recycled from Sonic 1, even in the exact same spot on the listing... (Some of which aren't used and are just there.) Just like the Sonic 1 list, this is NOT complete... I'd say its fairly close to complete though... Please make any notes of mistakes or omissions I may have made. Here goes: ALSO: You may find, by looking in the (SVN) disassembly, that the ID # given to the sfx, and music for that matter..., may differ from the ID # given in the sound test. I am numbering everything based on Sound test ID #s. 20 - Jump 21 - Lamppost 22 - Labeled as "Spike Switch" (Carried over from Sonic 1 (A2)) Used by Silver Sonic object. 23 - Hurt 24 - Skid 25 - Push 26 - Spike 27 - Title Screen Sparkle sound 28 - DEZ Final Boss Lock-on Beep 29 - Labeled as "Bwoop" (Higher pitch version of Sonic 1's SS Blip sound.) Unsure of the usage. 2A - Splash 2B - Labeled as "Swish", (Carried over from Sonic 1 (AB)) Unsure of the usage. 2C - Hit Boss 2D - Air Bubble Get 2E - ARZ Arrow Firing Trap SFX & HTZ Boss Fireball. 2F - Shield Get 30 - Labeled as Laser Beam. Carried over from Sonic 1's SBZ Saw sfx. Unsure of the usage. 31 - Labeled as Laser Beam. Carried over from Sonic 1's SBZ Electric sfx. Unsure of the usage. 32 - Drowning 33 - HTZ Boss FireBurn (Recycled from SBZ Flamethrower) 34 - Bumper 35 - Ring 36 - Spikes Move 37 - DEZ Eggrobo Rumbling (Listed in the disassembly as being loaded with this object, but it sounds different in-game. Sfx is recycled from Sonic 1's LZ Rumbling) 38 - ??? Recycled from (S1_B8) 39 - Crumbling Cliff/Blocks 3A - UNUSED - Carried over from Sonic 1's SS Disappearing Blocks sfx 3B - MCZ Bridge (Obj. 77) sfx. Carried over from LZ Flapping Door sfx. 3C - The sound when releasing the Spin Dash. Sonic 1's beta teleport sound... 3D - ARZ Boss Hammer Thump. Recycled from S1's MZ Chain Stomp sfx. CE - Spin CF - Continue Jingle 40 - CNZ Casino Slot SFX 41 - Monitor/Badnik destroy 42 - Underwater warning chime 43 - Giant Ring get (Unused, carried over from Sonic 1) 44 - Boss explodes 45 - Score Tally total - that cash register sound... 46 - Ring Loss 47 - MZ Chain Rising (Unused, carried over from Sonic 1) 48 - Listed as "Flamethrower". (Formerly used in Sonic 1 for the MZ lava geysers) 49 - Hidden Pts. Flag (Unused, carried over from Sonic 1) 4A - Enter SS 4B - Labeled as Slow Smash (Used for ARZ Rising Pillar, WFZ Plating & SS Bombs) (Formerly S1's Wall Smashing sfx) 4C - Spring 4D - Switch Blip (Also used for Menu movement, Score tally counting, and MCZ vine grabbing.) 4E - Ring (Left) 4F - Signpost ----- After this, we don't see as much recycled sfx, and we will see more new sounds. 50 - CNZ Boss Zap 51 - ??? 52 - ??? 53 - Signpost (2P) 54 - OOZ Lip Pop 55 - OOZ Sliding Spike 56 - CNZ Elevator 57 - MCZ Swinging Platform Knock (For some reason, the sound is also located in the ARZ Swinging Platform, though I don't know why...) 58 - CNZ Bonus Pts. Bumper 59 - CNZ Large Triangle Bumper 5A - CPZ Blue Gloop Tube... Listed as "Gloop" 5B - ARZ Pre-Arrow Firing (Interesting side note: It might/Might not be a bug... this sound plays instead of Sound 2E on some instances of the ARZ arrow shooter.) 5C - Listed as "Fire". It is the sound playing when Silver Sonic descends from the top of the room. 5D - ARZ Boss Arrow Sticking to Pillar 5E - EHZ Boss Helicopter/WFZ Propellor 5F - Transformation 60 - Spindash Rev 61 - Listed as "Rumbling2" - Hilltop Zone Earthquake Rumbling 62 - CNZ Spring Launcher 63 - CNZ Pinball Flipper 64 - HTZ Ski Lift Clicking Noise 65 - ARZ Leaves Ruffled 66 - CPZ Boss Drop Chemicals 67 - MCZ Drawbridge Move 68 - Listed as "QuickDoor Slam", though I am not sure of what it does 69 - MCZ Drawbridge Down 6A - OOZ Boss Laser Burst 6B - OOZ Boss Laser Floor 6C - Teleport Item Box 6D - Error 6E - Silver Sonic Buzz 6F - WFZ Large Laser 70 - OOZ Oil Slides Some other notes based on YOUR feedback: It could be. I'll look into that when I return home and if it turns out to be so... I'll stick it in the list. A5 does sound a lot like the push Sound, and is identical to the push sound in Sonic 2... though I marked the one that was labeled as Push... as Push. I'll look into this further. A2 and B8 share similarities... to each other, AND other sounds. Again I'll look further into this when I return home today.
Wouldn't it be easier to just look for the "play sound #" commands in the disassembly than just guessing? By the way, the Sonic 1 Special Stage sounds might be used in the partially overwritten Sonic 1 Special Stage that's still present in the prototype.
That's actually what I'm trying to do. Combined with playing through the game to try and see exactly where they are used. The only issue is that ASM isn't my strongest suit. As I pointed out, I'm still learning. If you or anyone else who knows more about ASM spots any mistakes, please let me know so I can fix it, also point out where I can find it. While I AM trying to contribute, I'd also like to get something out of this as well, and maybe learn a thing or two... On the note of overwritten sounds, a vast majority of the sounds up to a certain point on the list that I marked, are mere recycles from Sonic 1. Many of which are in the exact same spot in the listing order... It's pretty much just the same list, with some additions.
Hmm, this info should be posted somewhere on the wiki, definitely. No, they're definitely different. B8 is a bit lower pitched.
Would AB for Sonic 1 be the Green Hill Zone waterfall sound? Thats the only one that I can can think of thats missing from the list.
Isn't the sound effect for the waterfalls a special item or not listed at all in the sound test? Or am I thinking of something else? :v: I haven't hacked Sonic 1 in a while. :\
