I just got this in the mail today. So I scanned what I could find (sorry about the quality of some images, they were like this in the mag.

Red UFOs, as seen in two other screens.

  2. Why do I feel weird saying that the red UFOs are new to me?

So at one point the GHZ ball was programmed in and functional? =O

They had a cool and efficient method for screenshots: get a camera, pause game, take picture. :P
(as shown by the deformation on the corners of the first screen)

    Ooh. Red UFO's.

I think this gives some good evidence that

    (1) The "RING" display was in a late beta, along with
    (2) The UFO's, and
    (3) The GHZ ball.

This is evident because of Sonic's palette not being so bright. I think that the Press Start Button shouldn't need mention.

You know, I've never seen any other shots with red UFOs in MZ. Also of note, the ruins in the same shot are almost the same shade of green as the grass, rather than really pale like the final.

Also, this has got to be the worst quality I've seen from an old magazine. Ever. XD

  7. Well, I'm not too familiar with capture cards. Did they have them back then, or did they simply have to take a conventional picture of the TV as it was being played?

Sonic the Ball Pusher...they were so going to go there.

Now I wonder, how many more unscanned screens are still out there?

I also have with me a higher resolution scan of one of the Sparkling zone images from the Apr/May 1991 Sega visions issue (Yes, I know this was scanned already)

I'll be scanning the other images in high quality and posting them either tonight or tomorrow.

That shot's definitly not a fully real shot- the roller dude's blues are different from sonic's.

It's using shades of purple, not blue. It's the same purple used in the platform above.

It's not supposed to be using Sonic's blues (and reds), It's using the purples (and yellows) from the SYZ palette. (it's using palette line 1 instead of 0, see atachment.)

    Edit: Damn you Tweaker!

Wait, wait, wait. Sonic *pushes* the GHZ ball? Such a difficult concept for me to wrap my head around. I always figured it was something that you rode, or it pushed you backward. Was the true function of tha ball ever uncovered? Sorry, I've been out of the loop for a while.

My theory is that it was to roll over enemies and to be used as a platform to get to hard-to-reach spaces (like the tops of the loop-de-loops). Of course, that's just a theory based on practical purposes rather than genuine knowledge of the creators' plans.

The ball could have been meant as a "wallbuster" instead of using the rolling spin attack.

I doubt anyone would use mockups during the late stages of development -- especially when the magazine has plenty of pictures to go around. Mockups are used to show off the game in a much more developed stage than it currently is... but S1 was clearly very much developed at this point to be attractive without any mockups.
