    The most I can find on this topic is <a href="http://sonicresearch.org/tomhack/LAPUTA.HTM" target="_blank">this page on Sonic research</a>, but it doesn't have any area for discussion(to my knowledge).
    <img src="http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/9626/ruinedlaputa.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
    Anyway, for those of you who don't know the movie, it's a Hayao Miyazaki movie from 1986, its centres around a levitating island which <b>is kept afloat by a large green gem</b>. The island has ancient buildings left behind by a long-extinct race. The exterior of the castle, looks not unlike Sky Sanctuary Zone, either.
    <img src="http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/205/laputa1.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
    Somewhere around the film's climax(I think, it's been a while since I saw it), the castle part crumbles
    <img src="http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/7388/laputa2t.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
    As shown in the sonicresearch.rog article, the Robots fall, then fly out of the island, kinda like the eggrobos flying out of the death egg.
    There's also the mechanic of the pirate's airship, who in my opinion looks a little like a certain egg-shaped-Doctor.
    <img src="http://www.onlineghibli.com/laputa/newimages/DolaGangMechanic.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    So did anyone else notice any of this when they watched the movie? do you see it as a respectful nod, or a sheer rip off? Was there already a topic on this that I missed?

    Never seen it before, but I've always wanted to because of these similarities.

    And come on, you should know Sega loved putting pop culture into the original Sonic games; first we get a hedgehog that is almost an animal version of the USA (freedom, speed, red white and blue), the Eggman goo goo ga joob, Madonna, Masato Nakamura of DCT doing Sonic 1 and 2's music, Death Egg, Super Sonic, Michael Jackson doing Sonic 3's music, Knuckles being based off Jamacia and the Nike symbol, and now this. It's not surprising they pulled something else from the Land of Obscurity. :v:

    1986 happened before S3&K happened. I doubt Miyazaki was able to copy SEGA without using time travel.

    Unless you just worded your question weird, in which case, it's not like it was the first time SEGA had <a href="http://brawlcentral.com/images/trophy/sonic/super_sonic.jpg" target="_blank">gathered</a> <a href="http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d17/CaptainKRool/STH/DeathEgg.jpg" target="_blank">inspiration</a> from <a href="http://www.alitacrew.org/widget/preview/SuperSaiyan.png" target="_blank">other</a> <a href="http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/c/cf/DeathStar_size_chart.png" target="_blank">media</a>.

    I was suggesting that Sega were "borrowing" from this film, not the other way around, if I accidentally implied that.

    I'm almost positive Laputa was an inspiration for many things in Sonic. There are other minor similarities, such as the sequence of events in the characters' quest (Green, Ruin, etc).

    It's a lovely movie, and the Sonic vibe was one of the first things I noticed about it.

    If Studio Ghibli made a Sonic movie, I could then die happy. :v:

    That is a fantastic idea! If Studio Ghibli made a Sonic movie that could remind me of OVA, then that would possibly be the greatest Sonic movie ever to exist, ever.

    It... depends. I have mixed views on Howl's Moving Castle. I had read the book before you see and it spun out of it way too much at parts, and completely forgot quite interesting aspects from it at times. It still has a very good message and themes, but it was changed quite from the original. It was very charming though, still one of my favourites from them, but I'm not sure if changing Sonic's like HMC was for example, would be the right way to go.

    But yes, I wouldn't mind them getting Sonic for a spin either. They'd probably make it a lot more charming that the majority of the newer games, even by changing the content a lot. I liked the Sonic movie after all, my favourite spinoff.

    Man, Studio Ghibli, one of the best japanese animation studios out there, Mononoke Hime, Hauru Moving Castle, Tonari no Totoro, Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi, man, so many awesome films...

    Lol, but yeah, Laputa was the same inspiration thing like the Super Sonic / Saiyan thing.

    I should make it clear that this topic's purpose is moreso for general discussion of these similarities than presenting it as some sort of discovery. This is definitely not <I>new</I> information, but there's no rule that says nobody is allowed to discuss it. If you're not interested in contributing to the actual discussion at hand, then kindly refrain from posting.

    heh, thanks. Like I said the only thing I could find about this was that one article, and I was wondering how well know this was.
    And to those who haven't seen the film before, I really reccomend it, it's brilliant and imaginative, with lots of pretty background paintings to look at!

    I never knew that. Kinda neat, but also worrying that we now have "not Engineer" AND "not Totoro" in the same game continuum!

    Apparently the Pokemon Snorlax is based off Totoro, which does make sense, there's a lot of similarities there.

    "Laputa" is named after the floating land in Gulliver's Travels. Knowing ol' Swift, the name is intentionally <I>double entendre</I>.

    Over here in the states, the movie's just called "Castle in the Sky", though they leave the name Laputa in the movie itself.

    (Funnily enough, "Kiki's Delivery Service" had to be renamed in Spanish for similar reasons. Poor Ghibli just can't catch a break!)

    There was a Samurai Jack ep, too, "Jack and the Creature" that was an homage to Totoro. Miyazaki seems to influence everybody.

    Boy, I'm just a trivia <I>machine</I>, aren't I? Move over, Stephen Fry! :specialed:
