  1. Ah, Happy Birthday Sonic 2.
    Fun game it is :p

  2. Same here!

I remember always playing as Tails with my dad as Sonic in Co-op. I remember we (well, he) could get to Wing Fortress before the boss finally overcame him. And for some reason, I associate Oil Ocean with cookies. To this day, it remains my favourite game. Later, I will pull out my Mega Drive and play it one more time.

    Happy b-day for Sonic 2

I like S3&K much much more, Sonic2 is worst of the bunch IMO... even the SMS version is better,

So this is why so little people are posting in the Members Lounge today =P

Wow, it's been so long. This was the first videogame that was mine as opposed to being on a shared system when I got my Mega Drive. I'll have to give this a spin tonight. :)

Just went through the game and unlocked the Conquering Time achievement while I was at it, without really trying. I guess if Sonic CD is ever released on Live Arcade, they'll need to use another name. Surprised the Sonic 1 achievement for not dying isn't called "The Will To Stay Alive".

Anyhow, it's been a blast playing it again. I haven't done it for a while, so while some areas I can just blur through, others were a bit more of a challenge. I managed to take a route in Metropolis Zone that I've never done before, which was weird. Managed to die a few times there, although that's partly because I'd forgot to turn MSN off on the Xbox, and people were trying to talk to me despite warnings in my name not to do so.
As always, the music shone. I really think the music helps make the levels. Nakamura really is a genius. Every song sounds completely different, and gives off a different atmosphere. And Sweet Sweet Sweet is always good, gives a real sense of achievement. I sang along with gusto.

To share my memories of Sonic 2, I was rather lucky to have an older brother who had a Mega Drive, so it's pretty much been there since I was born. Sonic 2 was one of the first games I played, along with Tiny Toon Adventures and Aladdin, but I was never all that good at it as a kid. I still vividly remember that our neighbours once held a party, and after some convincing, my parents brought me and the neighbour's kids back to our house to play Sonic 2. We did some multiplayer, then the proper game, and died many, many times in Chemical Plant. I think it was the first time I actually saw Aquatic Ruin. I did watch my brother go through it at later dates, but never saw the end of the game. Only saw the final boss once.
It was only when I dug out the Mega Drive when re-entering Sonic fandom that I actually completed it. And that led to my discovery of Dreams Come True, and Jpop in general.

Happy Birthday Death Egg. May we forever bask in your warm annihilatory glow of doom.

Is there anyone around who actually bought Sonic 2 on Sonic Twosday? If memory serves, I believe it was the first simultaneous worldwide release of a video game ever.

I got mine on Christmas 1992 in a bundle with Sonic 1, my first Mega Drive and a sonic t-shirt. I still have them. Good times.

Well, you need more rings to progress as Sonic with Tails. :P
Either way, I really have to play this again. I used to prefer Sonic 1/3K, but I played it recently, and my mind really changed. Excellent music, graphics, and of course gameplay.

    This.

I had troubles to beat some of those special stages as Sonic + Tails, after a few failed attempts I tried to control both players at once, and I somehow managed to get all the emeralds. Since that day, I never played as Sonic + Tails again.

Well, I joined in with Tweaker and others to play Sonic 2 over Skype. I came second (I think, despite the fact we weren't racing xD) and I had a blast(processing). It really took me back to all those years ago when I was sat in my room with my Mega Drive (Version 1 dammit <3) and played Sonic 2 for hours on end.

Thanks for having me in guys (even if I didn't say much, save for the occassional "shit" that comes with a ring-loss) =P

Sonic 2. What can really be said for this masterpiece?

In terms of personal experience, it is something that I could only briefly enjoy on rare occasions prior to acquiring a Mega Drive in 1997. I first remember seeing adverts for it on TV that showed the Emerald Hill corkscrew. My first go was on a Japanese import copy that a friend of mine had - memorable because of the Sonic/Tails cross design on the cartridge. The special stage genuinely blew me away. After that, it was stared at through shop windows. A short while later, my dad had an affair with a woman whose son had the game. We'd play together downstairs, the other boy telling me not to pass the signpost at the end of the stage when I finished before him. When I finally got the game with my Mega Drive, it was constantly played. I still bust it out every now and then. It wasn't much more than a year ago that my housemate at university decided that he was going to play through it on my PSP, and he kept coming back day after day.

Sonic 2 introduced many of the traditional elements that we associate with classic Sonic now. Before this game, we had yet to see the seven emeralds, Super Sonic, Tails, the first robotic Sonic, the Death Egg and the spindash. Perhaps the greatest sign of the enduring strength that Sonic 2 has is that 16 years on, it is a game that very much defines the company that created it. As well as the internal struggles in development (from Yuji Naka's return to Sega to tension within STI), there was the last-minute scramble to finish the game on time. Sonic 2 is the game that most people think of when you mention the Mega Drive, Sega's most successful console. Indeed, you can argue that Sonic 2 was mostly responsible for elevating Sega to the height from which it eventually discovered it could fall.

Most importantly for us, Sonic 2 has been the game that has given this scene life. The history of this site ultimately traces back to a Sonic 2 prototype ROM, and much of the best research that we have undertaken was inspired by it. While today's major hacks tend to use Sonic 1 as the base, in the formative days of the scene hacking revolved around Sonic 2. The Hidden Palace savestate, Saxman's music hacking, and so many other breakthroughs came from Sonic 2 research, and those discoveries led us to learn more about Sonic 2 itself. I can't be the only one who remembers KnuxPrower's discovery of the alternate Chemical Plant Zone boss animations, made possible by Nemesis' work on the decompression routine. Sonic 2 is also constantly present in the scene's creative work, from the equally brilliant Sonic 2 HD and Sonic 2 LD projects to hacks such as Project Shadow 2, Sonic 2 Advanced Edit and Sonic 2 Delta.

Is Sonic 2 my favourite Sonic game? I'm not sure. However, I'm certain that it is a great game, and that it had an absolutely massive impact on the world of video games.

    Happy birthday, Sonic 2.

So, I just finished playing through the game. Unlike every single time I've played this game before, I actually did a full runthrough—even beating the final boss! The guys on Skype can tell you that I was having a lot of trouble; I had lost all 12 of the lives I got from beating the game, and I was on my last one. I was having immense amounts of trouble beating the final boss, when Shade came out and and said "You can do it, Tweaker!" which I assume was out of jest. Despite this, I actually did end up beating it! Hot damn! :D

I attempted to actually play the Special Stages this time around, and I managed to land 3 of them. Those special stages are lot more difficult than I remember, and I eventually stopped trying to enter them. I ended up spending like 10 minutes on EHZ1 alone trying to get them, which was fun—I actually got to explore the levels and found a few paths I normally didn't take. I took a very high path I never take in Hill Top, and I took a lower path which served to take a few lives from me in Metropolis Zone. The other Zones ended up as standards runs, so nothing particularly special there.

Still, I had a blast! I hope to do similar things for other games' anniversaries. Until then, happy birthday, Sonic 2! :(

I also remember those animations, Nik =P

Just finished playing though, clocking in at just over an hour. As usual, it was a case of non-stop lives and scoring right up until DEZ (I can't remember if I got to 25 lives or 23) without dying once, then dying over and over at attempts at the final boss, which of course has no rings to shield you from fuckups. I finally got though with 5 lives remaining. =P I also got an emerald - couldn't be arsed to get them all, but getting at least ONE is obligatory.

Also, captured this mini-wtf on my phone - we all know that the catapult tubes are legendary in Casino Night Zone for causing Tails's animations to fuck up (displaying spinning or walking when he should be flying, standing still when walking, etc) but I flew up one as Sonic in the section in CNZ1 where you go up a catapult tube and then there are the bumpers that you have to avoid while reaching a pinball spring on the left, firing you onto the moving blocks on the top. I hit one at the top and somehow got into Sonic's standing still animation, despite still pressing buttons on the pad. He then moved to checking-watch animation. I wondered if I held this bouncing about long enough if he'd get to lying down.... and he did. =P

Ah, Sonic 2. The game that would set the benchmark in Sonic's glory days. Sadly, I never got a chance to play it as a kid. I discovered it from a commercial when I was young, and I still remember it.

It really sucks that I couldn't play it as a kid. By the time I was actually getting into games, it was the age of the Saturn, and Genesis games were discontinued. However, I did get to play the original on the Genesis, a friend of mine still had one.

I always did like Tails, ignoring his voice actor. I remember back in 1st grade, when lots of kids in my school were hyped over Adventure. Hell, I wanted to play it just because Tails was in it. It's a shame that his character has been tampered with. I'd like to see the REAL Tails, where he has a good VA, and isn't annoying.

I also liked Dragonball Z as a kid, and seeing Super Sonic (who I had mistaken as a Super Saiyan) made me want the game like CRAZY. If my favorite TV Show and a game I wanted were to combine, I'd be hooked. Again, I couldn't get it because of the Genesis being discontinued. DAMN YOU SEGA!

Even though I couldn't play it when I was younger, I'm glad I can play it now. Happy Birthday, Sonic 2!

Bitching and complaining about my country -.-'
I just finished the game without using savestates (That damn function is an addiction), using Tails and trying to get all the emeralds. I just get 5 of them, and in the final boss I lost 10 of my 11 lifes. This method was fun to play, but the problem is that I suck badly :P

The only code I remember is the level select one. I never used debug on hardware, so that's the reason, I think.

    Happy Birthday, Sonic 2!

I guess I'm one of the only people who got all the emeralds (with Tails) on todays playthrough?
Tried to get them all in EHZ like I almost always do, but Tails got in front of me on the 7th Special Stage and I lost, so I got the final one in CPZ2. I lost about 5 lives getting killed by Metropolis's enemies. When I got to WFZ, I turned Super Sonic and kept falling in the part with the propellor platforms, totalling to about 3.5 minutes wasted.
I like playing as S&T, it adds some challenge because Tails ends up with no rings most of the time anyway. Overall, a good playthrough of a fantastic game.
