We all know about the Sonic 1 UFO footage in Wayne's World, but I'm curious if anyone ever tried to contact anyone involved in the production to try to find that tape. Or at the very least, find out more about when the footage was given to them, etc.
I think it'd be close to nothing on this. The film's been out for 23 years, I seriously doubt that a crew member would even have that tape or even remember it. To these people it's just footage from a video game from a (then) non-famous mascot character.
I remember a thread about this a while ago, maybe a few years ago? Someone tried tracking this; but I don't think anything came of it. edit: http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=8297&st=0&p=148019&hl=+wayne's%20+world&fromsearch=1&#entry148019
I'm almost willing to bet that no one from the staff even knew or gave a shit about Sonic. Fast forward to today, and I'm willing to bet that just about nobody even remembers the fact that they put video footage of this game in their movie. In fact, today the tape in question is either A) missing in the bottom of a trash heap, B) destroyed, or C) taken by someone and has had the contents re-recorded over (Perhaps with a TV show, a baseball game, softcore porn... or something) I'm pretty much re-iterating what minichapman said, I know... For all we know, the person/people that got the video for use in the movie was just asked to get ANY kind of video game footage to put into their movie... and it just so happened to be this beta Sonic 1 video. Then again, on the flipside, MAYBE they knew what they were after... since Wayne's World DID come out about 8 months after the release of Sonic the Hedgehog So I suppose it is possible that MAYBE (big maybe... mind you) they specifically wanted Sonic, as he was (or on the way to becoming) a big thing at that point. Now, I dunno how long production time for a movie is, or how long it was back in 1991/2. BUT I find it odd that reps at SEGA would just give out a beta tape to anyone... (HOLLYWOOD isn't just anyone, but you get my point), but perhaps there is a small possibility that they wanted footage of something that was hip and new and cool at the time. Now why they got a beta instead of a clip of the full game? Like I said... I dunno how long production time is for a movie, so maybe a clip from the final game wasn't ready yet? Who knows... I think the first thing we could do (if anyone wanted to waste the time to figure this out) is figure out the timeline of the production of the movie... Then we could deduce whether or not footage of the final game was available at the time of production or not. If so, then I'd say it's safe that it was a random tape, regardless of whether or not they wanted Sonic. OR I'm thinking too deep into this myself...
