Some news: according to one US Gold developer, the screenshots are from a PC version, as the ports were developed on PCs.

Anyway, I will slowly investigate it and post results here...

 

I wonder if they had any plans to port this game to the Spectrum or Amstrad CPC... That would have been awesome.

 

if you look at the bit I've ringed the stage could extend as I've badly mocked up with MS Paint

 

I feel like I've seen those clouds before, they look very familiar.

 

So these could possibly be screenshots? I was leaning towards concept art because of Sonic's strange expression. His big eyes...the smirk on his faec...the way his body is contorted as he is trying to slow down. But has an equal chance of being genuine.

When I look at the clouds, I see lips. Just draw a line across the middle in your mind and you'll see.

 

They are the same as the bushes on the ground!

 

Conceptually it's pretty interesting, but I'm hesitant to imagine this being any good. Maybe it's just me remembering PC Mega Man?

I think that most of the times, U.S.Gold weren't given the original sprites when making conversions. I'm positive that some developers have stated at least a couple of times that they had to manually make their own graphics from watching the original arcade (or console in this case) versions, or even from pictures taken from them.
