They are definitely better, even though in the 1st Act, the rings SE has something weird that I don't like between 0:04-0:08, I think you should keep that part the way it was before.

Anyway, I'm glad you managed to find the inspiration to make those songs better.
    Keep the awesomeness up! :)

That ring effect in Act 1 is going the right way, definitely, but it needs just a little bit more tweaking to sound perfect. (EDIT: Also, the PSG in the first ring effect intro.. it's just odd o_O)

Act 2 is bloody awesome. I assume the similarities to Casino Night is deliberate. :P Some of those long note could do with shortening and leaving a little silence (with some of the backing still playing long) to change it up a little, but that's my personal opinion.

Act 1 sounds a fair bit better but It would be highly appreciated if you could make it so it doesn't repeat the "intro" after 28 seconds.
Act 2 sounds BRILLIANT. It's like your own song with a interesting mix of Casino Night Zone!

  6. I don't mean to be bursting your bubble or anything, but I really dislike the first one, particularily because I heard the XM to it. Boy it is eeempty in there. You don't have any sort of hearable atmosphere, in my opinion.

But then again, everytime I criticize someone's music I get a million responses like "fu oerg you nazi"

Act 2 is better, but not really special IMO.

My XMs are usually never designed to be heard on their own. Just barebones templates for notes and such. But w/e opinions.

  8. If I only see 4 channels playing at a time, then it is like that, sorry.

ITT number of channels = quality.

    Bullshit.

Ring Land's music is alright, one of the catchiest tunes in S-Factor. Scrub your ears out.

Yeah, I'm not one of those dudes who's gonna go balls out and use every channel at once just because it's possible. If I don't see a need to do it, then I won't. Especially since PSG1 likes to delay like a bastard after the 1Up sound plays.

  11. This is the GENESIS, not the Master System, Jay. The SMS devs only had 4 channels to use and they used them. If you only use 4 channels on the genesis, that's bullshit.

You're missing my point entirely. I linked a composition that manages to be very strong with a few channels. Many things going on at once isn't a necessity for a great tune; it can help, as much as it can overcrowd an arrangement.

Your "more = better" logic is shallow and disgusting.

  13. I'm not saying more = better. MOD composers from the 90s managed to make beautiful compositions with 4 channels but they had SAMPLES, they could mix stuff, having one sample per chord or whatever.

How do you get bass, chords and accompany into 4 channels without samples? Yeah, didn't think so.

4 channels without samples are only fun when you have arpeggios. Why sega didn't put these into SMPS is beyond me.

Also, why do you say my logic is disgusting? It's my opinion, and quite frankily not a single case that proved my opinion wrong has occured to me ever. Also, I'm tired of getting a shitstorm on me every time I post my opinion. Consider it or fucking don't.

I'm appalled that you seem insistant that a fairly catchy tune which captures an atmosphere well is worthless because it (a) doesn't play many sounds in polyphony and (b) doesn't push the hardware in any way.

Does it need to, when it does the job?

Thirdly, I'm sick of your bullshit -- if you're so authoritive, get a midi from Aquaslash and show he and Tweaker (who arranged the Act 2 version you didn't like either) how it's done, you musical deity you.

I've been talking to Oerg about this on AIM, and here's my point of view. He shouldn't be entitled to complain about number of channels since almost ALL the songs in his S1O used to be conversions from MOD files and thus used no more than 4 or 5 channels at most. In Oerg's defense it must be said that they were his earlier conversions (and my earlier conversions used to be simple and bad too), and that now he improved and uses full 0603 songs most of the times in a good way. But still, if back then he thought certain songs were appealing, it means that good songs ARE possible with a limited number of channels, even in his opinion. So his point doesn't stand because it's not consistent.

That said, I'm not digging the Ring Land song too much, either, but not because of the number of channels.

  16. Captures the atmosphere? you serious?

I'm sick of your bullshit trying to tell others what their opinion should be.

and I said the act 2 version was better.

Also. I insist on nothing. I'm just expressing my opinion. I think that the hacker himself should be all around opinions about his hack. Not people who didn't have shit to do with it, like you, Jay. I don't care if Aquaslash considers my opinion or not, I made my point, I backed it up, I rest my case.

We're not going to continue cockfighting in Aqua's topic; either produce something as an example of how to "do it better" or give a better feedback than "it's shit because it doesn't have many channels".

Oh yes, Jay had nothing to do with it. Even though he totally gave me what became Arid Temple Zone, and did the BG and some of the FG for Spectra Valley. Even though he approved of the negative palette for said zone and is actually working on another zone when he was free time from his college work.

Yeah, next time DO YOUR RESEARCH, before pulling baseless claims out of your rear.

  19. We were talking about the music. I care jack shit about the rest whn talking about it.

Oh yeah, I actually forgot to mention that the main reason I know how RLZ's music suits the mood is because I'm the one doing the art for the fucking zone, hahahahahah. In which case, hold off until you see the art with the new music; even though I'm taking an age (busy with my studies, which come first) I do use the RLZ music as an inspirational soundtrack when I'm working.

Also, you never know -- Arid Temple might get a proper outdoor background from me someday :3
