Your Favourite Unnessecary Extra?

Everything in Zone 2 was amazing to look at. I always loved the huge plane, right before you come to the boost-ramp and are launched through the trio of rings in the air.

 

"This is Sigma Alpha 2, we are en route, everything's a go."

 

I always loved how the elemental shields interacted with the environment in Sonic 3 & Knuckles—the fire and electric shields went out in water, they bounced off projectiles, they protected you from their respective assoeciated environments... etc. It was a nice touch that went above and beyond the basic abilities like enhancing Sonic's moveset and attracting rings and the like that really stood out to me. S3K was always really good at that.

I also loved the bit in Sky Sanctuary where Knuckles would wave you on if you ducked at a certain position in the level after the opening cutscene. You would never even see that unless you tried to! Really clever stuff.

They could have made him reuse an already existant frame, like in Sonic 3, after all.

 

The breakable furniture at the beginning of Emerald Coast. It may have a purpose for Gamma (making it harder to hit enemies), but it has no purpose for Sonic.

 

I like how you can attack Robotnik in S3k, while he's shocking Knuckles. Attacking him does nothing, but I used to think that if I hit him enough Knuckles wouldn't get shocked as much, and drop the Master Emerald, and letting Sonic access a different part of HPZ.

Where about in Sky Sanctuary is this? I don't think I've ever heard of that.

I have always loved sonic cd's extra frames, they have a nice anime feel to them which was lost after sonic 2.

 

My favorite is probably the flashing lights at the end of the 7th special stage in Sonic 2. It basically tells you congratulations for getting all the emeralds, although it flashes even if you lose.

 

I've never seen this. Care to post a video, Tweaks? =P

I like the extra in Heroes where, if (as Team Dark) you control Shadow and pan the camera to look at Rouge, she winks at you.

Anyway, my favourite is the fact that in Hidden Palace, after the floor collapses, and if you hit nothing, when Knuckles punches the wall out, and Sonic points to it. It's probably unintentional, but awesome nevertheless.

 

Re the Sonic statues in Hydro City, I discovered them when trying to modify the Game Genie high jump code. Sonic, instead of jumping up, sucked right through the floor and then there was nothing but the background showing. It was quite a surprise. As for Knuckles waving at you in Sky Sanctuary, that is awesome. I did not know about it at all - I guess it's true what they say about learning something new every day!

I like the animations when you rescue the characters after the bosses in Sonic Advance 2. Sooty Knuckles chasing after Sonic and muttering darkly is pretty darn funny.

 

Coming to think on it, the entire waiting animation fits...

 

I always like in Sonic CD, how when you leave the controller alone, Sonic RUNS AWAY!!! That's so crazy!

 

In Sonic Adventure DX, after the Casinopolis cutscene where Eggman steals the chaos emerald, Cream flies out of the alleyway where you find the Icecap key.

There's also a huge Sonic X advertisement outside of Tails' workshop where you fight Egg Hornet.

Of course my all time favorite is also the mural in HPZ depicting the Doomsday Zone. I never noticed it until just recently. I couldn't believe that I had never noticed it after so long.

 

I thought it was cool how most of <a href="http://images.google.it/images?gbv=2&hl=it&safe=off&q=+site:www.vgmaps.com+Sonic+CD+special+stage" target="_blank">Sonic CD's special stages</a> have their own classy little insignias. Like this one:



In fact, all of SCD's passworded bonuses were fantastic, from the wacky dev illustrations to the Eggman special stage. Also, no mention of "The programmer has a nap", Big's SA2 cameos or the Chao in Space trilogy?
