Sega of Japan's Sonic the Hedgehog Flyer

I love the last page. So that plush was probably the first Sonic one, because there are 2 very similar Sonic 1 sets. This is a great flyer, awesome find!!

 

Er, just had a quick look. This is a not so late prototype because in page 1 there's a screenshot of Spring Yard with the old background... though brigther it seems. And page 6 shows a completely different special stage :o

I always found it peculiar why the Sonic from Sonic 1 8-Bit's ending had only two spines. Looks like it was based off this early Sonic art, as he had only two spines initially.

Kinda reminds me how the Sonic X spines are set out, but the third is always onscreen aswell, not hidden by the other two.

 

These screenshots are from several distinct builds, for some reason. So I think I have to disappoint you. Still, nice.

 

Odd, as Sik mentioned, there is a completely different Secret Stage consisting of a ton of blocks to make more a maze-like structure. That concept looks darn cool, too bad it wasn't kept.

Can anybody translate anything in these flyers, such as Sonic's dialogue? On that note, I rather do like the manga-style Sonic art in those, especially on pages 3 and 4.

Also, whoever took the photos must've loved putting Sonic 'on the edge'. There are a ton of screenshots with Sonic doing his 'teetering on the edge' animation. Nonetheless, these are cool, thanks SS!

Take a look at the Spring Yard on page 6: that's the final background. But you get the beta on Page 1. Could this be some sort of "let's use stock screenshots already published and get some more when necessary" thing? Page 4 has that killer bumper with a darker version of the final background, so there must be three betas (or two betas and the final), each with its own Spring Yard.

Last page, right column shows Sonic going down the second chute in GHZ1. The first frame shows the middle section. There is no lamppost. An ad released in the US shows a similar thing (starting at 0:11); it also shows that at one point, it was 50 rings per life instead of 100.

Everything else looks just like the final (or it may be that I'm not looking hard enough).

I'm beginning to doubt the theory I presented on IRC (that only one prototype build was given to everyone).

 

Hey - aren't those panels from that Sonic manga IceKnight's had on the Sonic Database forever (that he had the first and last pages of)? Looks like the same artist.

 

while on topic with Sonic 1 for the Master System using a lot of old Art, keep in mind that it uses the Black background and a lighter shade of Sonic. (Both of these were early designs in development) Still, I love seeing new Sonic 1 Beta material, good stuff! Also, I just noticed has some of that art in the background of the front cover even been shown before? I never have seen that looking pose art before.

Also, I love the fact that there is a near final screenshot on the front cover next to a fairly early screenshot too. =P

 

I freaking love the little comics explaining some of the stuff in the first game. The artwork is really nice, snagged that one panel as a new avy.

 

It reminds me so much of the initial drawings of Sonic during his concept stage. It's so cool. :specialed:
