The bodies on both look kind of screwed up to me. Specifically, there doesn't seem to be any perspective on the white fur on his chest. Also, perhaps a bit too much shadow on his second tail.
It's like his head his facing one way, his body is facing another, his shoulders don't connect, and his legs aren't properly positioned!
I'd say #1, but with the better proportioned head of #2 (I mean, the back of his head). Also, he still needs a rounder belly, akin to Sonic's. He looks too flat.
I am not happy with either: -The first looks like a distorted Tails (enormous eye, small pupils, strange head) -The second one is not perfected on the eyes shape. That's why I'm keeping experimenting on. This one has some fixes on perspective (position of eyes, belly, nose, hair):
I know how sprite accuracy is important but: Honestly I think you should base the head off that sprite. That looks awesome.

Tails is looking great so far. Here are some minor nitpicks about him though: Tails' arm looks oddly scrawny and stubby. and by contrast makes his legs look kind of fat. If you look at the original Tails standing sprite, you'll see that there's a bit of orange fur in his crotch area, signifying that his legs don't shoot straight up into his white belly fur. His torso should be more spherical/rounded in general; it seems kind of flat as is. If his white belly fur were more circular this might solve this.
Hmm...You think so? Any chance we get get some comparasions? Perhaps Original Sprite Tails, New Tails with both versions of the Sonic?
Hate to back track, but I still prefer the old tails design. It better defigns the age gap between the two with Sonic being 15 and Tails being 8 IIRC. If you want to stick very true to the original art that is fine. The young look can still be pulled off with the body proportions. Disregarding the new head, I'm a bit baffled by TmEE's comment about him looking too short or chubby. If anything he currently looks like a skinny 12 year old and I don't feel it represent's his in-game art well. Just like Sonic his body needs to based on a shpere.
