The shine on the cheek is used to help define the 3dimensional feeling Sonic is supposed to have compared to Knuckles. Try to see if you can mess around with the shading and match the Knuckles sprite.

A few things were bugging me, so I decided to take a stab it the sprite you posted. I moved the lowest left pixel of the top-most quill to the right 1 pixel to give a more slanted/curved illusion. It looks great to me when looked at a decent size and with bi-linear interpolation filters placed on it. While I was at it, I adjusted his mussel and his gloves a bit, and added 2 pixels to his arm because I thought it looked a bit too skinny. I also added 1 pixel to the left side of his stomach to make it appear more roundish. I am still new here, and I apologize if these things have been discussed before, but I honestly don't have the time to read every page you know?

I wouldn't say that it's "better"--the lowest spike is way too short and fat now. This is one of the problems that called for a spike extension in the first place. At the very least, it needs a thinner edge extended by a couple of pixels.
