Wow, I can't beleive so many lives are lost beating the final boss! I never die anymore against it. I always start with two timed jumps, hitting Dr. Robotniks giant mecha in the ass, and staying behind him from there on, hitting his back from time to time.

I just played through the entire thing as Tails, something I've not done for years, I lost one life by making a bad judgement in CPZ (just before the boss, where you get the whole speed section, I badly timed a jump, fell in water, missed the starlight-like platform, and fell to my death) =P
That was the only life I lost. Heh, I honestly didn't know people die so often. Then again, I've played this game countless times in the past 16 years, so that explains why. =P

Happy Birthday, to one of the greatest games of all time, with wonderful, perfectly fitting music, and amazing surreal artwork. <3 Sonic 2

Hell, I usually mess up before I battle the Chemical Plant boss, I use all my lives, throw the controller at the TV. I have got farther on certain occassions however.

Yep, I suck at video games. :(

Ahh, the memories this game brings back to me. Not too long ago I just finished a Tails run through, no emeralds, beat the final boss on my third attempt, Silver Sonic on my second. The WFZ boss brought back some pain, but everything else was pretty smooth through the game, and that's the way I like it. I've had Sonic 2 since before I can remember, on a 3-in-one cart with Sonic 1 and Robotnik's bean machine. The enjoyment I had whilst playing the game again was indescribable.

I just did a no spindash Tails run. I have to say, I feel accomplished. I've never actually beaten it with Tails, I started to collect the emeralds, but stopped on realizing I was wasting my time. =P This game is almost perfect in every way, and once the ending song (Sweet sweet sweet) started playing, I felt all nostalgic. I love this game.

    Happy birthday, Sonic 2.

There isn't much I can say about Sonic 2 that hasn't already been said. The game has had a huge impact on us all. It was my first game as well. I got it back in Christmas 1994 when it came bundled with my newly opened Genesis. I'll never forget those times.

What a spectacular 16 years! Funny to see it coincided with the 360 release of Sonic Unleashed as well.

I hate Metropolis and Wing Fortress. Always have and always will. Although I do appriciate the intricacies of the zones now. Wing Fortress really was badass.

I had so much fun today! The whole time, I was broadcasting myself playing the game on Yahoo Live, and I had a fair amount of friends and other people watching and listening. It was a party! I wanted to Skype with the other Retro people, but it was lagging my game too much, unfortunately. :(

I did a regular run-through with Sonic only, and that was probably the first time I've done that in years. The game is so much easier than I remember it... I only died a few times, and racked up a whole bunch of lives. At the beginning, I was trying to get all the emeralds, so I spent a long time in each zone, collecting a bunch of rings and going to all the lamp posts. I got three, and had a hard time after that, so I just gave up on collecting them all. I couldn't believe how much easier the final boss(es) was/were than I remember it/them! When I was younger, it seemed like this super impossible thing to beat without cheating, but I only lost a few lives this time. Both Silver Sonic and Robotnik's patterns are quite simple (Robotnik's especially), and it's hard for me to believe that I ever thought they were hard to beat.

After I beat it the first time, I did another run with the emeralds code and debug mode enabled, and blasted through with Super Sonic going constantly. I felt like I deserved it, after beating it legitimately. :( That was a lot of fun, but I did get lots of comments from Yahoo Live people about "Super Saiyan Sonic!!!!!!11".

I took a break after that, and broadcasted some remixed Sonic 2 music for a little while. Then, I played through both the Nick Arcade proto and the Wai proto, and I had to explain to some of the people about why there were different zones from the final game.

Lastly, I decided that I really should try to beat all of those special stages, so I used level select to keep going to them (losing many times), until I finally beat all 7. I love Sonic 2's special stage, so I really enjoyed it. I can't believe that the people watching didn't get fed up with me losing so much, though! They were cheering me on the whole time.

It was such an awesome day, and I loved every minute of it. The only thing that was missing was 2-player netplay, but none of my friends were interested, unfortunately. I do wish that I had been able to play on my Genesis, but sadly, it's not here with me. I should hopefully be getting it back soon, though.

Sonic 2 is one of my most cherished games, and I feel that it might possibly be the main reason why I love video games so much. There's something magical about that game, and it has definitely made a huge impact on my life. Because of that, I wanted to properly celebrate its existence, by experiencing the magic and nostalgia from days gone by, and sharing it with others. Cheesy, I know, but boy did I have fun.

Happy birthday, Sonic 2. Thank you for 16 years of fun. Games like you are few and far between.

This day has actually inspired me to try harder on my Sonic 2 HD work. I'm going to do my best to devote more time to that project now (if I can).

I can play all the sonic games on the original hardware one handed. I've often smoked and played at the same time, much to the amazement of my friends.

I can even play as Sonic in my right hand and tails in my left, using both at the same time to take down some bosses really quickly.

    Oh yes, Sonic 2.
I confess I'm only an active fan since 2004 and 5, so when the game was new, I didn't get it.
BUT, as soon as I discovered the emulators, I downloaded the roms, and it was there I could finally taste Sonic's MegaDrive awesomeness. That was two years ago. I've only played Sonic 2 once. Why? Because I know how the emulators are illegal if you don't own the original cartridge. That is why I've been trying to get my hands on the Collections as well as a Mega Drive, which I acknowledge is a brilliant console, and Sonic games' cartridges, as well as others.

My experience with Sonic 2. I have enjoyed playing Sonic 1 (it's the one I remember best from when I was growing up) and Sonic 3 and Knuckles more. This last one is actually my favorite one. But with Sonic 2, I love, I just love the music of Grand Metropolis (I think that's the name), Emerald Hill Zone and Casino Night. And the level design in general is astounding. It's useless to say I'm not excited with the Sonic2HD project.

    Happy Birthday, Sonic Twosday.
May all Sonic fans get to know this game and how cool it is. And may Sonic 2 HD be a very good, strong and successful community project.

Happy birthday, Sonic 2! It wasn't the first game I ever played, or the first Sonic game I ever played... but it was pretty much the only game I had for my Megadrive... while I had it. I haven't ever gone through Sonic 2 in one sitting. I probably won't...

You aren't the only one. >.>

I ran through Sonic 2 the other day on my Wii via virtual console and I got through it very quickly. My friend was staring at the screen with that mouth half-opened look because I was playing it as I would during a speed run. The VC version has a lot of bugs..I found myself stuck inside of many loops and walls and managed to spin-dash off Tail's airplane in the Zone before Wing Fortress. >( Managed to beat the game with five lives to spare...damn bugs robbed me out of the others. :(

I dunno about most of those, but it's quite possible to fall off by spin dashing in Sky Chase.

I can do it on the real hardware but it seems like it happens more often on the Wii for some reason, I don't think the emulation is very good. :(

I just can't believe that Sonic the Hedgehog2 is 16 years old. I remember seeing the commercial for it when I was 2 years old! And I remember the Debug Code, but I have a hard time making it work, seeing how you have to press "C" after each sound. I only wished that the final version had Hidden Palace zone, seeing how it's my favorite level, but there are hacks of course that have it and I thank those who made those hacks. In the final version, my favorite level and song is definetely Sky Chase Zone. Happy birthday Sonic the Hedgehog 2!

I still remember the first time I beat EHZ act 1 in under 25 Seconds as Tails!
Isn't it technically Tails' birthday too then?
Happy Birthday Tails! Go get your drivers license!

I celebrated by playing through Sonic 2 on my Genesis 2 using Sonic & Tails together while getting all the emeralds. But not just that. I used an Atari 2600 Joystick to do it. All I did was push start at the beginning with a Genesis controller then unplugged it and plugged in the Atari joystick. As Sonic games only require one action button on Genesis, it was possible. The Atari 2600 controller only has one button and a joystick.

It made the game more exciting as I had to be careful to time everything right. This was my first time trying it, but I did almost just as well as I do with any other system controller. Usually I get all the special stages done in Emerald Hill since there are 3 starposts in act 1 and 5 starposts in act 2; one of which is hard to get to unless you are using Knuckles. I was able to finish the last special stage in Aquatic Ruin Zone.

So this is a good new way to enjoy old Sonic games like it's a new experience. Push start on a Genesis controller and swap it out for a Sega Master System, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, or Colecovision controller. They all work with the Genesis. The Colecovision and Atari 7800 joysticks use their left action button for jumping and do not have a pause button while Sega Master System's controller jumps with button 1 and pauses with button 2. But when you pause using the SMS controller it makes you jump at the same time, so when you unpause it you will be in midair.

I also tried the Bally Professional Arcade and Vectrex controllers as they fit, but they do not work. The Vectrex controller uses its four buttons for up down left and right instead of its joystick so you can not jump. The Bally controller causes a glitch. The joystick does not make you move. When you use the trigger it causes the palette to change in-game and it freezes up.

I wonder what would happen if you used Game Genie to get to Hidden Palace Zone then swap the controller for Bally and hit the trigger...

I remember playing Sonic 2 in primary school. That was one of my first videogames I ever played, and my first Sonic game. Shortly followed by Sonic & Knuckles (for some reason we skipped Sonic 3, maybe they didn't like MJ? =P). I played those two games so much in two or so years there. Then when I left primary school (that's at age 11 for you Americans with your weird education system) I forgot about it. However in my second year of secondary school I saw someone playing Sonic Advance - that's what caused me to buy a GBA, my first console, and get into videogaming.

    It is a shame that I wasn't a few years older, though - Advance and its ridiculously cute Tails ending pose caused me to become an obsessive fanboy for several years, up to '04/'05-ish ;_;
