sonic 3 and knuckles: water...

  1. ever notice how the sonic 3 levels with the exception of marble garden all contain water?
and s+k contains no water at all (although I do concede FB was initially a 'sonic 3' level in terms of order)

was there a conscious reason for this? always struck me as somewhat odd.

+++theory+++s3 seems to overuse water to a degree, poss s+k did have water at some point in dev, but due to the overkill of s3, the developers removed all subsequent waters...+++theory+++

    what do you think?

Also, what's with the excessive water shields in Sonic and Knuckles? They're so pointless, unless you're Sonic.

I guess it just plays as a normal shield...

I've noticed, yea, and I never really liked it. I don't think it was intentional, IMO. The levels probably just turned out that way. Still, there's nothing stopping you from adding water to the levels on your own if you like.

Actually, S&K alone doesn't have the drowning music :(

That's actually quite interesting. It's a nice observation.

Underwater you can't drown with it but since S&K doesn't have any it is pointless like you said.
...and even when you're Sonic, that bounce-shield is worthless, meh.

I can't understand why people even think about them seperately. We know they were one game which got split in half, so why consider Sonic 3 as a separate game at all?

Sonic 2 is still better :P

I noticed the overuse of water in Sonic 3 from the time I first played it, I never really thought about it though, the only level that seemed strange with water was Carnival Night.

  12. exactly what I was thinking

am I right in thinking in act 2 (when the water appears) the lights short? I know some of act 2 kills the lights, is that the reason?

Because it was marketed and sold as such.

No, Knuckles pushes a switch, as usual.

  15. That's it - thanks!

Still - Carnival + Copious amounts of water + Large electricity load = Potential disaster.
That's the Electrician in me coming out, that :D

If it's pure water then it's a total insulator. =P

Not that there'd be any large bodies of pure water in a city like that.

You never know, there could be a dam near by that opens when you press the button.

My question is, why is there a carnival on an island like that?
