I could never get into mario games. they never seemed to "work" with what I thought a platformer should be.

So, I met the guy who originally drew that sonic and mario in this game lately, pretty nice guy by the way.

Here's what he said when I asked:

Anyways, so why did I draw Mario and Sonic "on the rocks"? It's an homage to "Han Solo in Carbonite" as well as an attempt to lighten up the series - plus it was simply fun to draw ... we decided it's a tad too risky to put both into the game, though - and SEGA would've never let us pass certification w/ them in anyways. That's why they don't actually appear in any of the levels but are still part of the tile set of the 'first world'.

So yeah, mystery solved I know this comes out of nowhere, but trust me when I say it is legit.

I took the liberty to put this on the wiki, of course sans quotes and sans sources to keep everyone's butt safe
