Buttrocky? No, more like a mix of rock and electronic techno, which made it is joyfully upbeat. The music in most of Sonic's stages in SA2... now THAT'S buttrock.
For once, fair play to you. I guess Adventure did have a relatively varied soundtrack. I was trying to dispute you but Emerald Coast, Casinopolis, Windy Valley, Final Egg... All very different. Thinking about it, SA1 had a great soundtrack.
I think it's the best soundtrack in any 3D Sonic game, to be honest. The strong, upbeat melodies are memorable and while composed differently, do capture the feel of the classic games in some way (at least, to me). In fact, Speed Highway At Dawn is one of my favorite videogame tunes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snqQlTaXsTc
My favorites are Sonic Rush Aventure OST )which sounds like Lost World OST but more Tropical) and Sonic Rush! Generations is awesome but it's more a compilation of the best tracks throughout Sonic history so it shouldn't count hahahaha.
Colors had a great soundtrack, it was varied and it all sounded great... Then we had this Mario ripoff stuff.
SLW isn't constantly Mario-esque, but holy crap when it is, it really is. Tropical Coast 1 (which already looks enough like Mario), Lava Mountain, Sky Road 4, Sky Road Bonus and Wonder World are the biggest offenders as far as music is concerned. And back when the game was announced they were saying "oh yeah it's just a coincidence that it looks like Mario Galaxy". That couldn't have been a bigger fib.
Tropical Coast Zones 2 and 4 (Juice Archipelago) is even more like Mario, right down to the accordion! It feels like they ripped it straight out of Sea Slide Galaxy.
The first pinball table isn't so bad, as it's required to beat the game, but the second pinball table is horrendous. It's not only incredibly boring, but it requires very little skill and virtually amounts to luck. I found it one of the most annoying red rings. It's a lot like the snowball red ring (yes, that one) in that it really does come down to luck. I got that really easily first time round (due to luck) but the second time around it was incredibly infuriating (my save was accidentally deleted so I red ringed twice). The pinball red ring is the same: it really comes down to luck.
... Maybe it's because I'm not as familiar with Mario, but Tropical Coast just felt to me like something that could be in Sonic 3. Or are we now denoucing anything not-buttrock as Mario?
No. I just think this game has a very Mario vibe to it. Sonic Colors for example was not Mario, nor was Unleashed. Those games had a variety while still sounding Sonicy.
I think it felt so much like Mario thanks to that series lately having a hardon for plain and beachy themed levels. Between Sunshine, the three or four NSMB games, and the two Galaxies, Tropical Coast's two main acts radiated Mario from the soundtrack to the visuals. Comparatively something like Seaside Hill is much more Sonic than how bland Tropical Coast is. From the fruit, the tubes, and the waffle bit with the cannons...seemed like it belonged in Galaxy.
Thats not uncommon, I was asking people who didnt really play or see much of lost world to take a listen to its tracks and they totally got classic sonic or CD sonic vibes off of them.
https://miiverse.nintendo.net/posts/AYMHAAACAADbUgNqfDdWVA All commentary required is on that post. For the record, I'm replaying the game on my own system now on my account. I decided to challenge myself by going for all red rings in one swoop and to never see the Game Over screen. Using this, I can tell you exactly where the game gets pure bullshit. Enter the jungle stage's fourth act with 30 lives, leave with less than 15. Parkour system REALLY likes to act up there. At least I can wall run now though, but it's still clunky and finicky to all hell.
3DS Hard mode.... HASFSFWEAEGAEAAWDFDFSDFSDGAAAHHHHHHHHHH I swear to God, if I ever 100% this game I'm throwing the cartridge down the garbage disposal. I'm not going to return it as that means some other poor sap might see it in a store and decide to buy it. But I'll never 100% it, because without rings, S RANKS ARE FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE HALF THE TIME. All in all though, unless there are hard modes for the special stages, I have 4 more levels to beat.
I noticed something also upon getting the last Chaos Emerald on the Wii U version that leads me to believe this game is a bit rushed: there's no "You unlocked Super Sonic!" message. Add this to Super Sonic's model having two mouths and... yep.
Late to the party, I know, but I downloaded the demo for 3DS (10 uses only lol) and wasn't really digging on it too much. It's not a complete shit fest, it all seems to work enough I guess. This all sounded good on paper, but ah well. 2014 Sonic, here we go.
