First sprite is used. Its used when Sonic gets up from waiting as he lays down. See here. Its one of those short second frames. Edit: Call me Captian Obvious.
Ooh, nice find. Never noticed they reused the first frame before... Should that be added to the site?
Those sprites were on the old Area 51, I should put it on SRZ. But yeah that's an interesting clarification on the resued first frame.
Their actually peach in Sonic 1s title screen and the frame just before you start "waiting." As well as other places. I think that changed after Sonic Adventure.
Actually, it was after Sonic Advance 2, but the point is, that's not what I'm talking about. Look closely at the sprite in question in both images. The one in the final game has peach eyelids, as opposed to the 'unused' animation, which has blue eyelids. The final frame could be a mere evolution of the original sprite.
Wern't those sprites found in the beta, but recolored with the right pallete? So the recoloring might not be right. =\
So, findings made using the debug mode aren't cool... Ok, but I still want to post this: This is Marble Garden Zone, Act 2. It seems that there is a single ring floating in the upper left corner. Maybe they put it there to prevent a player to get the "Perfect" bonus?
Hm, sorry for the bump, I just wanted to make sure that we all know this (before I would post about it), placing a Starpost to the right of the Egg Capsule at the "end" of Aquatic Ruin act 2...

Good for erasing silly TT times with those glitched, 'secret' versions of Knuckles, but nought else. Just a curio, I guess. I fucked with S3's debug more than I played the game. Is it already known how placing many surfing Sonic objects on the AIZ transition (when it is aflame) fucks the loading of AIZ2 tiles?

This isn't unintentional impossible like the later levels in Sonic 2 though.
The perfect bonus was in Sonic 2 and was just forgoten. As sonic 3 was probably built of sonic 2 they wouldn't have removed it. It may even be in sonic 1.
