So I'm realizing now that if indeed Archie is letting the Sonic license lapse as rumors are suggesting, the last inkling of Penders' relevence is going to be squashed at long last. He only has two claims to fame right now: Lara-Su Chronicles and the ramifications of his legal battle with Archie. With one no longer existing, all he needs to do is either finish or drop the other and he will fall into complete obscurity.
Either that or he'll try and use the Sonic cast because Archie aren't any more, conveniently forgetting that it's SEGA that own them.
I can only picture him trying to spent an endless amount of time writing an elaborate story about how he was absolutely right and Archie were literally hitler, akin to something you'd read on r/thathappened, with the whole world standing up and cheering for the heroic Penders who stood up against THE MAN. Can't wait!
As someone who hasn't been keeping up with this drama, does anyone know how Ken feels about any of his characters being used in fan projects, specifically in this case a potential fan game? I seem to recall a fan once approaching him and he said they could use his characters of they paid a hefty fee. I'm hoping this isn't the case as there's actually a lot of potential behind a lot of his characters I want to use.
If this is true, Ken Penders really is an enormous asshole (as opposed to just a plain old asshole). It's fan-fiction, nobody should have to pay a fee to use these characters if there is no profit to be made by distributing it. That goes against the concept of fan fiction and fan projects in general. But then again, considering how egotistical he comes off as, I really shouldn't be surprised. Again, it only matters if it's true.
He said at Sonic Revolution last year that people can use his stuff if they do this: "[Insert character name here] is (c) to Ken Penders" and as long as its not for profit. Remember though this is coming from a guy who also said "making fan comics get you nowhere".
He said that while Evan Stanley and Tyson Heese were in the same building as him at Sonic Revolution.
Don't encourage Penders. Avoid anything he's claiming like the plague. Not only does doing so encourage him to do more of his mad bullshit, you run the risk of being sued yourself, he's crazy enough to do it. There are plenty of other fancharacters out there if you're that desperate to use unofficial ones.
He also wrote four stories about Sonic under the name "Ian Potto". It's rather heartwarming to realize where he came from and that he actually did get to achieve his dream of writing for Sonic.
why can't you just focus on drawing your own shitty ocs horribly and leave actual sonic characters alone
It's been a long time since I reacted with audible noises to Sonic fanart. I thought I'd seen the worst of it, but this is some fucking uncanny valley shit. Like he sketched that, looked at the finished product and said "the internet will like this". What the actual fuck. I feel like I'm looking at someone's fever dream. Well done Penders. Edit: the twitter responses are fantastic.
You remembered well :P From issue #104 (The second Guardians of the Galaxy rip-off issue). Why the freaking heck he ever gave Sonic characters realistic joints on spaghetti arms and legs I will never know. But he's actively gotten WORSE.
"What if someone drew Sonic as one of those caricatures that people are always drawing at booths in malls" okay but seriously, I will never unsee that. The eyes...the creepy little legs...........his twitter header, like he's so proud of his awful art....
