I happened to be thinking of the Super Sonic cheat in Sonic 2, and I was like "what is the meaning of 4,1,2,6?!". I figured it must have had some meaning since the other codes held meaning. So after Googling for a while, I stumbled upon this: http://bible.cc/genesis/41-26.htm I don't think it's a coincidence at all. Interesting reference indeed! UPDATE: Also... http://bible.cc/job/41-26.htm I think this one is probably more coincidental. Still, it fits!
Oddly enough, reference or not, it makes sense to me. They both invoke the number 7 (Sonic: 7emeralds, Bible: 7Cows, 7 heads of grain, 7 years) they both involve Genesis (Sonic: Sega Genesis, Bible: Book of Genesis), and they both use that same number (Sonic: Super sonic cheat, Bible: Passage)
Huh. Makes sense. Strange thing to hide in the game, but, I guess they picked things that meant stuff to them so they could remember it when needed.
I'm just waiting on someone to draw Super Sonic surrounded by seven healthy cows, or better yet, as a healthy cow himself.
It never occured to me that 4126 might be a reference to a bible passage. Wasn't Sonic 2 developed in Japan? There isn't much of a Christian population there if memory serves.
Japan does have a Christian past so it wouldn't be unusual for a reference like this to pop up from them. And as human beings we like to have some light hearted fun relating stuff to other stuff.
Unblow your minds there a little bit, guys. This is a likely story and a cool find but I wouldn't take it as gospel without more evidence.
No, it was developed in the US (as a cooperation between members from Sonic Team and STI, so half Japanese and half American developer-wise)
I acknowledge that but the likelihood of a Christian being among the japanese developers isn't as high as it might be if the developers were American. S'all I'm saying. In any event, Sonic 2 wasn't developed solely in Japan so my point is moot.
Exactly. I wouldn't hold my breath just yet. It is a beautiful coincidence (if not actually intentional), but I think there might be something more into it; some other meaning. I believe that further research is required in order to reach a concrete conclusion. In my humble opinion, however, I believe that this small code is such a trivial thing; we should have been focusing our researches in more productive resources instead! This should be Supreme Topic of 'Other' Knowledge material at best.
This obviously implies something of invincibility. Super Sonic is in fact invincible and cannot be penetrated by any force. So, this reference as well makes the 4126 all the more convincing that it is a bible reference. You got two pretty solid references so far, so I'm pretty convinced.
Wasn't Naka about 26 while developing S2? Maybe he had a very fun april fools day when he was 26? I really think it's all coincidences.
I always just assumed it was an internal build number of the game for some reason. However, the possibility of a Bible reference is very intriguing.
I doubt they put bible references into the games. I thought they were some kind of significant dates.
Not always (for Knuckles in Sonic 2 they went with 1, 6, 7, 7, 7, 2, 1, 6 - 16777216 is 2²?, aka the number of combinations you can store in three bytes - though that came out later so I suppose they just looked for a number that resembled something...).
