Yeah. With games like Sonic Generations, Mario Kart, and even freaking Smash Brothers running on it I can't see this game being unable to run on a regular 3DS, let alone new 3DS
But how much work should go into making Retro engine compatible with 3DS GPU (HW rendering)? I mean, a LOT of games could be converted to 3D like M2 releases but without emulation. Currently the 3DS is the only device one that has a 3D screen available. Btw I'm justing asking this out of curiosity because I will more than happily buy the Switch with Sonic Mania :3
Pretty sure a while back, we posted tweets of Taxman running ports of his Sonic CD remake and his/Stealth's Sonic 1 and 2 remasters on the New Nintendo 3DS (believe it was also mentioned that he was able to port them to the standard 3DS as well). Possible added 3D elements aside (like the rings flying out around the screen a la Chaotix, and the 3D wireframe Special Stages); I don't think Mania should have any problem running on the (New) 3DS. Especially given it's graphically designed to be a "what if?" retraux Sonic game for the Sega Saturn, so it's not like it would be pushing the hardware much otherwise.
My question though is if porting Sonic Mania on the 3DS would be worth it from a business standpoint. It's safe to assume that the 3DS will be phased out soon, at least having 2017 to go through and then who knows, and it's already going to be on Nintendo's new "portable" system the Switch.
What I'm getting(guessing?) from Stealth and Overlord's answers that the 3DS, along with maybe the Vita and smartphones, physically lacks the hardware to run Mania as it is now at the desired performance. It's literally too small for the game to work on it. :/
Regardless of if it's possible to run Mania on 3DS, I imagine that they're too busy working on actually finishing the game to worry about porting it to more systems than it is already coming to right now.
I've got similar thing in plans, however not with Switch, but with GPD Win and PC version It's just my assumption, but I'm guessing that it shouldn't have especially high system requirements (and to be honest, at this moment I'm especially interested in this thing (system req.), asides from release date of course). I'm not especially happy with the fact that it'll be probably released only on Steam, but I'm guessing that I don't have other choice (damn, are people buying games on GOG/Humble Store/etc so irrelevant consumer group, or it's rather about Sega's persistence agains any other platform than Steam?).
Which is probably exactly the reason why Tantalus is handling the Switch port. If Mania ever does get a 3DS port (if it's indeed feasible), then that would be great. It's already coming out on four platforms though, including PC and another Nintendo portable. The vast majority of folk who want to play this game will be able to do so. The 3DS would just be another option.
Yeah, trust me, when I mentioned the 3DS, it was just as a hypothetical, not an explicit demand for a 3DS release of any kind. I'm very much thankful that the game is being targeted at full-on consoles as well as PCs, rather than being treated as a second-tier type of thing where it only comes out for older handhelds or mobile devices or things like that. It's being taken seriously as a part of the series' future, and I'll take that fact over a 3DS port anyday.
Quick question after tripping over this problem in Sonic CD: Will Sonic Mania play nice with 144Hz screens?
Wow, just straight up blue spheres huh? That's... ok? Disappointing? Honestly idk I wonder if they used some of the features they made for the Sonic 3 & Knuckles remake tech demo. But hey finally some new stuff. Knew they'd slip eventually :specialed:
