Speaking of nitpicking about the timer, it's still in frames rather than the more standard centiseconds.
These video's were rushed. I should have mentioned this :\ None of the bosses are..say..."complete" I'm going to majorly tweak them all near the end of production. I will put into consideration all you've said here. Also, Sonic bounces only because its triggering him dieing because of falling off screen. It's been fixed for a while. I just accidentally turned it back on. Heat isn't horrible for me. This is, however, probably because I've played/tested this level over 100 times. When I find beta testers to actually test my game, Ill see what they think. I may change the effect to be a bit less. A lot of sound effects I planned on adding in at the very end. Did you think I would leave a quiet earth quake? :P I like it. Guess its a preference thing. If it bothers people that much I can always just inch it back a block or so. The 0 is there, just not visable. I haven't worked on time trials for months. I just wanted everyone to get an idea of how it would be. Again, little visual things will be tweaked near the end. My main goal now is to get levels done and bosses done. And the rest of sonic 1 ported.
If I may ask hez, what are you using to program this? Doesn't seem like a rom hack as I see some ADD/OR ink effects when you collect the rings. Far as I know, Genesis games didn't support ink effects.

Rathe does the sprites, but I never saw any problems. Mind elaborating? We'd like to improve the sprites however possible.
As Sparks said, elaboration would be great. I've been working on these Sonic graphics for quite the while and ANY advice would be fantastic. I really want them to be something I'm not ashamed of later on. I'm already horribly embarrassed of 90% of my pixel work.
I had art very similar to this whipped up for Sonic Classic 2 (oh lordy a sequal planned?) with mechanical shit mixed with a Green hill esque level.

I know it's not much, but thanks to SFGHQ I managed to do the Hydrocity/Launch Base ocean effect (you can't tell from the screenshot). But I'm trying to edit it so that when you're above the water, the top part always stays right below the clouds. This level is in a VERY early state right now. EDIT: It's a fangame, not a rom hack
Hopefully you'll add a shadow to that foreground where the grass meets it. Otherwise it's looking good so far.
