I'm working with my brother to hack Sonic 1. Is there any way to edit Marble Zone's tiles using tiles that resemble Pumpkin Hill (Sonic Adventure 2 in 2D) in ESE II? I downloaded the Pumpkin Hill tiles from Simon's featured affiliate site, but I don't know how to "port" them (sorry if I used the wrong term) into the Sonic 1 ROM.

And yes, at the same time I'm also working on my own hack.

    Thanks,
    -DK

Bleeding Cut working on a hack. That's so cool! ^_^

Tiles are in a special format. It isn't readable by any art program except for the program TLP, and it's very outdated and doesn't have any kind interface.

If the tiles from that... Pumpkin Hill... is in the Genesis format, then it's pretty easy to port the art, but elase you really need to learn more about TLP and how to use it.

In the future, any people will be able to draw their own level arts in Sonic 1 because of an editor called SonED is developed to make it easy to create levels from the scratch. However, that's in the future. For now you have to use hours of work with TLP and the old SonED to put that art into Sonic 1.

Hm, I see. Yes I know that it is eye-popping that I'm working on a hack. XD

I will check the type of file it is, then get back to you. :)

Um...it's a CCA file. How can I convert it to a Genesis file to TLP will read it?

Which affiliate was it on? (And for Tech Members) What's a CCA file? I don't recognize that extension.

CCA is an extension used in some kind of "fan-game maker" program.Forget to using that in hack, since usually they are in a quality too high to fit that in genesis sprites.(You are limited to 64 colours,or 48 if you want to have sonic visible).

Aww....okay now, onto Plan B then....

Is it possible to change the image of the objects? For example, in Marble Zone, is there a way for me to change the appearance of the CaterKiller? I want to make Marble Zone a Genocide City Zone, but in Sonic 1. And I wanted to know if it's possible for me to change the CaterKiller so he looks more like something scary....like a zombie. I'm serious, can I do that?

The CaterKiller is compressed art. To edit it, you must decompress the art out of the ROM, edit with TLP, recompress, and then insert back into the ROM. As for the level art, just use SonED to edit a save state, then just port the data from the save state back into the ROM.

How do I decompress the art? What utility can I use?

And, something's wrong with TLP. Whenever I open up a ROM, the tiles are all garbled and don't look right. How do I fix this?

The Sonic Data Compressor, aka TSDC, can be used for compressing/decompressing. It can be found at Sonicology. As for TLP, make sure you set it to genesis format. Garbled nonsense is what you SHOULD see when you open a ROM, just scroll down until you find graphics.

Are these the Caterkiller tiles? What's the rest of the tiles?

    Sorry for asking so many questions, but I've never done a serious hack before. I'm still learning. ^^;;

Yes those are them. The other tiles are nothing, don't worry about them.

Thank you. ^_^ But I have another problem (sorry!):

I tried to open up the Sonic 1 ROM. It's totally screwed up now. ^^;; I had to download it again and rename it so I'd still have the original.

What did you do? Did you put the actual ROM as the destination file while you were compressing?

Yes, that was a bad thing. You need to set the destination file as a new file.

    Example

    Source file: Caterkiller.bin
    Destination file: CaterkillerCompressed.bin

You need to make something up for the destination file, not use the hack itself.

Seriously, if you want to redraw an enemy from Sonic, just wait a day or two and I will release my tool. You don't need TLP anymore ^_^
