Sonic R - Can you feel the sunshine x Stevie Wonder - My Cherie Amour. Same chord progressions, same note. Also has the arpeggio from Marble Zone at 0:54.
Jun Senoue was sampling some red hot fucking fire. Super Cat - Ghetto Red Hot (Hip Hop Remix) Sonic Adventure - Red Hot Skull (Red Mountain) Just sample 4:11 to 4:15 and you too can add some red hot fire into your songs. Good fucking songs all around.
I love this thread, I wish I had seen it sooner... I've been making a playlist with a similar concept, although not all of these are soundalikes. Still, you may enjoy! And you may also notice toward the bottom/recent entries, I've added ideas generated from this thread. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/03xiwdc0jlLTyzY6OOaVpR?si=151e08128e024148
The beginning of the cutscene where Sonic first encounters Sage and Giganto has music very similar to a track from the End of Eva, down to the melody and everything. Coincidence or cheeky tribute?
It's more the instruments that are similar than the composition, and this is almost entirely based on SA2B and Sunshine being my two most-played Gamecube games when I was a kid, but there's this:
I was listening to this (at 1:30) and thinking: "It reminds me of some Sonic song." Then I remembered Studiopolis (starts at 0:55)
I watched the Jackie Chan/Sammo Hung/Yuen Biao film Dragons Forever a few days ago, and the main theme (which turns up in instrumental form several times in the movie) really strongly reminded me of Sonic 3's Data Select music. I couldn't hear it so much in the main theme with vocals, but in the instrumental score I thought the similarities really stuck out. You can probably hear it best in this version, where the tempo is closest. Compare 0:03 to 0:31 here... ... to 0:17 to 0:34 in this: Please tell me if you hear it as strongly as I do! I'm not sure if it's exactly the same chord progression, but it definitely has the same structure in how the melodic phrases are repeated and developed. Here are some of the slower versions from elsewhere in the film: The mood of that last one feels a bit closer to the version in Sonic Jam's Museum.
Coincidentally, I was playing this game called Wonderputt Forever through Netflix and then I heard one of the level themes and realized it also reminded me of the Sonic 3 data select / Sonic Jam menu themes. Unfortunately the only way to link to the soundtrack is to link to raw gameplay footage, but it's something, I guess. Maybe it's also on the version of the soundtrack that you can buy on Steam? It's pretty cheap right now.
Watching Transformers animated movie and noticed that this background music sounds similar to the Sonic CD end credits (at 49:17 mark)
Ok, sorry for filling the page with cutesy anime stuff, About the Advance games, there are a couple of songs that always reminded me of some magical girl anime. The first one is Music Plant: The composition is not the same, but I think it's incredibly reminiscent of this: Spoiler: Sounds alike It's the witch transformation theme from the second season of Ojamajo Doremi/Magical Doremi. Now, while it could be a coincidence, I think that there's a chance it might not be... the show was pretty popular world wide when Advance 2 was released, and Music Plant's song is specifically played in a zone themed after music... the place looks like a more modern version of the witch world from that anime, so maybe the reference was intentional? We will never know. The second one is a bit more obscure, the waiting theme in multiplayer mode: Again, the composition is different, but it has similar vibes, coincidence or not: Spoiler: Sounds alike A song called "Hoe?" from Card Captor Sakura's soundtrack. It's that song that is played every time something stupid happes. Not sure if the reference is intentional or not, I have no idea... the only thing I can say is that a few weeks ago I've heard this song (distorced with AI) as a background in a meme video of animals doing funny things (but this is unrelated).
I seriously should have made the following bunch of similarity posts way sooner, as I noticed these resemblances ranging from months ago to even years ago, but I got consistently distracted with other things. Very similar vibes between both of these tracks. I wonder if they share the same composer(s) / arranger(s)? 1:32 To 2:08 0:25 To 0:50
While the credits of who worked on Final Boss Track 1 [A.K.A. Big Arm(s) / Final Eggman.] from Sonic The Hedgehog 3 aren't confirmed, I wonder if Jun Senoue had a hand in its composition, because part of that track sounds very similar to part of Cut Scene : Introduction of Death Egg mk.II from Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode II. 0:14 To 0:35 0:23 To 0:35 Pure coincidence, conscious or subconscious inspiration, or is there possibly something more to this similarity? A Sonic Retro Wiki page currently speculates Masanori Hikichi as the composer of Sonic 3's track, could it be possible that he and Jun Senoue collaborated on this track's creation? This would be kinda funny to me if true, because Jun Senoue collaborated with Cash Cash on the Big Arm remix track for the 3DS version of Sonic Generations, and he later collaborated with Tee Lopes on Sonic Mania Adventures Special Remix - "Big Arms"! Although not a concrete piece of evidence towards his involvement with the original Sonic 3 rendition, I think it's still worth noting that he seems to like repeatedly working with this music track. This could, of course, simply be because it's a fucking badass piece of music and fun as hell to remix! Additionally, I find it rather interesting that both tracks deviate significantly from their similarities at the very similar time of circa 35 seconds, almost as if Jun Senoue used the Sonic 3 track as a template of sorts for some structure of the Sonic 4 track. Furthermore, both tracks' similarities begin with a slower portion and brief 'breather' moment with a single note held for roughly 2 to 3 seconds, followed by rapid percussion coming in during said single notes right before the distinctly similar and faster melodies kick off; even more melodic and structural similarities! Hmm... Lost Labyrinth Zone: Act 3 has distinct similarities in 2 sections to 2 different music tracks respectively. 0:00 to 0:12 sounds a lot like 0:45 to 0:52 of Route 15 from Pokémon X & Y. 0:13 to 0:25 sounds a lot like 1:04 to 1:19 of Baby Jane from Rod Stewart. Special thanks for this similarity spotting goes to my mum, who years ago happened to walk into my bedroom while I was listening to Lost Labyrinth Zone: Act 3, and she pointed out "That sounds like Baby Jane by Rod Stewart."
The similarities between Final Zone from Sonic 1 and Planet Earth from Duran Duran are pretty commonly known... ... However, what I hardly ever see anyone mention anywhere online is the striking similarity of another melody in Final Zone to that of a melody in Soviet Connection from Grand Theft Auto IV. 0:21 To 0:36 0:21 To 0:33 (And at various other points throughout the track.) I'm just now realising that these similarities both start coincidentally at 21 seconds in both of these videos, hah. Some strong bassline similarities going on here. Also applies to Sonic Advance 2's variants of that Zone Select track for XX Zone and True Area 53 Zone.
Crash Bandicoot and Sonic Unleashed contain strong soundalikes which I see as negative and positive emotion counterparts to each other. 0:06 To 0:12 & 0:19 To 0:33 1:00 To 1:22 0:25 To 0:50 0:06 To 0:17 A small portion of stock royalty-free music track Customer Service, from the now-closed company Digital Juice, called Sonic And The Fallen Star's theme / leitmotif years ago back in 2007. 1:32 To 1:33 & 1:37 To 1:38 These have some striking similarities in speed, melody and overall structure; they even both loop / finish a segment at a very similar position of 6 seconds. Intentionally or not, Richard Jacques remixed a portion of his Boss track from Sonic 3D Blast: Flickies' Island (Saturn) in a portion of his Robot Facility Track 2 for Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. 0:51 To 1:06 1:02 To 1:15 0:30 to 0:58, 1:58 to 2:25 and 3:25 to 3:53 sound like something straight out of Sonic CD's American soundtrack. These 2 tracks are so similar that I felt compelled to do a music mashup of 'em, downloadable here. From Start Onwards From 0:06 Onwards 2:36 to 3:06 gives me very strong Sonic Advance trilogy vibes. 0:59 to 1:13 in this track contains an example of the similarities, and there are similar sounds like this in various other tracks from the Sonic Advance games which are also like the section noted in the video above. This one is an instrumentation similarity rather than melodic stuff. The thick, bouncy synth in this track strongly reminds me of that kind of similar synth in Sonic Spinball... ... specifically its Boss track. This one is a sound effect similarity between a music track and cutscenes audio. 0:00 To 0:06 0:09 To 0:14 (And during other parts of the video in other Doom Power cutscenes.) Almost identical percussion and very similar starting sound effect style between these 2 tracks. 0:28 To 0:44 0:14 To 0:28
Wouldn't be surprised if it was already brought up before, given Ryuichi Sakamoto's influence on Sega's (and video games in general) music, but I always thought that Tong Poo by Yellow Magic Orchestra wouldn't sound out of place in place of the Aquatic Ruin Zone music.
1:45 To 1:49 1:42 To 1:46 Interestingly, the track that plays right before Broken Piece during gameplay is Rusted Apart, and both tracks play in a level titled Rust, containing a dilapidated environment not too dissimilar to the trope of Rusty Ruin Zone's levels, albeit with an ice and snow winter setting rather than a rain and fog / mist setting. Furthermore, while Rusted Apart is not melodically nor instrumentally similar to Rusty Ruin Zone's tracks, I strongly argue that it carries a quite similar emotional tone. Intentionally or not, Jun Senoue copied a similar melody and structure from a portion of his Mad Gear Zone: Act 1 track in Sonic 4: Episode I to a portion of his Sky Fortress Zone: Act 1 track for Sonic 4: Episode II. Both tracks also start and end their similarities with very close timing, plus the lengths of these sections are very similar. 0:00 To 0:12 0:00 To 0:13
