It might just be a touch up that followed in S&K/S3K, kinda like the difference between the Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 pallets.

Don't forget sonic 2 has the pink shaded knuckles but that might be for other limit reasons.

Maybe the slight pink tone was too girly so they made him more red, always possible.

Knuckles' red palette is already in the Sonic 3 data select screen though, so it must have been conceived before Sonic 3 was released. My guess would be that they just used the pink palette because that's the only way you saw him in the standalone game - though that doesn't really tie in with him suddenly having the right socks. Good spot!

In Sonic 1 (8-bit) if you start from a checkpoint monitor, no matter what time you died, after the level restarts the clock gets set to 1:30. Here's a video (Sorry it's shitty quality, Vegas was being stupid and I didn't feel like dealing with it :v:):

I should point out he's also pink with green socks in the Competition menu, so it's probably not that groundbreaking of a discovery.

So, like, I was hex editing Sonic 3 Complete (:ssh:) in order to force Knuckles to be pink with green socks at all times. Obviously this is going to cause problems what with the HUD going green for a bit, but much more surprising is Hidden Palace. I already knew it uses a "Knuckles" palette all around, used for the red teleporters, but to my surprise, even though he already has all the colors he needs, Knuckles forces his own palette when he comes into view. What's bugging me is that this palette, as far as I can tell anyway, is not stored explicitly in the ROM.

The palette he loads seems to be identical to the regular level palette, it's a "compromise" in order to allow rings to look right, but screwing up Knuckles' shoes in the process, making them olive where they should be bright red.

I was wondering if anybody with greater expertise and familiarity with this game could crack it open and see exactly what Knuckles does when he's first spawned. I realize that this is a bit too technical for this forum, but hey, it was the conversation in this topic that led to it, so.

It loads the data from $66912 into the second palette line, which is also done for a number of other Knuckles appearances - but immediately afterwards, the seventh entry is manually overwritten with $88, as it was in the level palette.

As you say, this is seemingly a compromise to allow rings to look acceptable, since this is the only time in the game where you should see AI Knuckles on screen at the same time as a ring.

Because of this manual correction, loading Knuckles' palette makes only one effective change, which is to change the last colour on the line from a dark gold to almost black. This is needed both to display Knuckles and some of the Super Emeralds. It does mean rings don't look exactly right, but it's quite hard to spot.

Interesting point on the competition menu. I always forget about competition mode! He also looks to be pretty pink in competition gameplay even, once again with green socks (in fact "HUD yellow" is replaced by green on both Sonic's and Knuckles' lines). Data Select seems to be very much the odd one out...

If it's Mike Pollock (Youtube isn't cooperating with me this second), then he remains alive and well as the current English Eggman voice.

Sorry. I thought the voice was Sir Long John Baldry's, not Mike Pollock's.

This might be old, but if it is, I know for sure some people missed it.

    Check this out:

    Sound familiar?

The music for Sonic Drift 2 was composed by Masayuki Nagao, and yes this name appears in the Sonic 3 credits. By the way, more evidence showed up that proves that Masayuki is a real person and NOT an alias for Hataya. That is all wrong.

So this might confirm another person with a song from Sonic 3.

Supposedly, and I'm not sure about this because I haven't checked, but I think someone said that the invincibility theme for Sonic Drift 2 was the Sonic 3 invincibility. I can't confirm this though.

EDIT: Oh wait, the Sonic 3 invincibility theme is in there as well.

Does anybody have a picture of this guy yet? All I ever really wanted was some sort of physical evidence tangibly proving that he is a different person from Hataya. Everything else seems to be unsourced and is largely circumstantial.

I could try to get that liner note in that one music album with the Sonic 3 Data Select screen remix that was done by Hataya translated to see if he actually mentions having anything to do with the game. But besides that, it's difficult to try and track down Japanese people.

In my opinion the amount of information that supports the notion that Nagao is a different person from Hataya is greater than the amount of information that says that they're the same person. While there can be information that makes them seem like different individuals, I can't think of anything logical that hints that they're the same person except for the fact that their own individual aliases sound similar to each other and that Nagao mysteriously vanished from Sonic Team. But remember that it happened to other composers as well, what the hell happened with Tokuhiku Uwabo? Ippo? Milpo? They all vanished at the same time as well (though in the case of Milpo, Jun Senoue said a few years back that he had just left Sega recently in an email interview to LOst, too bad we'll never know Milpo's full name - oh well).

But at least while the wikipedia page is largely unsourced, it's coming from mostly the same person (possibly hinting that the one entering the information is either related to Nagao or is the composer himself). Another thing is that apparently he hasn't left the game industry yet, as he's doing music for some recent game titles. Some of the information being put down is kinda specific as well, so the person putting it down would have to know Nagao pretty well to write it.

But an easier way to solve this whole issue to get Jun Senoue on the line again and ask him if Nagao was a different person. I'm sure he'd be able to remember that much. Or I could hunt down Hataya protos style and get his email and ask him myself.

    But again, Japanese people foideufhsoghseoghseg.

Anything you can do to conclusively solve this debate is fine by me. I just think a ton of things make sense when you connect the two people that don't otherwise, especially when it comes to extreme stylistic similarities between the way they compose. In the case of Hataya, his style of House is so blatant that you'd have to be deaf to not tell he made it. I always had the same feeling with tracks credited to Nagao, which I find pretty hard to ignore. The very specific reuse of You Can Do Anything also makes a lot more sense when you consider them one in the same. I digress, though.

Going back to the knuckles yellow socks thing, I was playing the megadrive DS collection again yesterday and noticed for the sonic 3 shot they show knuckles in yellow and pink, then I realised all this time that knuckles at the beginner when he steals the emeralds is using the older colour palette.

amazing how I never notice anything so obvious and I've played sonic 3 a billion times now, same happens in the s3&k intro.

Here's some evidence for the sound staff. First is Milpo's true identity.

    From: http://segaretro.org/Talk:Milpo
    Why Milpo is Yoshiaki Kashima

The worklist from the archived site found at the bottom of Milpo's Sega Retro page <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20030610170648/bn.sakura.ne.jp/~milpo/works.html" target="_blank">http://web.archive.org/web/20030610170648/...ilpo/works.html</a> includes one key game: Seima Densetsu3X3Eyes
    http://www.mobygames.com/game/3x3-eyes-seima-densetsu

    Music (??) Kaoru Wada (?? ?), Yukifumi Makino (????), Yoshiaki Kashima (????)

Milpo was also nice enough to include the CD soundtrack (KICA1123/1124)
    http://vgmdb.net/album/1558

The OST credits the three as follows on Booklet pg. 3:

    ??.??:?? ?,???,MACKY
[Compose & Arrange: Kaoru Wada, Mirubo, MACKY], which becomes

[Compose & Arrange: Kaoru Wada, Mirubo, Yukifumi Makino]

    Therefore, Milpo/Mirubo = Yoshiaki Kashima

Next is Masayuki Nagao being different from Naofumi Hataya

    From: http://segaretro.org/Talk:Naofumi_Hataya
Why Naofumi Hataya is not the same person as Masayuki Nagao

-Masayuki Nagao originally worked for Santos alongside Hirofumi Murasaki and Morihiko Akiyama.
-In December 1991, Santos became a wholly-owned subsidary of Sega and was renamed Megasoft. http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index.php/Wh...Santos/Megasoft
-Naofumi Hataya joined Sega in 1990 http://sega.jp/segavoice/vol08/
-Shinobi III, one of the games credited to Nagao, was developed by Megasoft http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.ph...6649&page=3

-After leaving Sega, Nagao continued to work on other games such as Bubble Bobble Evolution [under "Direction"] http://www.allgame.com/game.php?id=50672&tab=credits and Rainbow Islands Evolution [under "Story" and "Music"] http://www.allgame.com/game.php?id=62953&tab=credits

-He has also played keyboard at a birthday concert for the singer Saeri on December 8, 2007 http://jazz-musician.jp/yamaguchi/schedule/sch200712.html http://meme.cclub.cc/info-2007.htm [search for ????] and is credited in hiragana in Utautau three times.
