Ohshima has been very active on social networks lately, explaining some Sonic facts.

The last one ha has shared I think it's not known (sorry if I'm wrong).

He has said that Taku Makino made the very first 3D model of Sonic, posting this pic:



And that this model was the reference used for the Sonic seen in Sonic CD's title screen:

Good to put a name to it - that model has popped up quite a bit over the years.

Don't read too much into that Sonic CD title screen though - that Sonic model was used as a "reference" for everything in the first game, which includes the in-game sprites and cover artwork. In fact, they made a point of specifically modelling Sonic in 3D so they could get the animations right.

 

Look at the perspective on his ears. Most sprites/illustrations at the time stylized the ears by having one face directly forward and the other one directly backward. This one is a perfect match.

 

There's a new interview with Yuji Naka.

The only thing of note to me is the relationship between Yu Suzuki and Yuji Naka - he talks of competing to see who spends the most time at the office, and confirms that the reason his alias is "YU2" is because of Yu Suzuki being "YU", partly as a sign of respect.

They also had a falling out, with Naka suggesting that Suzuki should work on arcade games (while he was busy with Shenmue).

 

Yeah, it looks like they took a pic (or render?) of it and then cleaned it up and made his pupils thicker for some reason.

I wonder why they didn't use the same model for Sonic 2, seeing how this one's spines look so much better...

 

Personally I always hated Sonic CD's title screen. I'm glad they made some modifications for that design.

 

"Don't read too much into that" being, "it's not a big deal" as opposed to "it didn't happen".

Though the work that it inspired ended up being more influencial.

 

But it is a big deal in the case of the SCD title. It's nearly a 1:1 copy. Are you blind, or are you just covering your ears?

I don't recall reading that it influenced the 2D illustrations at all -- rather, they say the sculptures were a reference to how Sonic looks in 3D, so they could get the various angles in the game sprites right.

 

I assure you, I am neither.

Though there isn't anything to "read" on that last point - it's the same pose - it strikes me as unlikely two people at Sega are going to come up with the same look independently like that.

 

So, I've found a EU Sonic 1 copy which says "Made in Malaysia" on the back of the box. Does that mean that it is a REV 01 copy? I know a REV 01 copy of Sonic 1 is supposed to say "Made in Japan" on the back of the cartridge, but I don't know what it's supposed to say on the back of the box.
The only thing that I'm aware of is hat when copies say "Made in China" on the back of the box, they are always a REV 00 copy, as I own one myself.

 

My EU Rev01 says 'made in Japan' on both.

Huh, now I've found one which states 'Made in Japan' on the back of the box, but it says 'Made in Malaysia' on the back of the cartridge.
