As in the spaces they are traveling in for the whole game, yes.

If Modern knowingly telling Classic to enjoy his future and that it's going to be great isn't indicative of what the intention was with the setup of Generations, I don't know what is.

A huge mess, in my honest opinion.
All of Generations was that, to me...

Sonic telling his past self his future is gonna be great is the biggest proof that Pontac and Graff weren’t familiar with the franchise

Not in Japanese, they just say they're travelling through Time.

The entire concept of Generations was old meets new, from the name to the gameplay to what little plot there is. The Modern character meets his old incarnation. The story explicitly depicts the characters and their younger selves teaming up and and Eggman correcting his past mistakes no matter what language you’re playing in. There are floating clocks everywhere and the bad guy is called Time Eater. Why is there any debate or surprise that there is time travel involved?

Some fans want to pretend Forces wasn't a retcon, I guess

something like, is mania canon to frontiers? ignoring forces since it was released before the switch to a unified timeline, there isn't really anything implying so, outside of the drop dash, a gameplay mechanic

the classic and modern sonic brands having a unified timeline is odd given that one brand would therefore be focused on not-very-distant prequels, but even then those prequels aren't even connected to the modern games at all in any way shape or form so it's just all sorts of funky

Not everything has to be reference everything else. Sonic Unleashed, for example, is pretty much standalone but there’s no question that it still happens in the same continuity as the rest. Hell, the only main classic games that directly connect are 2&3, that doesn’t mean 1 and CD didn’t happen.

I guess wasn’t clear enough. I was just using the classics as examples. Back when Sonic & Knuckles came out, it only referenced Sonic 2, but people weren’t declaring 1 and CD somehow not canon because they weren’t “connected” the right way.

I mean it referenced Sonic 1 too with Mecha Sonic using the GHZ boss but that’s neither here nor there. :v

I feel like discussion around canonicity has been corroded by people clinging to their headcanons way too hard, to the point that even the most logical and intuitive ideas and assumptions are in question unless the piece media concerned grabs us by the shoulders and shouts “THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING” into our faces while shaking us vigorously instead of letting us make reasonable inferences about a series that isn’t so complex to begin with.

If you're going that route, Tails Tube retconned the retcon and we're back on how we were in Generations.

I think kazz's point was that the other guy was acting like the "Classic Sonic is from another dimension" lore predated Forces, not that people should go by Forces' retcon.

Am I right to assume that "the other guy" is I? Not an issue, just wanted to make sure of it...
I might've tried to find a way to dwarf Generations' take on "Classic Sonic being past Modern Sonic", but even so Forces later went the "parallel realities" way, so... ^^"

Yeah. I didn't say your name because I thought it would sound kind of accusatory?

Well, not saying it made it feel like I wasn't worth mentioning, that's all... ^^"
