For those not following the gamefaqs thread, super transformation is simply activated by the X and/or Y buttons.

Pretty out of the way if you ask me, unless you have fat fingers.

I think it would be better if the Y button was used for super transformation. X, A and B would serve as the buttons for jumping, spindashing and the homing attack. Just imagine those three button as the Mega Drive's A, B and C buttons.

On my butt in front of the computer. Where else?
I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
Yes, our precious one-button gameplay becomes two-button gameplay if you collect all of the Chaos Emeralds. Alas for the price of actually being able to ignore the transformation until you actually want to use it. *sigh*

    Relax, I'm kidding.

I figured that'd be it. I really wish they could have done something like that back in the days of the Insta-Shield, though.

That would be most unlike the classics, which all functioned on one button. However, moving Super Mode away from those is good, as it's actually an improvement. Now you really can't have anyone complaining about going super because it won't be forced upon them.

    EDIT: Ninja'd by Solaris

Fuck yes! That means I'll be able to play the levels Sans-Super Sonic even after I collect the emeralds. I always disliked super sonic - he felt game breaking IMO. I enjoy the challenge.

I love Super Sonic, but I hate always having to use him once I have him, because sometimes I just... don't... feel like it... :argh:

Strange. I thought everyone enjoyed that reward.

The reward is great fun, and it also means you're entitled to the good ending. But I don't think I've played through DEZ without turning super in years. It's nice to make it a choice.

Well, I've played Death Egg Zone without transforming, but it's a pain in the ass not to be able to Insta-Shield the enemies there. Especially those four-point fuckers.

Yeah, I've always preferred to just play as normal Sonic. Playing as Super Sonic is cool beans and all but I don't like being forced to becoming him after just jumping. :X

As awesome as the alternative button to become super is, I still prefer Tiddle's Sonic 3 Complete method: You double tap the button to become super and double tap it again to turn it off. That's the best use of a transformation button input I've seen yet.

Aaaaaah, I think being able to turn Super Mode off at will would be too abusive...

Agreed. That way, you could practically guarantee your ring supply never depletes cause you'd just turn it on whenever there's an enemy.

Me too. At any rate, I don't know if anyone noticed my extended absence, but I need some time to cool off.

So anyone know why the official Sonic 4 site is gone?

Mostly everyone does, but there's always a few that don't.

In any case, everyone can agree that making it optional is a good way to go, since the naysayers lack the restraint to not get the god damn last emerald until the final level

Also, site is down due to a power outage.

EDIT: Anywho, about time the developers caught on to let the PLAYER make the decision of using Super mode.

  15. Definitely. This is one legitimate, step forward that Sonic 4 has that no one can deny.

Well that's kind of hard, isn't it? In S3&K, you can't enter the Special Stage after Lava Reef anyway, and in Sonic 2, the last special stage is a bitch and you probably want to give yourself a zone or two's worth of room for error...

But yeah, if you're confident enough, you can usually put off getting the Emerald until the last possible moment. I'm good enough at Sonic 2's Special Stages that I can willingly wait until the very last checkpoint in the game to get it if I want, but even if I wait until the last Giant Ring I know of in Lava Reef Act 2, that still leaves all of Sky Sanctuary and Death Egg Zone... less of a pain as Knuckles since Lava Reef's his last Zone, but...

But I suppose that's beside the point. Yeah, they put Super Sonic on a separate button this time, which is a definitive plus and pretty much the only way to give everyone what they want in this case.

As has been explained several times, there was a power outage at SoA recently. It's the cause of that problem. The other regions' websites are still up, and you can access the US one here.

I still can't believe the Release Date hasn't been announced yet. I'm sitting here looking at the three pictures provided via Xbox Live on my Television, and it looks pretty damn good. I'd love to know when I can expect this. =P

I think the release date was in one of the ??? images. The same ones that revealed the last platform.

Edit: Nevermind, it just says July 2010.
