  1. Just to end my part of the debate, If Steam and the PC version are so far away from reality then why is SEGA shoving up easily emulatable Megadrive games up there? Because they think they'll sell.

  2. I honestly don't know.
Then again, they aren't so much of a risk as compared with an entirely new game.
Maybe they are planning for a PC release if the Mega Drive games sell well on Steam.

No, those were just different takes based on the same design that could be seen in the official artwork, not a redesign.

Super Sonic has green eyes in Sonic 3, Sonic doesn't.

He does the spinning legs thing in here. And it didn't look bad in the Special Stages of Sonic CD and Chaotix, anyway.

I always considered SA1's warped artstyle to be just a graffiti-like take on Sonic until they decided to stick with that design from then on. :colbert:

But I'm not gonna get in this argument; just wanted to put that out. Besides, I like Unleashed Sonic and I don't have a problem with him.

  5. I really don't think this whole piracy / no PC sales thing is really as large an issue as it is. Seriously, SEGA sold All Star Racing via Steam, and is running a sale of all the games they sell on there right now!

I can't really see any reason why they shouldn't do it. Maybe they're afraid of royalties? Agreements with Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo/Apple? I bet Sonic 4 is extremely easy to port to boot. What do they have to lose exactly?

Since it's on the 360, it's easier to port to PC than it is to any of the other systems they have already ported it to. I just think they're waiting for all episodes to be released before they release it for PC.

Speak for yourself, YOU know (read: think) SEGA won't make a PC version.

Well I guess I'll give my two cents/pence/ningi/etc on the subject:
Yes SEGA are saying that there's been an "overwhelmingly positive response", but of course they're going to say that, no ones going to say "I'll be honest with you guys, we're shifting the game back because everyone says it sucks." You don't have to be a P.R. guru to know that much. In my opinion, I think this delay is the best news we've heard so far, it means that they're actually taking their time, making sure everything's perfect and avoiding the same situations that have happened with the games... well since Sonic 2.
And I'll actually be pissed off if they do put classic Sonic in, sure you can argue about classic authenticity till the cows come home, but fuck, I'd rather they made the made the game good instead of pleasing the BAWW GREEN EYES crowd. And anyway, with every screen they give us they seem to be tweaking the Sonic model, so I expect something that is a good blend of the two.

And I don't think the delay untill the Primary Gifting Period (Bill Bailey lulz) is for economic reasons. For one, it's Sonic 4, it's going to sell like hot cakes whenever it comes out, and two, it's DLC, and I have the feeling that the primary audience for purchasing downloadable content is people who own their own credit cards, I.E. adults, who're just going to buy the thing instead of asking Mum for it for Christmas.

    [/minor rant] :v:

But yeah, all in all, it sounds like they're giving a fuck. This can only be good thing.

If they did make a PC port, I wonder how they'd go about it? Would they use the "Games for Windows" branding and DRM? Steam? Or just a generic port? Steam would be ideal since that would open up the possibility of Mac and Linux ports.

Maybe they just haven't made a PC port because they know that within a fortnight of its release everyone here will have completely picked it apart and created a "Better Version".

Or maybe they did, just keep it a secret until they get more eps done. owo

...which is heaps unlikely for SEGA ?.

It's enibitable that at some point in time sonic 4 will be on the pc, look how much they milk the older games, the question is "when?"

Would be nice to have it on the pc if you can scale it and pick a resolution but look at what sega said with the pc version of all stars racing, saying that they know a lot of pirates will just download it.

To be fair, next to no effort goes into those - once you have a working emulator wrapper, you can package a ROM into it and sell it to your heart's content. No development needed beyond the initial emulator coding (which has largely been done anyway for titles such as SMC or SMC+), and the occasional compile with a new source ROM.

EDIT: Damn, it should be "No way, I can't believe this!" Well I guess drinking before going on the internet destroys some of your nerd credibility...

After a few days away, I've got around to start catching up on this stuff since the delay news. I see some people complaining about the fact that the game is delayed and saying there's no chance Sega is delaying it to fix problems with the game. I...what. What possible other reason could there be to delay it for presumably four to six months? Just for kicks?

Also, one particular post that caught my eye:

So, Sega still has Yuji Naka's time travelling Ferrari, then? Why would that trailer be indicative of changes that they haven't made yet? Given that the delay time hasn't even been reached yet, they still haven't really been able to make use of this new time.

...Wow. I wasn't actually being serious with the "just for kicks" bit. Also, I typed it up before getting to this post.

Does a delay mean the game will instantly be amazing? No, not necessarily. It could still end up being absolutely terrible even with a delay. But to think they'd delay it for months and not even attempt to fix anything? Sorry, but I can't understand why people would honestly think that.

One other thing. A few people said that it seems to be silly that Sega would say that there's overwhelming positive response to the game despite numerous people having complaints being a likely reason for delaying it. When I first saw that bit that they said, before seeing people saying this, I thought it was pretty clear that they meant: "To people casually keeping up on the game, there's huge positive response. But a bunch of people who saw the leaks have complaints about the gameplay. To those guys, don't worry; We know about the problems here, and we're going to at least try to fix them. Also, saying this the way we did gives us good PR."

Finally, someone said it! I don't think there were any differences in the trailer. Someone claimed Sonic continuing to roll after bopping badniks was new compared to the previous footage, but that was obviously untrue.

While I'm on the topic of rolling, though: I think they should revert the new behaviour of Sonic dropping out of a roll when launching from a ramp (emphasised in case anyone with influence reads this ;)), and perhaps the converse behaviour of always spinning out of a booster. Both are in contrast to the previous games. I think whether Sonic is spinning or not should usually be up to the player. If they don't spin after a booster and run into a badnik, too bad. Similarly, if they're spinning off a ramp, they shouldn't be reverted and thus left vulnerable. Does anyone else have an opinion on this? (Also, no more dust trails. :v:)

    A secret. >:3
Regarding the news about the delay... I wasn't here for much of the wankfest that took place for some 20 pages, I wasn't around for the overkill on the hype meter about an announcement, I wasn't here for the bitch-fit about other people's opinions on other people's opinions on blogs or whatever, and I heard about the news a couple days ago from another source, and I was so hyped about it. I mean, I was so fucking crazy about it it wasn't even funny. Because I remember Sonic '06, I remember the Sonic 2 beta, I remember Sonic 16 not being made because of time/budget/system restrictions, and I don't want that to happen again, and it showed me "Hey, they might, they MIGHT actually give a shit!" and it restored whatever bit of hope I had for the game. It makes me think we might just get an option to play as classic Sonic (though I hope that option and the one to turn off homing are separate options because if Tails is ever available I don't want to have to turn off his flying ability just to play as the cute Tails. Classic shouldn't mean harder / more limited by damn!) and that maybe they might add some feature to the game that will make it more fun, maybe the level design will turn out to be less linear like in S3 though I can't say that because I don't know how linear it really is, and maybe they will listen to the fans and continue to for future projects.

I guess that makes me a #3 (going by the list a few pages back) but I'm a pessimist, and I'm inclined to believe 2. Not because I want to, but because when I first played Sonic 3 I was already dreaming of a real 3D Sonic, and when I finally got my hands on the first 3D Sonic I'd ever played... It was Sonic Adventure 2. Biggest letdown of my fantard life. This delay gives me hope though, and I think that, had I been here last week for the hypefest, I would be sitting here bitching about how let down I was because hearing SEGA make an announcement of a game would raise speculation in my head that maybe they would add Tails to Ep. 1 or maybe they would do some awesome thing to the game, but since SEGA never sowed the speculation seeds in my fertile mind, I never supplied the produce required to fuel a 20 page bitchfit, so in short, I really do think it was all the hype and not just because it's a shitty announcement. It's not, and I know that's been said before, but I'm trying to say that from the point of view of someone who abstained from the hype and heard the news in the most matter-of-fact way possible hoping that my input on the subject is valuable, but at the same time, I'm also going on record saying that had I been a part of the hype machine, I would be as bitchy, irrational and childish as everyone else about it most likely, so I'm no better than anyone else just because I wasn't here to fuel the fire. :)

As for what I think they'll do about their current problems... Probably jack shit, probably something awesome. Probably jack shit sprayed over with Fabreeze and doused in Oxy Clean, but even that would be better than just shit. If they added a classic skin mode and took out some speed boosters and (don't kill me) changed his name to Robotnik for the American division but left in the minecart, I would actually be just as happy as if they took out the mincart and put in an extra zone and worked on making the level design totally awesome but left in 'modern' Sonic, because at this point, I realize as much as I love the old art direction, I'm never going to get the best of both worlds because (for some reason) the world just doesn't work like that and I might as well try to be an optimist about a Sonic game for the first time in 10 years.

Someone FINALLY agrees with me wholeheartedly on the fact that Tails and Knuckles are missing from Sonic 4 and understands exactly how I feel about how Sonic 4 should be a takeoff from Sonic 3. FINALLY somebody understands how sequels are supposed to work.
